2015 Gold Cup

You are too honest MMG. I admire his achievements but this roadshow is starting to grate already.

Exactly my thinking mayo, the hangers on are coming out of the woodwork to corner the market in being sycophantic and grovelling, all of them continually repeating the same thing struggling to find new adjectives for his magnificence. We all watch as much horse racing as they do, we don't need them to keep stuffing cameras in his face to remind us it's coming to the end of a legendary career, we all know that and they are spoiling it for everyone by their continual dredging.

:D Quality rant.

:D Enjoyed that MG.

He was a legend at 3000, A bigger one at 4000. Dont need to do it all again at 4300ish. It is not his fault though.

A few bits of blue for Carlingford Lough since AP confirmed he will ride. expect it will continue. Smad Place being backed in a few places too.

Does anyone here give Bobs Worth any chance? I really think he is the forgotten horse and at the price has to have a e/w chance.

He could rise to the occasion.

OV is all over him. :encouragement:

Bobs Worth

He’s only had the one run in the Lexus in Ireland, but that was always the plan. He’s got one more bit of work to do, the plan is to go to Newbury on Sunday if the ground isn’t too bad. He comes in there fresh and well. Barry was pleased with him in Ireland and he said if you can get him to Cheltenham in the same form on better ground he’ll be there. It was a strange Gold Cup last year where he just stopped after the last and jinked left – he’d never done that before. The one thing we always said was if he’s anywhere on the premises jumping the last he’ll gallop up the hill as he always has, five or six times, but he didn’t. He hasn’t got the class of a Sprinter Sacre, but my God he tries and he always does and sure, it does take a lot out of them. He’d won at three Festivals on the trot before that, remember, which is no mean feat.

I agree LR, am getting tired of BG especially talking up these henderson horses when its plain to see with our own eyes that theyre just not firing....Bobs Worth, West Wizard, Josses Hill,Gaitway, Beat That, Vaniteux....and on it goes!!

Yes your right about this. Bobs Worth the prime example for me. Clearly a horse that can handle testing conditions well yet this was used as an excuse for his run in the Lexus, yet we had the excuse that conditions were too quick for him in the Gold Cup last year.......which is it Barry?!

Did any of BG's short priced favs get placed let alone win last year?

Someone tell me the stats please.

PRICEWISE

He said: "I'm really hoping Tony McCoy can win the Gold Cup, if I could get some financial gain out of him winning that would make it even better. But I really like the horse and I think it has a great chance."

While Carlingford Lough is a general 10-1 shot, Road To Riches is as short as 6-1 for the Grade 1, but Segal is not convinced he can triumph next month.

In response to a question about the chances of the eight-year-old, Segal added: "Of all the ones at the top of the market he is the one that I fancy the least. I just think he was winning races when other horses weren't fit at the start of the season. I just don't think he has top-class form and will probably need to find 10lbs."

Thanks for the quotes Cheltenham.

I normally agree with people like Tom Segal when they have valid reasoning and can see his point about Carlingford Lough however I am totally bemused about the Road to Riches comments I've seen floating around, in that he has only beaten unfit horses at the start of the season. I could understand that argument with regards to the Jnwine, but he didn't just win that race, he lead a good quality field a merry dance and was flying away at then end. Then in the Lexus he gave the last two gold cup winners a beating and outstayed lasts years gold cup second on the run-in who'd already had the benefit or a run.

I get that seeing the last two gold cup winners come home last and second last places a few doubts about that form and get that the ground was far from ideal for either, but the same can be said for most of the runners in that field including Road to Riches. Additionally, I don't buy for a second that Bob's Worth (a horse with a fantastic record when fresh) or Lord Windermere weren't properly tuned up for the race and the trainers comments before the race would suggest they were:

Henderson: “Bobs Worth has been in very good form recently. He has bloomed in the last three weeks and schooled with Barry the other day. We both thought it was as good as we had ever seen him. He’s done plenty of work but will come on for it and the heavy rain on soft ground is a worry for him, but he has to go.”

Culloty on LW: “It looks a very competitive renewal but I’m very happy with my horse. The heavy ground won’t be ideal but they all have to get through it.”

In light of this I don't think the unfit comments stand up to much at all. Road to Riches obviously does't have Cheltenham form which is my biggest concern but he has looked an entirely different proposition since Noel Meade openly said they have changed his diet and how they train him and I feel totally the opposite to Pricewise in that of the likely contenders he is perhaps the most promising.

Lessey - I am with you 100% on RTR even though I have backed him.

RTR is a good ground horse and still managed to beat the so called "not so fit" horses in the Lexus on soft. The horses that weren't fit that day were BW and CL, then the later looked the part when winning the HGC when fit, he's a major player if he can keep up with the GC pace. My main concered with RTR would be how he will handle the track, he seems to handle Leopardstown so lets see about Chelts. I have faith in him. :encouragement:

Bobs Worth on Good Ground is 111115 and on all other going descriptions he is 21132168.

I have no idea what happened in last years Gold Cup but something strange happened in that race.

I think it had something to do with both SC and BW running in opposite directions half way up the hill.

1. If you run diagnoally up a hill no matter if you are a horse or human your balance will not be the same.
2. You are trying to cover more ground than running in a straight line.

Put both those factors together and you will lose a length or 2 over a short distance.

Thanks LR, makes me feel like I'm not talking tripe when someone agrees. I agree RtR is far from home and hosed and he has to handle the track but I just can't make out why people are crabbing his form when since his Galway plate success, its been top drawer. I can only assume it's because people like Segal have long since missed the value on him and are looking for arguments to strengthen their selections…fair enough.

I agree that wasn't Bob's best ground OV but he won the Lexus the year before on soft going, albeit he had a run before that but he was throughly beaten by a horse that should also relish a return to better going. I'm getting a little defensive because he is my main hope for the gold cup currently but if Bobs Worth would of won the Lexus, would anyone of said he beat unfit horses?

No probs Lessey.

Re BW and SC, if you watch the race back you will see both horses decide to switch right and left. Imagine yourself running up a hill in a straight line and then switching diagonally, your lead leg would always be shorter than your trailing leg when going uphill which would then take you off balance, and when off balance your brain will be working overtime trying to correct your mechanics. The laws of physics says your weight will not be central and gravity would be pulling you to the left or right.

One thing I've noticed is that there are plenty of us willing to ignore a poor prep but disregard good ones, including myself.
I've been fancying Lord Windermere and more or less ignoring the likes of RTR and CL, and there are plenty of supporters of Bobsworth, but these are horses that, if it wasn't the festival, you would look at the form and immediately dismiss them. I'm going to look for a few to back in multis that have been having a good season and done all that's asked of them, the two I've mentioned above will be featuring, there are other races too where the same logic applies.
