2026 Gold Cup

Are they even going? Skipped it last two years. Won't have either of PT or MW on and I'd say a long way down on the jockey bookings. Whilst I get the angle, I can't see how he shortens much before then unless he wins the Irish Gold Cup
I’d say his price is about right, possibly more on the generous side than not?
Certainly his run in the Savills earns him the right to run with a chance and we know he stays unlike a fair few shorter than him.
As for his jockey, well he’s used to Amateurs so don’t think that’s an issue personally.
I’ve talked myself into covering him anyway.

JP not one to follow up the Gold Cup with the National anymore after Synchronized and we know that Willie is a creature of habit with the routes he takes with his horses, so I wouldn't be shocked if they skipped it again to keep him frehs.

But I do agree he's not the worst shout in the world if he rocks up. Although if people are put off by a 10year old Galopin in the GC, you'd discount IAM even quicker

I can definitely see what you say re not turning up, but I can see the possibility it may be different this year with his last run and maybe some doubts about GDC they may have? And last years winner for JP not really enhancing his chances.
Another string to the bow for trainer and owner in the big race may just be what they want this year.
Anyway at 35 I will take a risk.

Lecky Watson at a bigger price would appeal more to me.

IAM might have someone like Cobden riding which obviously wouldn't be a negative.

I'm a bit unsure what's going on with lecky watson. I'm in no doubt they have the handbrake on, but I'm not sure for what reason. He hasn't been ridden prominently in either run which is his preference, and he also looked to get tired in his last run having travelled into it well, and he's one I think is a strong stayer so I'd say he probably still wasn't fully fit.

They're either building him up slowly to a gold cup without being too hard on him, which you'd imagine should be the target given his performances at the track. Or they're minding his mark for the grand national, which would seem a bit odd given his liking for cheltenham. Or also possible, they're thinking about going gold cup and grand national, and so would want him very fresh for spring if they're thinking of going for both.

….i recall a post on here witnessing Mullins surprised reaction when he was told of LWs mark. I’m of a view that they very much have the GN in mind for him, he was 40-1 for a bit but is a best 33s now.

Always thought the RSA Chase (or whatever it is called these days) takes an awful lot out of a novice. Not a bad idea to give him an easy reintroduction this season.

Yeah it's possible they're holding onto him a bit until the national weights are released, then we might see a better run.

Would surprise me if they skipped the gold cup though. Would seem weird to skip an open looking gold cup with the brown advisory winner. I'd imagine he could run in both but I dont know without checking if thats something mullins does too often.

Ruby has given his Gold Cup 123....

Galopin
I Am Maximus
Haiti Coleurs

Very open for sure. Any of 8 could win at this point in time. Take your pick !
I have a terrible record in the gold cup

Only backed A Plus Tard and GDC (second time) as shirt odds, in 12-13 years of doing this

This year, could make an argument for loads of them

I’m kind of hoping of a mud fest, and backing something like Stella Story at 150’s on the machine lol

As good an analyst as Ruby is, is as bad a tipster he is.

The old with Rory Delargy is a great listen, but Ruby's tips are recency and outcome bias taken flesh

General discussion point about Myertown...

I have backed him for the Gold Cup at 100/1 EW.

Due to his fall in the Newbury gold Cup and weather restrictions, he's still yet to complete a race this season, never mind looking like a gold Cup prospect.

He runs this weekend in a handicap off a mark of 142.

I'm coming round to thinking that he will now follow the Corach Rambler route of back to back Ultimas and maybe a crack at the Grand National.

But he's 9 years old so if they don't go for the Gold Cup they won't really get another crack at it in what is a very open year.

What are people's thoughts? or has anyone heard anything definitive?

Win this weekend then Ultima or Gold Cup then GN

Lose this weekend then Ultima.

My thoughts.

I have backed him for both as well. I do think though that the Ultima and Grand National are more realistic. Corach Rambler won the 2nd of his Ultimas off 147 and anywhere near 142 gives him a winning chance.
