2016 Gold Cup

Hello guys! Its been a while and hope everyone is doing well. :)

MrM - I love thought thinking with Vautour wrt the 14/1 double. Like you say, if he gets beat in the King George then I doubt he'll be going down the gold cup route. You've convinced me - I'm on!

Do you think it's a bit risky with these anti-post special doubles? You first have to bet enough to make it worth your while to lay. Then the horse has to guarantee to run in both races.

I guess thats the name of gambling. :D

Hi LR, the thing with this bet is that he doesn't necessarily have to run in both races, if he ran in, and won, the KG, his price would immediately be cut drastically for the Gold cup, that would be the time to lay him. You could then be looking at a nice profit before the fez even kicks off, and if he then ran in the Gold cup, if you've got your numbers right, you make money whether he wins or loses.

Gotcha MMG, so he just has to run in the KG to keep the bet alive. Then if you lay him for the GC and he doesn't run, then it will be classed as a losing run:encouragement:

I guess we should be taking the 14's now that a main soft ground danger has not even been entered in the race(CG)!

Saw Coneygree in the flesh today, before, during and after the race and he looked fantastic, the race was never in doubt and he had a great blow after which to me shows he's got more to come this year, now for a horse that is generally around 6/1 for the gold cup he looked an incredible bet for that today, i know he didn't beat much in the second horse home today and Southfield theatre was never really at the races he still impressed with his relentless galloping and jumping technique, he is now at the fore to my ante post betting in doubles, trebles and yankees!! Saw mark bradstock as wel and he was more than impressed and said that was just what the doctor ordered and the 1st race back was his only real worry coming back into the season

Do you not think he is ground dependant? A good ground gold cup would be a big worry for me.

It's true they all say that Coneygree needs soft ground, but he has won and performed well on good to soft ground, i believe the only reason they dont run him on real good ground is because how delicate a horse that Coneygree is, i think he could perform on ground that is leaning more to good than soft, but either way i can only see soft in the going come the festival in march again

It will take a special horse to beat Coneygree

Completely agree, but if they all stay fit we're in for a vintage Gold Cup because for me there are a few special horses out there.
Vatour and Don Poli are genuine Gold Cup contenders and Don Cossack could stay too, I'd love to see that four line up and when you throw in last seasons 2nd and 3rd you have probably the strongest field in years.
March is still a long way off though...

I ended up watching Vautour winning his race at the festival during the week. It was the performance of the week.

Do we now add Cue Card's name into this mix ?

The Cue Card performance looked more of a Gold cup prep than the Vautour one, early days of course but I'd be more inclined to side with CC at this stage, already covered on Vautour but he has a lot to prove regarding the distance.

5/1 is a proper punting price for Cue Card in the king george.

Agreed.
I'd expect a few to swerve the race too so whilst it's got the look of a second Gold Cup I don't see them all going....

And waters muddied again

Smad place looks a different animal

Definitely, but like Cue Card, wouldn't you wish you had this kind of form in another year ?
This has the makings of being a ridiculous gold cup, the depth of which I've never seen....

Have to be happy with that start to the season for Don Poli. Saddle slipped on final circuit and was up against Many Clouds who'd already had a run into him. Still hits that lazy spot but if he's within touching distance of the leaders in March at the bottom of the hill, you'd be a brave man to not fancy him.

I was quite impressed with how much he found when he came under pressure about three out, that's the mark of a solid stayer to me.

Mr McG has called it right with Djakdam looking like Ricci no 1 for the gold cup.Paddy Power have got Vautour out to 7's and Djakdam at 6's and they seem to call it right re the Mullins horses more times than not.

Yes that's interesting and the same firm have cut Vautour to 5/2 for the Ryanair, I'm not ripping my QM tickets up yet though.
