How you approach the festival

I strongly recommend doing the placepot at the big festivals Kev. There is so much dead money in the pools that it can lead to really good payouts if you can get a few of the fancied horses out of the frame.

Jono you probably know better than me but suspect you could have profited backing favourites in Grade1 races over last 2/3 festivals ?

Yep it has Mayo...

2016 + 11.17 profit
2015 + 1.6 profit
2014 + 3.53 profit

Total + 16.3 profit from a 1 pt stake on each grade 1 fav (last year boosted this considerably)

:encouragement: Markets are so well informed for these races. Taking best morning prices you could do even better.

Just done a quick look at 2016
Davy Russell had 4 handicap rides.

Ultima, 4th of 23 @ 10/1
Coral, 1st of 26 @ 12/1
Pertemps, 1st of 24 @ 14/1
Grand Annual, 2nd of24 @ 8/1

Giving Handicap Form figures at 2016 festival of 4112, all in 20+ field races!!!!!!

That's given me the urge to look back over a longer timeframe....

Wow, they are some impressive figures! I was are of his strong win record over the last few festivals but hadn't looked into his place record.

An 2pt (1pt ew) 4-fold (if you knew his rides at the start of the week) would have got you 987pt profit :encouragement:

Great stats there too Statto. Very keen to see his handicap figures over the 5 years too...might take a look now

All your bits answered I think jono.... I used to go to the festival (Tuesday) with XXX amount in my pocket. I would bet, eat and drink, and be over the moon if I didn't need to use my debit card! Does anyone still do that? I remember being empty after the champion hurdle so had to get the debit card out ready for Quevega... she got me back level, before I drank the rest away... It was a fun way of enjoying the festival and although I can't see myself ever doing that again ... it was a fun enough way to get me hooked!

I pretty much do that for the entire week (have X amount for the festival and hope that covers the whole week)...is it bad I'm still doing that ha! :very_drunk:

Good to hear most on here also bet all on 28 races...don't feel bad about doing so now!

I'd just be disappointed if I had had a profitable festival but was downhearted because I'd spent a fortune on cocaine and strippers.

Unlikely.:highly_amused:

Kevloaf does not endorse the use of cocaine or strippers

:D hate having to top up during the week and usually ok even when losing overall. saturday morning after cheltenham is when holidays for rest of year get decided.

That's a decent festival...

If I had a decent win I'd buy a leg or more in a horse ...right now Pauling would be my trainer of choice.

That's a decent festival...

Doesn't count, the winner was carried out by some lunatic Frenchman....

I spray money everywhere, and hope to get some back :D

I don't mind tying the money up for long periods, as I only bet in small amounts, and if I can get a few live bets to the festival I have a decent chance of making profits.

Last year I got very, very, very lucky, as I've no idea how Ivanovich Gorbatov won that Triumph, and I had that in a double with the Broncos, along with some other stuff, too.

I chuck my freebets at multiples, and anything I think may be targeting races before they've shortened.

I read the Howard book, and Jumping Prospects, hoping to get a bit of an insight. From there it's just watching races, and hovering over Oddschecker as horses are running, too.

It's a cheap(ish) hobby for me, and one I get huge amounts of entertainment from, relative to the cost, in comparison to going out drinking 3/4 nights a week :very_drunk:

I mainly bet A.P for the festival, and yes , like a moth to the flame , all 28 races.!!., though I have eased up on the handicaps
this year, definitely my Achilles heel for fez betting .What can be better than watching a horse fly up that hill and win at 4-1 when you
know youv'e backed it at 16's !!. Dulls the pain of the A.P. non runners and raceswitchers !. Most of my A.P bets are L.15's/ L31's , smaller stakes . and during the raceweek a fiver a race ,when i'm at the course, Tues, Wed for the last 4 years.
Dont particularly follow trends and stats, but read them to back up my choices .(hopefully ). sometimes have a L.15 etc on a Jockey or Trainer each day. Thurs /fri usually watch in a bookies .

Part 2. = I have managed to make a modest profit for the last 4 years , But no Lifechangers !, Maybe this year !!???.
As mentioned , definitely struggle in the handicaps , so only had a few bets on those compared to last year ., Overall
i think i've done ok on the main races, so maybe should concentrate on those .,

Im the same here!

I'm a little boring in my approach. I have a small AP portfolio of around 4-6 bets, then bet on the day for the other races. I tend to ignore some races, such as, cross country, fox hunters, Grand Annual for example.

I generally bet in around 4/5 races on the day, sometimes a couple of horses in big fields. Generally, quite a boring approach but last two festivals have been succesful so hoping for more of the same this year.

Is that similar to how you approach the rest of the season/Saturdays/flat festivals etc?

Boring depends on how you get your enjoyment. Don't need to defend your approach if it is working and more importantly if it is making you happy
