JP could have played games with Yanworth and Minella Rocco but quickly ( maybe too quickly) nominated their targets.

“I think the Ryanair Chase is probably the weakest race of the Festival, and I would dearly love Vautour to run because I wouldn’t have to choose between him and Djakadam in the Gold Cup,”

“I’d say there’s no chance he’ll run in it, but I’ll keep dreaming. I can’t see it happening, but I’m going to keep at it. I heard Road To Riches is going to run in this race, but I think he’s too slow, and I really fancy Smashing.”


Asked by host Bell what would be the greatest influence in choosing between Djakadam and Vautour should both head to the Gold Cup, Walsh replied: “They will work in the Curragh seven days before the Gold Cup and how they work that day will probably decide which I ride.”


After assessing that most of the horses entered in the Gold Cup had no chance, Walsh added: “Cue Card won’t stay, Djakadam has a great chance, and Don Cossack is definitely the class horse but the big worry with him would be his record at Cheltenham and his record in big-field races. He’s definitely a much easier ride in a smaller field than in a big field.

“And the same would apply to Don Poli, who seems to lack a gear. He would be a hard ride in a big field. A horse who races behind the bridle, like him, would need everything to go his way to get you in the right positions.”

Quizzed why he was so confident Cue Card wouldn’t stay and yet Vautour, who succumbed to that rival’s late rally at Kempton, would, Walsh explained: “You only have one King George to judge Vautour on but if you analyse the data from all of Cue Card’s King Georges, there’s enough to conclude he won’t stay.

“Also, Willie will have Vautour a lot better than he had him in the King George. I think he will stay – I’ve had no doubt about his stamina since day one.”

Walsh’s good friend and fellow panellist at the preview night, Tony McCoy, was having none of it.

Comparing Vautour to Gordon Richards’ One Man, who, after two failed bids in the Gold Cup, landed the Champion Chase on the penultimate start of his seven-year career, he insisted: “He has no chance of staying. He’s One Man – that’s what he is.

“He’ll probably win the next two or three King Georges and he’ll win a Champion Chase. The last two and a half furlongs of the Gold Cup are a gruel and no matter how much better he is (than his rivals) he won’t stay.

“Only three horses - Don Cossack, Djakadam and Don Poli – are good enough stayers to win the Gold Cup,” McCoy asserted, before firing a warning shot at Walsh: “Don’t pick the wrong one, that’s all I’m saying.”

"I would hope he goes for the Gold Cup, but we're going to have to see what way they call it," the County Meath handler told the Mirror.

"I honestly don't think the Ryanair will suit him - I think it's too short.

"He got the (Gold Cup) trip very well last year. As Coneygree isn't in it, I imagine he'd have every chance of beating the second (Djakadam)."
 
Keep over thinking about Vautour, just something in my head telling me that if it doesn't stay 3m at Kempton in a steady run race, it's impossible to back over 3m2f round Cheltenham? In a race where a few could make the running.....interesting still and if it stays it's a danger?

There is something about this horse where I think he becomes a different animal around the Cheltenham ground, track and atmosphere. He will probably be my gamble of the week on the last day if the ground is gs at worst.
 
Been a reader for a while and now confident enough to post !!!!!!!! Have been all over DC for his race since October and have had some decent bets on him ( The biggest was 5 mins after he fell in the KG). Have lately been thinking of putting a few quid on Djakadam. Im in the Vautour wont stay camp and AP's comments are encouraging, would like to wait but if Ruby chooses Djakadam obviously the price will tumble even further.

I'm a big fan of Djakadam, fall last time not ideal and 2 falls in 3 visits to the track not encouraging, but it's hard to dispute that if he stays on his feet he will be thereabouts at the finish. He didn't get the acclaim he deserved last year because Coneygree was stunning, take him out of that race last year and Djakadam was a brilliant winner at just 6 years old, had he then stayed on his feet and won last time you would be offered 4/6 now, or lower, he's great value, if he remains upright.

David Casey very strong on Djakadam

DC: Vautour would be better in Ryanair. Not convinced stay. Don Poli course form. Very lazy. ANyone who backs him won't be happy mid race
DC: Djakadam fan. Trained for one race and one race only. Unfortunate he fell in Cheltenham last time. Working well. Year strong & better
DC: Not overly concerned about his fall. Very good jumper. Generally brilliant. Just unfortunate
DC: Don Cossack main danger. Wins King George if he stands up. WOrry slightly about how he travels through race
