To my mind, the most visually impressive winner by far was Laurina in the Mares. Maybe the race fell apart a bit, and what did it beat, but the horse oozed class. Willie Mullins column in the Racing Post rarely gives much away, but for him to say "who knows, she could be Champion Hurdle material " was more than good enough for me. The current 2 milers are nothing special, and whilst Buveur D'air won again, beating Mick Jazz by just over 3 lengths didn't catch my eye. I think that 14/1 is an excellent Champion Hurdle price for the mare.
My other eye catcher considering the ground was Santini in the Albert Bartlett. A slog in that ground favoured other horses, and granted normal Cheltenham ground, it has RSA horse written all over it next year. 16/1 is another cracking price. Both Mullins and Henderson know how to handle very talented horses, and can see their Cheltenham targets well in advance.
Having backed those two in singles and doubles, one also has to throw in two more for that life changing yankee !
I think that Willie Mullins will send Melon chasing next year ( similar route to Footpad this year ) and Melon looks an Arkle horse to me, so that's in, along with the mercurial Samcro for the JLT. If the horse is that future classier Gold Cup horse, then the JLT is a better route at this stage than the RSA which tends to be for the stayers who grind it out.

If I had to take a stab at next seasons targets I'd currently be thinking the following:
Melon Vs Buveur D'air re-match in Champion Hurdle, a neck defeat should not mean Melon is given up on as a potential CH winner, and the fact that bar Laurina as potential, Mullins seems a bit low on contenders as every other one of his was beaten out of site this season in the race.
Laurina to the Mares', because well Apples Jade will go for the Stayers' now IMO, and BDD will go back chasing again probably.
Apples Jade, as above, think she'll go up in trip and take on Penhill in the Stayers' now.
Footpad to step up in trip, I suspect Ryanair before a tilt at the Gold Cup.
Altior vs Douvan in a re-match, IMO Douvan was travelling as well as I had ever seen him travel, gets back to that again next season and sure up his jumping and I think he takes it. I suspect they will have been fed up with Min watching Altior's rear end so he could join Footpad in the Ryanair too.
Presenting Percy Vs Might Bite Vs Native River, something to look forward to. No idea on the winner, but hopefully will be a cracker all the same.
Actually think a shorter distance over fences will suit Next Destination that hurdles did, so would not be surprised should he end up in the Arkle, but worst case the JLT, can't see him going for the RSA, that's a plodders race
Samcro, as has been said before, could go anywhere and probably win! Be surprised if they shove him in the RSA though, that's always a gruelling race. JLT I suspect. Be even more surprised if they stay over hurdles with him.
I think Kalashnikov will make some chaser and I'd expect the Arkle to be his target. Unsure on Summerville Boy, but a step up in trip wouldn't be out of the question I'd imagine, given the way he finishes his races off.
Be interested to see where they go with Black Op too.
Aside from that there are a couple that never turned up to the festival that are of interest for next season too, Breaken, Danny Kirwan, Pym & Sizing Pottsie to name a few.

As I’m still in Cheltenham mode, I’ve thrown my free Skybet fiver on a Canadian:
Altior - 6/4 Champion Chase
Samcro - 4/1 JLT
On The Blind Side - 16/1 RSA
Might Bite - 6/1 Gold Cup
Monalee - 16/1 Ryanair
Just under 8k when they all romp inLast edited by Middle_Of_March; 19 March 2018, 03:47 PM.
