2026 Ryanair Chase

Patrick Mullins seems absolutely hellbent on riding Gaelic Warrior in the Gold Cup. The recent PP podcast is worth a listen.
How much influence would Patrick actually have over that decision.. I’d imagine there’s plenty of politics involved..

He has seemed to get on really well with him. Deserves his chance.

I don't think who rides Gaelic is particularly relevant to the decision. Willie is never running both in a penalty kick Ryanair is he. Especially with a wide open GC.

Unlikely you'd think but could happen. He's got loads in the GC hasn't he ??

I can't listen to Patrick, tells you everything without saying anything, I genuinely couldn't believe a single word that comes from his mouth, its always so self interest driven with touches of making sure any listening owners don't suddenly have questions to ask.

Believe me, you're not alone in that view.

That said, I do think Willie will put him up on GW in the GC.

I can listen to Willie, I enjoy hearing from Willie, sure you know you're not getting the full picture but I don't think we really expect to from any of them, but at least he is interesting to listen to, occasionally he says something from left field you wasn't expecting, mostly it never comes to much but it gives you pause for thought, Patrick has none of that, its all over rehearsed and delivered with the charm of walking into a unflushed toilet cubicle.

Lots of words come out of willies mouth but he makes sure hes not actually saying anything

People deserve things they have earnt not that they have inherited or been gifted. There are hundreds of jockeys that deserve it more and hundreds of jockeys would have done really well with him given the chance. If there’s a person in racing that has benefitted more off the back of another’s talent and genius I’d like to know. Does Thady deserve to take over the license from his dad of course he doesn’t. These are dynasties not meritocracies. Willie is a king not a Prime Minister or President or CEO and you will see exactly the impact of that when Willie finally retires.

All that said I agree he gets on okay with the horse and I agree he’s probably the logical choice as the train has left the station for other jockeys now. That said I’m sure there are jockeys out there with great hands that could really suit this fella but they are not going to get a sniff obviously. Deserves… give me a break :coffee:

I forecast, if we're not already seeing it already, that passing the baton onto the next generation, doesn't actually mean a continuation of former glories.

As for Gaelic Warrior, I wonder if PT now would prefer to ride him rather than what looks to be a regressing Galopin?

I think also the loss of Michael O'Sullivan RIP, so tragically last year, had an impact on the hierarchy in the yard. He was getting increasingly more rides for Mullins, with whom he'd been with for a number of years as he progressed through the claiming ranks.

I only object to the king vs president comparison. ;)

Thandy really hasnt the slighest, I know the pre trainers for the Gosden yard, when he went to visit he said the same phrase for the first 3 horses they showed him, it was incorrect & out of context all 3 times as well, they ushered him away from the horses after that, he really is "the big eared lad who the farmer keeps hidden from guests" level stupid.
If nepotism had a face, it'd be his & Patricks both fighting to be placed first.

One person who misses out more than most is Danny Mullins who surely does not get what he deserves in this stable.
