2016 Ultima Business Solutions Handicap Chase

Love the way statto throws up one of his stats and Ben ignores it :highly_amused::cool:

I'm beginning to think it's no wonder Minella Rocco's participation in this was totally disregarded as soon as it was left on the same mark for his last run.

As i've said, I like Upswing but what do we make of Regal Encore still entered up? If this lines up it reeks.

Last year was his first year out of novice hurdles. he was quiet with just 2 runs before xmas - 2 and 2.5 miles showing little. Early feb he made his step up to 23f and hacked up off 131 to get him in the pertemps where he ran a solid 7th. It's now obvious that they knew he was a 3 miler.

This year he's novice chasing but is another stepped into open company. He's had 6 chases already so he's very experienced but he still hasn't been past 21f :highly_amused:

The other interesting point is that his form is largely average bar one run.......... when he hacked up at Plumpton of all places :highly_amused:

Gerraghty has been on for all runs this season which maybe a co-incidence but also probably unusual for one of this calibre. Lastly, bar his chase debut he's always turned up when fresh with form of 122441 when absent for 60 days+.

Very interesting if turning up here and not the shorter trip in the brown plate.

Can't argue with any of that Ben - he's the JP runner that I like.

I can't remember where I saw or read it but someone was talking up regal encore as a good thing wherever he runs, has been plotted for a handicap at the festival!

I'm looking to get with Holywell but as he's so ground dependent I'll be waiting until I've dug my heel into a chunk of Prestbury Park before parting with my cash, good to soft he will run a massive race, soft and he's as good as a NR

Ista - He finished a good 4th in last seasons Gold Cup when the going turned soft. Although good ground would be a big +

I have have him as the most likely winner of this too. I watched his 2014 win of this race last night and the holywell and Ma Fieulle pulled clear of the field. He'll have 8lb more on this occasion but I don't think that will stop him.

Id much prefer Cause of Causes to Regal Encore if he ran here.

McManus horses get overbet in handicaps

In the last decade before retirement McCoy rode just 4 handicap winners at the festival for his boss.

2006 Cheltenham Club Novices' H'cap Chase Reveillez James Fanshawe A P McCoy
2009 Ultima Handicap Chase Wichita Lineman Jonjo O'Neill A P McCoy
2012 Vincent O'Brien County H'cap Hurdle Alderwood Tom Mullins IRE A P McCoy
2013 Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase Alderwood Tom Mullins IRE A P McCoy

FM - a horse who would have gone very close on good ground in last years Gold Cup had it not rained can get into this with 11st 2lb ?
And, if I'm not mistaken, he had the added handicap of having to carry Richie McLernon round lol

One of the most painful Cheltenham memories for me that, had my conkers on Maljimar, backed him at 33s and all the way down to 14s to pay off the mortgage, jumped the last 3l clear and Daryl Jacob just couldn't hang on.
If on one side of my gravestone they write a list of biggest disappointments this will be on there....

:encouragement: but who'll be riding him this year?

Fingers crossed that Doctor Harper & Fingal Bay get in - Believe Pipe is desperate to get The Doctor in this, running it over 2 miles all year but winning hurdle form all over longer including 3 miles at Aintree last year & Fingals fourth in the Hennessey doesn't look bad & he's been dropped a couple of pounds since then too.

Is cause of causes not nailed on kim Muir? Sure Elliot has been saying Jamie Codd has been riding and he'd love to get it in that race as ''he's pulling his arms out''

Sausalito Sunrise & Unioniste both declared for Kelso onSunday - so 2 out of the first 24 not likely to run here !

But near bottom weight in Ultima and won on that course last year. They would have cause to switch if minded.

Follow Geraghty when market vibes are good

If you want a jockey to follow at The Festival look no further than Barry Geraghty. His rides since 2000 show a €1.28 level-stake profit of €28.20 (33 winners from 235 rides, 14 per cent), and this will be his first Festival as retained rider for JP McManus, who has averaged three winners per meeting since 2012. Overall Geraghty's handicap mounts have returned a €12.88 loss (seven wins from 83 rides), but ruling out those at 14-1 or bigger cuts the sample to 49 rides and converts the loss to a £29.63 profit. Should any of Geraghty's mounts for McManus in handicaps attract strong market support it could pay to follow the money.

Holywell taken out of the Gold Cup:triumphant:
