The Big Breakaway - Ultima

The Tizzard's think a lot of this horse and I was wondering if they might fancy a tilt at The Gold Cup next year but I don't think the horse is mature enough or strong enough yet (he's only just turned 6). I think that this race would be a better option at this stage of his career.

I’d love to see the Skeltons aim Alnadam at the plate next season.

He travelled like a dream in the Ultima until he completely emptied up the hill. And considering Skelton was saying before the festival that he needed soft ground, a return to normal soft festival ground would be perfect.

Just a worry they think he’s better than that & ruin his mark over the course of next season.

I've just taken a cursory glance at some of the archived threads where we've all collectively failed to mention a single handicap winner from page after page after page, and a lot of those threads were started in October/November!! :highly_amused:

I'm a massive hypocrite though because the first chance I get I'm backing Zanza for the Grand Annual. There you go, I broke the trend, page 1, handicap winner!

Think the majority of my returns from handicaps this year (calling them 'returns' feels like a piss take relatively speaking, but every penny in handicaps was welcome! :excitement:) came from going in on write-ups i'd seen on here half an hour or less before the off. That's my strategy for 2022 handicaps, the Naiad thread and drunken last minute darts...

Yeah that is odd, personally I did OK having built numerous multis around Elham Valley, Shantou Flyer, Not That Fuise and Happygolucky but it seems strange that between all the great minds in here we couldn’t find a handicap winner in the ante post discussion...

Sky Pirate did manage it, although I'd all but lost faith come the off!

I had several second placed , Entoucas , Farclas , The Bosses Oscar , Shantou flyer . But overall disappointing :grumpy:.
Will do my best to hold on until N.R.N.B next year ..:apple:.

Phase 1 of the Tizzard's master plan to get TBB handicap mark down to 143 accomplished :encouragement:

I wont be backing any UK handicappers

Or very few anyway

The UK handicappers are raising horses too much for winning uncompetitive races

Whereas the irish are staying on good marks or going up a couple of lbs running in ultra competitive handicaps

I remarked on this prior to the National..

Cloth Cap was 4/1 at the start of the week when he has 18 Irish handicappers to beat.

Watching what happened in Cheltenham handicaps then CC was the best rated Brit (of course) but that was likely to mean less trying to stop the Irish dominating off their ratings.

I wouldnt back anything but Irish runners in the Grand National until further notice.

I’m guessing they will have a serious go at the Ladbroke trophy then work from there.

If that'st the route they take then fair enough, it's a big pot but a win will kill your mark unless you have a potential G1 horse and I think this is one of the differences between UK and Irish trainers, a cute Irish trainer will have a long range target and work back from there to ensure his mark is favourable, many UK trainers overstate their horses abilities and they end up running well in high class races thinking they are potential champions and blowing their mark.
How the changes at Tizzards affect strategy/plans only time will tell though...

I am striking of TBB as am betting proposition from now on. He hasn’t been running with the handbrake on and has been beaten 3 times on the bounce now all of them soundly.

I know the Tizzards think a lot of him, but he’s not coming out with excuses, he’s simply not performing to the levels they thought he would.

I suppose he is only 6 so there is time for the potential to be realised

Too right.
A 2022 Cheltenham handicap thread and people are discussing a UK "Tizzard" trained horse.
If I was headmaster I'd be Ripping it up and telling you to start again.

His handicap rating does look fair though.

Sempo would be my early ultima/kim muir fancy

Simply didn't stay the trip in the Irish national but ran like a horse that has a good few lbs in hand back down in trip

uk dominate the Ultima so I wouldn’t consider an Irish horse in that race. Irish rarely target the race. Kim Muir could be a shout though.

Would that not be because the best 145+ irish handicap horses run in the Irish national instead though

Sempo doesn't stay that trip so he could easily target the ultima if his mark is 145+

This far out its a fairly pointless discussion though as he could bolt up in a handicap at punchestown and be rated 152 after
