There is no logic but assessors love to give top/near top weights big old ratings when winning hcaps even if they only have to run up and around their marks.

    • ….my take on the Dan Skelton stable tour;

      Ashtown Lad - possibly Pertemps
      Faivoir - Morebattle & County a possibility
Langer Dan - Coral or MP
Midnight River - Plate if ground is ideal
      Molly Olly’s - MP
      Pembroke - County
      Punta Del Estate - Boodles
TTL - GA (if the weather stays like this, he would have to be in).
      Unexpected Party - GA
West Cork - ‘if we can get a run into him, he could go County.’

West cork entered up this weekend, might drop another couple of lbs too.

I'm baffled by the handicapping of West Cork.
Was 4th in the County last year off 142, went up to 144, was tanking in the Swinton when fell 3 out, had four uninspiring novice chase efforts yet finds himself with a revised hurdle mark of 139, he's very close to be handicapped to win a County on the strength of not being able to just a fence....

Yeah, the 28/1 NRNB 365 were offering was lovely. I see he's 18/1 now, but that would still represent value if he's able to improve on last seasons run in the race.

Being 3lb lower and no champion hurdle 2nd fav somehow bluffing their way into a handicap to worry about there’s an argument he doesn’t need to improve.
I might have to play him soon…

              • 28-1 a/p still available with bet365 on West Cork (18-1 nrnb). That price seems oddly out of line with the rest of the market but Skelton has name checked the County for him.....

                • Get the feeling skelton didnt need much persuading to get him back over hurdles, mentioned before he'd even jumped a fence that west cork could win a smal racel ,finish behind a higher rated winner in a couple of graded races then poss revert to hurdles. he also mentioned it was the owner was wanting him to go over fences.

                  • A few trainer snippets about their AB horses up on RP tonight, one of them Dawn Rising and Joseph said this about him.
                    Joseph O'Brien on Dawn Rising
Dawn Rising is in good shape and he is a possible runner in the Albert Bartlett. He has four runs over hurdles but won't be entered in a handicap. If he goes to Cheltenham then it will more than likely be the Albert Bartlett. He has stayed the trip strongly on his starts over two and a half miles and we do expect him to stay three miles.

                    • Any one know the rules for novices to run in handicaps?

Rules state 4 runs over hurdles. But what if novices have run 4 times, but have only completed races 3 times,
and have pulled up or fallen once out four races?

Basically do they have to complete in four Races or just run/start in 4 races to qualify for handicaps

Pretty sure with any race, it can be rated at the handicappers discretion if the horse makes it to the second last so a fall at second last would count as a run over hurdles for handicapping purposes, a fall at 3 out wouldn't.

                          Well highlighted.

Risk involved, but great to have the option.

I'm annoyed at myself that I can't be arsed to re-check the 'backing last years single figured horses returning at bigger odds' trend.... but my gut tells me it's nailed on

Dunboyne got 1lb collateral so interesting to see if UK handicapper reciprocates.
