National Hunt Challenge Cup Amateur Riders' Novices' Chase

Why would you run a 12yr old faugheen in a novice race ?
If he’s good enough he should go straight at one of the big ones.
Or stop in and watch it on tv

Gold Cup should be where they go. A chance to make history. If he disappoints on the build up to Cheltenham then they should just leave him at home.

If he's good enough, at 12, he should.

Liklihood is he isn't good enough, doesn't jump well enough and the trainer already has the top 2 in the Gold Cup market and is prone to put a horse in a race it's most likely to win...

The Gold Cup ain't that.

Other trainers might. Tizzard would.

Ruby Walsh on Racing TV. Interesting reaction to the suggestion that Faugheen could be Patrick's mount in this. Certainly not negative and somehow gave the impression that it was not the first time the subject had been raised. 'Why not?' was pretty much his reaction.

*When’s*Dickie Diver*due to run and do you think he could be better than*Champ?

I’m afraid Dickie Diver won’t be seen any time soon as he picked up a bit of a problem and is very much on the sidelines at the moment so I’m not sure how long it’s going to take. It is extremely disappointing and a real blow but I hope to have him back in full training but when that will be, I simply cannot say.

Danny Mullins take on Carefully Selected’s run today...

Winning rider Danny Mullins commented afterwards: “He was entitled to do that and you can see from looking at him there is a bit more to come from him. He made a few novicey mistakes but his class got him through today.

“He should be a nice staying novice chaser for the season.”

Should probably add some form of reasoning :)

The market seems littered with non runners, including towards the top where I think CC & BOD will prove too good for this race. There's then a load of horses either out for the season, not going over 4m or staying hurdling (Commander of Fleet, Brahma Bull, Sam's Profile, Brewinupastorm good examples), then there's not too much left I'm interested in (could never back Sam Spinner and already have Faugheen and Carefully Selected covered)

Thinking about the formula of Cheltenham experience, past success in the race, ability to secure top amateur, likely 150 rated and their potential to handle just under 4 miles, it got me looking at what hand Gordon and JOB will play as trainers, and JP as an owner. I therefore landed on the above 3.

Dallas Des Pictons - GE 'I'm hoping a switch to fences will see him make up into a graded class performer over a trip'. I don't quite see him turning into a top class graded performer. Hopefully he goes to grade 1 Novice Chase over 3m at Leopardstown and runs well but confirms my suspicions of not being top class. Gordon has taken a similar path with some of his other horses before aiming them here and I thought 33/1 looked reasonable given I think all the others he has listed above this fella won't necessarily go (if they do then happy days as I am on any race).

Early Doors made loads of novicey mistakes on debut at Galway but I can forgive those. Jumped well towards the end when headed twice into 3rd and then 4th, staying on well to finish 2nd. Should come on loads for that and wasn't stopping at the line after 2m6f, so I think he'll appreciate going even further. He was apparently subject to a huge JP bet pre martin pipe having run at graded level for most of last season and won the handicap like a good horse. I think he'll be similar to DDP in the sense he'll fall short of being a top class chaser for owner / trainers that have loads of strength and depth.

Glenloe is a complete punt at the prices with cashout.

The only horse iv seen to date that interests me here would be rock point He jumps well, which is very important here, and he looks like hed get the trip to me. He found a second wind last time out, and kept on strongly to the line in second.

Hes one that's likely going to be a simular price near the time. But likely my ew play.

Yep, backed him last week, 40/1 is a very nice price, for a horse who clearly wants to stay further, just based on his two runs this season, and a trainer that has done well in the race in the past also.

Embarrassingly by watching it back iv only just noticed I was watching the wrong horse before, I only glanced the race at the time, and thought it was redzor. As it's very close to his usual colours. So can scrap when i mentioned redzor somewhere here previously.

Has it been mentioned Brahma Bull won’t be participating in the 4 miler?

Nope, don't think, just what had been said previously about him that he probably wouldn't be suited to Cheltenham (I think that's what was said)

I backed him anyway :highly_amused:

I'd deffinately want to see him back up the run too.

I think Rockpoint is a very good bet at 40’s for this race Scooby. He’s completed 3 miles around Cheltenham recently, I don’t think he’s good enough for RSA so it may be a race he can realistically compete in given the limited horses in the current market.

IMO, he backed up his seasonal debut with his last run, it was enough for me, both times finishing or staying on well to the line.

Danger is Colin putting him in a handicap, but he don't usually think like that, so would hope that wouldn't happen.

Added faugheen at 33s.
40s available.

PP introduced @just 14s. And if he does run, I'd have to think hes a big chance.
