2016 Gold Cup

So, Mullins will run:

Djakadam
Vatour
Don Poli
On His Own

And he intends to also run:

Sir Des Champs
Boston Bob
Valseur Lido
Ballycasey

And Giggingstown will also have declared:

Don Cossack
First Leiutenant
No More Heroes
Road To Riches
Roi Du Mee
Wounded Warrior

I don't remember this sort of thing happening years ago.
Will Mullins really have 8 and Giggingstown also have 8 runners ?

Lydia sums up about 10 pages of this thread ;)

Bad news notwithstanding, there are two key game-changers left for the Gold Cup market. First, Djakadam still needs to thump the likes of Many Clouds at Cheltenham later this month to convince connections he is their Gold Cup horse and not Vautour. A rallying second as a six-year-old last year is not enough to be certain of the all-important services of Ruby Walsh. Bookmaker reaction to this decision, when it comes, will be marked.

Second, Road To Riches's performance in the Irish Gold Cup (formerly Irish Hennessy) should help decide whether he runs here or in the Ryanair, but Don Poli remains an uncertain runner at Leopardstown, Gigginstown have confirmed. Related to this development is Bryan Cooper's choice of mount, to which bookmakers might over-react.

I'm not getting the prep for Djackadam as a leading contender and current fav for the Gold Cup.Ran over 2m 4 last time out told us nothing.Beating Many Clouds et al in Cotswald Chase wont convince me he is worthy of being the fav either. Why hasnt he ran in the recognised trials ie King George, Lexus, or Irish Gold Cup,....for me I think the King George is going to prove the best trial this season as if Don Cossack hadnt fallen the 3 top rated chsers woukd have fought out the finish and I expect that will hapoen in the Gold Cup.

Don Cossack is obviously a major player but he now has 3 'Fs' to his name, his UK record reads F 3 F and his Cheltenham record reads F 3, for a horse so talented he has plenty to prove but he certainly has the ability to do just that

Timing wise similar enough to the Thyestes prep run last year.

you would think he wanted to train the first five ...

Just seems to be the Mullins way, preparing horses appears to be something he has his own ideas about, look at the years of small field runs he gave Hurricane Fly, but when he brought him to the fez he was always up for it, the distance thing didn't apply, that is a mystery, but he gets results. For me the best form on offer for this years Gold cup is last years Gold cup, and if you look at how close Djakadam came to beating Coneygree, closing up the hill and to the line, another 100 yards and we would be talking about him potentially being a dual champion.

I actually thought CG was going away from Djakadam again towards the line. But anyway, I think CG would have won the King George and 1L behind in the Gold Cup is solid form.

The biggest doubt in my mind about Djackadam is how much did that brutal Gold Cup take out of him...ok he won on his reappearance but against stayers over a shorter trip...hasnt been seen since..Road To Riches run once and hasnt been seen since and Conygree ran once then out for rest of season..coincidence or the effects of a very hard race in Gokd Cup..add to that Cue Card, Vautour, Don Cossack have all achieved a much higher rating tgan Djackadam and in my opinion all of them shoukd be ahead of Djackadam in the betting for this years big one...

There's also the David Mullins early season comment that Djakadam can't win a Gold cup, who knows, you have to go with your own thought processes, at least if you lose in any race you do so with your own choice, hard not to be swayed though. By the week of the race I'll either fancy everything or I will have arrived at the conclusion that nothing can win

He's 25/1 with Paddy Power to train the first 3 home in the Gold Cup if that's of interest to anyone. A bigger price than I expected!

The reason the odds are as big as 25/1 and if not bigger elsewhere is because you're talking about road to riches, don Cossack and cue card not to mention the rest not to finish in the placings, in my books it's highly unlikely, I've come to the conclusion the Djakadam comes 1st, Don Cossack 2nd and Vautour in 3rd, and those placings will be strongly push by road to riches if this is his target and not the ryan air

WPM won't just have 3 runners though, in fact he could have almost half of the field. Personally I can't have Don Poli out of the first three. I'd also have Vautour and Djackadam in front of the others. You can tell I've taken the 25/1 :p

Gold Cup Tricast on the day ...

If Vautour is switched elsewhere I cant see Willie having the front 3.

I keep adding Vautour at 7s NRNB into my multiples. Combining that with say Limini for Mares Novice Hurdle gets you more or less the same price of 25s and a single on Limini if Vautour doesnt run. Just my opinion.

Vautour gone to 5s with paddypowers what do fellas think will he be a different horse come March he loves Cheltenham

Stan James stand out 8s and 8.6 on the machine.
I thought his JLT performance last year was one of the best I've seen for years, probably the best since Master Minded won the champion chase at 5 by half the track, I strongly believed he needed to be aimed at the blue ribband after that and I haven't changed my mind, I just remember seeing Rubys face when Cue Card collared him at Kempton and the shock was clear, I think it's put some doubts in connections minds.
All that said, Don Cossack hasn't yet proved he acts at the track and Don Poli hasn't impressed this season to date, Djakadam hasn't had a clear prep and if the ground quickens up he will have plenty of questions to answer, I think Cue Card has the best form in the book and is the one to beat with Vatour probably next best...
