2023 Mares Novice Hurdle

She wasn't hidden away in the Royal bond

She travelled into it beautifully and looked the winner before finding very little for pressure

That would worry me for the Cheltenham hill

I don’t quite get it to be honest, someone can pipe in on what I say below.

What is the point in ‘hiding’ her in Grade 1’s with no attempt to win, then go and win a race where you’ll get a penalty in the intended race anyway, makes absolutely no sense to me whatever!

Why not just run on merit in mares races where you’re not going to have any more a penalty whether you win 1, 2 or 3 races (provided it’s not a Grade 1). Wins under the belt, happy owners etc.

Something doesn’t add up for me.

Well it’s a shit or bust strategy that’s for sure....maybe she’s just an average size fish in a very big pond...I think everybody assumes there is a complex plan for every horse in the yard....I’m not sure this is the case...perhaps unless you are in the top 50(sounds crazy just saying it) you kind of get the b or c strategies or no strategy at all...I’d say Willie is the best trainer, I’m far from convinced he’s the best strategist...he is the most flexible and versatile but definitely not the most planful.

There may be a grand scheme plan with her and she may bolt up in this race, the biggest I can remember her being is 10s and she’s been second favourite for a long time I think so she’s hardly gone under the radar. I’d be very surprised if many on here didn’t put her in their portfolio when she was double figures. Many others have put their hat in the ring since then and i don’t entirely understand folks getting excited about her at half the odds if they weren’t excited at double figures before others had even emerged.

I don't see it like that, she was coming from the rear in both races this season and stayed on without being near the level needed for the novice hurdle races. Hidden away makes it sound like a handicap plot but I do think she has been running against superior opposition to avoid any penalties - it gets her race fit too and if it gives her a better chance of winning then avoiding the penalty will only help her. I think she will enjoy the hill (stayed on nicely in the Royal Bond) too. Regardless of the logistics of her race planning previously I think 5s is still good value in a race not giving much away.

Has Willie ever trained the MNH winner and his best Novice Mare for Cheltenham in the same way he's running Ashroe Diamond?

She was definitely his best Autumn Mare, and got her going early with the Royal Bond the early target

He's done this for years, with Mares.

Statuaire last season won the Royal Bond.

SWIW would have too, but for her injury when winning her prep race for it.

One day one of these early Mares will last all the way to March for him.

Could be this year, I suppose.

But I've never seen any of the previous ones as a plot, just taking the races as they come.

The 1/2/3 in the Royal bond were all held up though

So she was in the ideal position

And I wouldn't say she stayed on nicely in the Royal bond, she found little after travelling better than Irish point and as well as marine nationale

Does she have the profile of willies usual winners in this race? Il have a look

Limini had 1 run winning the solerina then won

Let's dance did run against the boys and won the nathaniel lacy easily beating kemboy (was a 2m4f grade 2) having being beaten on debut by the eventual triumph hurdle winner

Laurina won a maiden hurdle then the solerina

Eglantine du seiul came out very early running in August and September and was then put away and won at 50/1 in a poor renewal

Concertista finished second in the race on debut, then got beaten in 2 maiden hurdles and a mares handicap before winning easily

4 of them were 5 Concertista was 6

If the bit about hiding her away is aimed at me it's because I don't think she will run in the Solerina and incur the penalty. DRF behind Vega again and then onto the Mares Novices penalty free.

It wasn’t a dig at you Lbur, more confusion as to how her campaign has panned out. WPM has never been sacred to send one to the Mares with a penalty. It’s only 3 or 5lbs which on the grand scheme of things, isn’t a lot if she was that good.

I wasn't taking it as a dig so apologies if I came that way. I think it's just that my initial use of "hidden away". I do believe that she was pitted in better company initially to see how she went but obviously as it's played out its seeming likelier she'll head here more than anywhere else and I don't see Mullins as one to send her handicapping (can't even think of a recent festival mare of his running in although ive no doubt there is).

That said, I do hope its all irrelevant as we are all on Between Waters at fancy prices arent we? :excitement:

No worries haha! I’ve not really worked her out to be honest. She’s clearly talented but I just have a doubt in all honesty. Maybe WPM feels his best chance of winning on what he’s got to throw at the race is without a penalty.

I did have but cashed her due to no entries etc! Will go back in if she’s declared somewhere soon, which I believe she is.

6 declared in the Solerina on Saturday.

5lb penalty for MNH for the winner

Saylavee
Ashroe Diamond
Halka Du Tabert
Jetara
Whatcouldvebeen
Goodie Two Shoes

….Hills ‘win Solerina’ & MNH;

Ashroe 7-1
Halka 14-1
Saylavee 40-1

A bit of arboring but if anyone fancys magical zoe for this shes 10s across the board but sky have her at 12s in the any race market, this even beats the exchanges.

Credojava got a tendon injury. Owners discusssing plans as we go forward. Obviously not up to date on RTC yesterday

Is the Solerina baffling anyone else? The form of AD's races is better, but I'm not sure she was really in any of them. FDT looked more visually nice but what did she do? Finding it impossible to make a pre race call

….Ashroe Diamond into 4-1 after winning Solerina.

Jetara left on 25-1 with nrnb
will get weight at the festival.
less exposed.
form may be franked later and at dublin next week.

Boost to the High Definition form as you say. Nice chance at Cheltenham with the extra experience and weight concession from Ashroe now.

parmenion runs in a bit as well.

Wasn't particularly taken by any of those in the Solerina. Certainly be looking to take on Ashroe Diamond with the penalty if she's fav here...

I see Between Waters doesn't have any entries again though :onthego:

Am i just pocket talking here, but did davy russell not stack them up (when he should have went on) and then ride HDT hands and heels in the finish?
