Nice time to open a thread about this season’s GN. A few posters have highlighted the likes of Vanillier and Mr Incredible, but my early dart is;

Panda Boy @ 66-1 365

I’d like to know if it’s on the agenda but ran well in the Irish equivalent earlier this year as well as coming 3rd the valuable PP Chase last December. He’s already been seen a couple of times this season running against decent opposition over shorter than ideal distances. Will be in that nice 8yo age group next April, 66-1 is a bit of a stand-out with 365.

Smaller fields to try and manoeuvre with handicap marks over coming months.

…..read that Panda Boy will be targeted at the National, so that’s a plus for my early shout. Best price 40-1 now.

….now it’s guess what number gets in with the reduced field. The handicapper suggests 144 (no 58).

Galvin got to be reasonably well treated there hasn't he. Didn't get very far last year mind. Was 50s earlier but chopped into 25s now.

Mr Incredible got a bit further last year and is another worth another chance. Mullins seems quite positive about how he's working and I assume he's deliberately been kept back?! Still 40s.

Well worth familiarising with the new eligibility criteria for this years race as several notable entries have still not met it yet.
Not sure exactly what they mean by current season though - and potentially having ran in the previous years National might count, which seems a little perverse but who fucking knows ?

Total prize fund £1,000,000.

£500,000 to the winning horse.

The second to receive £200,000, the third £100,000, the fourth £65,000, the fifth £40,000, the sixth £30,000, the seventh £20,000, the eighth £15,000, the ninth £10,000 and the 10[SUP]th[/SUP] £5,000.

For seven year olds and upwards which, prior to March 26[SUP]th[/SUP] 2024, have started in a minimum of six steeple chases run under the Rules of Racing of a Recognised Turf Authority, at least one of which must have been during the current season.

In addition, prior to March 26[SUP]th[/SUP] 2024, horses must have been placed first, second, third or fourth in a steeple chase with an official distance description of 'two miles, seven and a half furlongs' or more, at any time during the horse's career.

Horses must be also allotted a rating of 130 or more by the BHA Handicapper following a review of the horses entered and after taking account of races run up to and including February 18[SUP]th[/SUP]. Horses which are not qualified for a rating in Great Britain or Ireland at closing may also be entered. Such horses may be eligible for a weight, providing

the Handicapper is satisfied that the horse's racecourse performances up to and including February 18[SUP]th[/SUP] 2024 would merit a minimum rating of 130.

…..interesting but without looking, I can’t think there’ll be many that haven’t run in a chase this season (Le Milos an obvious one).

Corach Rambler into 7/1 after his Gold Cup performance.

But the real question is how far does Delta win by

…I started this thread with Panda Boy @ 66-1 but it’s unlikely he gets in. My main focus now is on Galvin and CAPADANNO, who I think could be the one.

Adamantly chosen looks to have a great chance in this race now.
33-1 decent value nrnb
66-1 antepost even better

….Fred sleeping on that 66-1, I wonder if Mullins still has an eye on the UK trainers title.

The 4 I fancy and backed accordingly are:

Noble Yeats 16/1 E/W - Been campaigned solely over hurdles this season, which I don't mind at all, and has been running solidly enough in some top races. His big day will clearly be the National now. 1lb lower than last season when never nearer, only going down by 8 1/2 lengths. 14lbs swing with Corach Rambler for this years race too. I'd much rather have Noble Yeats @ 16/1 than Corach at 6's, given how hard a race Corach is going into the National off the back of.

Kitty's Light 25/1 E/W (now 20's) - Absolutely loves marathon trips. His record over trips from 3m4f+ reads 2-2-3-1-1-1, the first of those 2's was when he was only 5 years old, so a ridiculously solid performance for a horse so young. His performances over 4m reads 2-1-1 and again, the 2 was when he was just aged 6. He's very experienced for his age with 35 career starts and 25 of them over fences. He's been campaigned a mixture this season, over hurdles and fences, and I don't mind a prep run in the Ultima prior to the National, something that has been done successfully in the past.

Galvin 20/1 E/W - 11lbs lower than when running in the race last season, albeit he unseated at the 1st. Not unknown to the forum, having won the NH Chase at the festival back in 2021. Clearly goes well over extreme trips and I really liked his prep run in the Boyne Hurdle at Navan, although I do realise the prep run was actually for the X-Country at the festival, which never got ran, rather than the Grand National. I'm surprised he's been dropped so much so quickly, and think the yard have targeted this race with him this season.

Stattler 40/1 E/W - Same owner as Galvin, and one, again, that doesnt' mind a marathon trip, having also won the NH Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, back in 2022. The horse who finished miles behind him in 3rd that day was last seasons 2nd in the Grand National, Vanillier. He's got to give him 8lbs in the National this season, but that shouldn't be an issue. Vanillier is 2nd favourite, around 12/1 and Stattler is 40's. I know which one I prefer. His dams sire is one of my all time favourite sires for Grand National horses, in Old Vic, sire of Grand National winners Don't Push It, and my namesake, Comply Or Die. He's also had multiple horses that have placed in the race over the years.

I've backed 6 so far and rank them in the following order as to their chances.

Panda Boy 2ptew 16-1 B365 & 27-1 Bex

Meetingofthewaters 4ptew 15-1 WH

Adamantly Chosen 1ptew 66-1 Betvic

Galvin 2ptew 22-1 WH

Mr Incredible 1ptew 25-1 B365

Chemical Energy 1ptew 25-1 B365

I have Kitty's Light on my to do list also but have held off for now on a class thing - and I'll no doubt add more...

Also done the related double on Meeting and Panda with The Goffer in the Topham (no idea if he runs in the race but would like his chances if he did and he looks a non stayer for the big one)

I don't think you need to stay as much as you think but you certainly need stamina after the last.

Big worry would be Corach but I might just cover him for my stakes nearer the time.
