It's like the horse becomes hypnotised into finding more, but it's probably just great judgement of pace and brilliant jumping on the day that does it.
If you're a jockey on the best horse in behind it can build pressure to see one going so well in front, and you see it all too often that one little mistake then leads to another and before you know it you're getting desperate.
