Not a strong opinion FM , but gonna do Benatar today a/p @ 20-1.Have to say , I don't seem to do very well in this race,

Benatar has the right profile BC. Mister Whitaker and Rather Be also on the shortlist after last season's 1-2 on the novice handicap at the festival.
 
Bit of a rubbish opinion from me, but the race seems like it is targeted by certain trainers, O'Neill (2), Twiston-Davies (3) & Nicholls (2) have won 7 of the last 10 renewals. Nicholls is currently mob handed with 10 entries currently so I will see which of his he leaves in.

I will also keep an eye on the other 2 trainers as well as David Pipe, whose old man used to love this race, before deciding where to part with my money.
 
I have a strong view that Rather Be is a proper horse, whether that makes him the winner of this or not is another matter but he was a sound jumper as a novice and goes on any ground, trip looks ideal and he looks sure to be in the shake up if he runs...

I like rather be, but it maybe influenced with his near miss at the festival. He got 6lb for that, and starts on 149 i assume.
Liked Gold present this time last year as a well handicapped horse but he started off on 142. reminds me of him.
there may be some improvement still with rather be I reckon.
 
You could be right there quevega but he wouldn't have been at his best on that ground and was a 143 rated hurdler so he has class and I am expecting some improvement on that 149 chase rating.
 
I have gone for Baron Alco. Was impressed by his return run. Prior to this was 2nd to Road To Respect at Chelt in 2017 will have matured since then and i suspect has been primed for this.

Caught my eye as well Joe, didn't see the run but his form is 2122/2 the four 2s are behind Charbel, Road To Respect, Top Notch & Whisper, 2 of which are over C&D. Will be interesting to see which one Jamie Moore is on, between him and Benetar

Taken the 11.5's for Kalondra

I think Rather Be and Mister Whitaker novice form won't stand up when tested. You can argue that Mister Whitaker has ran since outside novice company LTO however, they were all novices the previous season.

I have Kalondra as a mid 150's horse based on his last two runs. He was well clear of the field in April, by-passing the mud in March at Cheltenham, when beaten by two horses who I think we're well in based on Traffic most recent win - Traffic is now a 14lbs higher in the weights since that win. The second placed horse, Art Of Payroll, was running after a wind op and could be anything after switching over to Harry Fry

I'm not saying Kalondra will need it, but the shorter run in on the Old course will squash any doubts I have with him staying.

Rated 1lbs higher since his first run over fences, despite winning 2 races (one over CD) and placing a close 3rd in a Grade 2 over CD. Rated 1lbs higher than his hurdle mark, one which saw him finished 10 lengths from the winner, Supersundae, in a competitive coral cup.

I have Benatar shortlisted, hoping that he settles in a bigger field, and Baron Alco up there two but feel we may have see him run up to his mark LTO. My concerns with both is the trainer, this isnt really a race he chucks horse at and wins.

For me, Kalondra is ticking all of the boxes, so much so that I'm done with this race now, my bet is in. Kalondra to win
 
I LIke Kalondra too -
given the likely decent ground I'd be surprised if anything outside the first few in betting will win.
maybe Movewiththetimes if he's been to martinstown for magic grass.

So shortlist of four for me
Kalondra
Baron Alco
Rather Be
Mr Whitaker
Think Rather Be could be ahead of it's mark and Mr Whitaker looked v good the other day (think this form will hold up IMO)

He does target this meeting and this is probably a completely irrelevant point, but 6 of his last 10 runners have PU....

On Baron Alco he finished 2nd in a festival handicap off the same mark, to a horse who he was giving 1lb to, who has since won 3 G1s.

Also given the horse was off 557 days surely he is entitled to improve for the run.

The horses to beat him over fences are as follows:

Whisper - who he gave 5lb to by 2.5L now rated 167.
Top Notch - beat 5L now rated 162, had the now 156 rated Le Prezien in behind in 3rd.
Road To Respect - Beat 6L giving him 1lb now rated 169.
Charbel - beat him by a head and was ahead again after the line in receipt of 12lb follow 557 day lay off.

For me the big thing is if Jamie Moore is on him.
