2026 Ultima Handicap

Still looks a Lovely racing weight doesn't it

Sounds very much like Jagwar going Ultima as well which is surprising
Jagwar has to run over 3 miles otherwise he cannot run in the Grand National.

Would be quite the stat buster if he wins this.

Is it a bit unusual for jp to run three of his British trained runners all in one handicap with three different jockeys? Given that all three will be at the top of the betting?

Maybe not, but struck me as a bit unusual and thought one might go elsewhere. Jagwar apparently needs to run here to qualify for the national, if that's where they want to go, other wise he could go for the plate. Trainer wasn't exactly 100% certain iroko was uktima bound the other day either when it was announced he'd be going to Cheltenham. Ryanair supplement possibly? Or maybe johnnywho just skips the festival.

With Iroko all but confirmed to come here it means that despite a 15lb hike in the ratings, Myretown is only running with 10lb more on his back for his racing weight.

Obviously still question marks after his run LTO, which I don't think they should have gone for, but here we are.
The National was always the plan I think and they were panicked into getting him a rating that got him in, when that failed they looked here, I think that’s enough of a flag to put me off, can’t be many horses that have won a festival race when a month before racing their eyes were set elsewhere….

I remember when they said the National was the plan for Corach Rambler, albeit he was already on the cusp of getting in the race, so they didn't need that extra run, but he duly obliged in the Ultima before winning the National.

I, personally, don't know what they saw in Myretown to think he was a national horse. He's extremely free going, always has been. Smokescreen for this race perhaps?

I don’t disagree, but I’d have good money on Myretown not running next week had he won the Hennessy and was already a 150 horse.
Either that or they have a free hit at the Gold Cup like Venetia did with Mon Mome…

Mon Mome won the National before he ever ran in a Gold Cup though.

For me, Myretown was never going down the National route, but I said as much early on when I mentioned Myretown, again, for the Ultima.

OK I believed it was the same season, remember he ran a cracker in the Gold Cup at a price.
Unless the Ultima is a poor renewal I’m sure a young unexposed type will prove too good off a low mark…

I think they may have ran here had they already got a mark high enough for the national earlier in the season.
And he’s got a good chance I reckon
But it wasn’t a smokescreen and the national was on their mind for sure
The run at haydock and comments confirmed it.
Be a daft smokescreen really if you think about it. If this was the real plan !!

Anyone thinking this was all a plot to get back here is giving them far too much credit imo. Always wanted to run in the National, but could never qualify. Now ended up here, and not without a chance.

You forgot one….Montregard.

I’m hoping comes here after his win last time out, be touch and go whether he gets in or not right enough.

He's just been badly campaigned hasn't he. Or not as good as they thought he was. Doesn't mean he's not back here on a workable mark but I'm not having this by design. Win or lose.

I think they had Gold Cup ambitions, and if he had won the Coral Gold Cup I think they would have persisted down that route, I think @Istabraq mentioned the Gold Cup earlier.

I do not believe they really had any intentions of going down the Grand National route, this is my own belief, obviously I can also understand why most would not feel the same way, but for me he has never looked like a Grand National horse, you couldn't switch him off like Corach Rambler, he's more in the mould of Ahoy Senor, the trainer would know this.

Handstands will run here says Ben Pauling

If he was mind id have stuck him in the ryanair
Perhaps he's been given the heads up that one of F2F or Gaelic runs in the Ryanair
