2023 Novice Chasers

AL, I love that you bring an alternative view on form - but you have to work on your tone and not taking things so personally. A few times you've gone off the deep end, and there's really no need

sorry but my tone was exactly how being told to move on and stop talking about something deserved, and if this is not to your liking i'm sorry but it was aimed solely at the one person who felt it ok to dictate to me.

Jonbon ran in a couple of hurdle races like the one in the Kingmaker, i.e. not very competitive and having to make his own running and winning in an OK fashion. Back then he was winning and still getting hounded for not winning well.

He went and finished 2nd to Constitution Hill at the festival. He then finished ahead of El Fabiolo at Aintree, both could have varying degrees of excuses, but they are the facts we have. They have met once and it's 1-0 to Jonbon, at this present time I'd not be interested in excuses for either horse from that meet over hurdles.

It would be foolish to say either had not improved since then, of course.

Warwick is a flat track, and probably not ideal for Jonbon, even more so without a target to aim at.

El Fabiolo won very well, but had a target to aim for (DD).

The races were chalk and cheese IMO. One was set up for a horse to look impressive, the other, not.

I think the Arkle will suit both if DD goes off like the clappers, however you'd be hoping that neither jockey would be worried about the other and that they don't give DD too much rope otherwise they could find themselves with too much to do.

I think I'd be siding with Jonbon of the pair, for now, however, it wouldn't be a strong opinion, and I have both, plus DD backed, so I couldn't really care less. DD is the one I hope they forget about, but I can't see that happening, tbh.

So, Banbridge at 25's isn't too bad then??.......:excitement:

Is it ?
I’ve got out of breath plenty on times walking up hill from the parade ring to the stands.
I think it’s quite a stiff finish…

From ATR:

"Left handed, and flat with the exception of a fairly steep climb soon after the winning line" - which is how I've always seen the course. Definitely more emphasis on speed, not quite Kempton, but closer to what Kempton is than what Cheltenham is, IMO.

Mick Fitzgerald says: "Warwick is very much a speed track and, largely due to that reason, I rate it one of the toughest in Britain for a novice."

So just my fitness levels then...

It would appear so, sorry :highly_amused:

Tbf, the steep climb after the winning line is probably something to take out of it, so yeah there is a steep climb during the race but not when it matters, at the finish, it's after that, but I'd still say the majority of the course the emphasis is on speed.

I've been trying to make a case for Banbridge all season but he's not a horse I can warm to for an Arkle (which I assume is where your 25/1 comes from ?).
He relished the hill last year over 2m 4f on the New Course, powered away, if he were to have the speed to win an Arkle he would have to be be some horse, I mean a Desert Orchid type we haven't seen for generations...

The steep climb is way after the finishing line round the bend where's there's quite a decent hill

But the rest of the track where all the jumping happens is flat

Have you not watched his Arkle trial win then ? Agree he's not quite up to Dessie standard yet..:glee:

EW would be the call at 25's.

Remember it well, but it wasn't a great race.
These G2 small field early season trials flatter to deceive IMO, for me what was more telling of his ability was how he powered away in the M Pipe, hence my thinking that if he has the speed to come back to 2m and win an Arkle on the Old Course then he will be a horse for the ages....

Think he'll need the ground to be soft on the opening day to run in the Arkle. Possible though. The race will cut right up as well.

interesting.... jonbon 158 rpr calico 148.
calico southwell rpr adjusted to 143....

Big Dan will hope you’ve not got a line into the BHA if his lad goes up 13lbs. You’ll be pleasantly surprised tomorrow then I reckon.

I've said it in an earlier post 142 or lower i'm going all in

161 for jonbon and 149 for calico.

This was one of the key focus areas for the handicapping team at BHA HQ.
Trainers were complaining when their inferior horses went into graded races they became poorly handicapped because the superior horse didn’t come out of second gear and their horses were unfortunate enough to finish within 10l, if they put Calico up to 149 then they’ve made a mockery of the system and can expect graded races of 2 or 3 runner affairs for good, and who knows maybe the odd walkover.
I’ll be keeping an eye out for this one tomorrow…
