Where will they go ?

Granted not Hendo’s usual route but we are talking about an unusual horse and if the 2025 Gold Cup is the target then the most logical stepping stone would be the Turners

IEP will be CHurdle bound imo after he bolts up at Punchestown. Also think it’s likely State Man has another go

No need to doubt Barry when he says MN will be trained for the Arkle

Do you think WPM would keep both Impaire & Stateman over hurdles? Can’t see that happening with 2 of his best shown at the festival

….Seem to recall Mullins suggesting this was a ‘year too early’ for Vauban’s main chance at the CH.

Does Vauban have the pace for Champ Hurdle? Could they look to step him up in trip?

He's also still adamant that Facile Vega is a 2 miler, and I doubt he'll give up on (over) rating him either. Can see FV being targeted at the Champion Hurdle as well.

Although he's got about five options for every race again hasn't he, so difficult to know how they impact on each other.

If IEP was mine though he'd be targeting the Champion Hurdle for sure.

Michael Buckley on The Hill......

"No decision has been made about what he’ll do in the future but if he's as proficient at jumping fences as he is hurdles, then my ambition would be to equal what Dawn Run did and try to win a Gold Cup.
"There’s an attraction for me, on the one hand, to move on to chasing and trying to do a Dawn Run but there’s another attraction in trying to win another Champion Hurdle – that would be Nicky’s tenth."

After Tuesday's race Constitution Hill's jockey Nico De Boinville said he wouldn't want him 'pigeon-holed' as a hurdler and that would indicate a switch to novice chasing next season is likely.

He suffers from what so many 5yo non novices do, and that's a lack of targets.
There's been a huge focus on enhancing the mares programme (rightly or wrongly) but we still get almost a forgotten generation of horses who have nowhere to go after their Triumph hurdle season.
Why there isn't a 5yo championship final somewhere (Aintree, Sandown or even Fairyhouse/Punchestown) I have no idea, talented horses like Vauban end up in races they can't be competitive in instead of targeting a winnable race/series.
Pied Piper went close in the County off 154, but he needed to be beaten out of sight by State Man a couple of times to have not been given a mark higher than that.
So so hard for these horses...

Facile Vega surely targetted at the Arkle as well until beaten at 2m over fences?

Same with Marine Nationale. Can see those two re-opposing for sure.

The lay off worked for MN this year too, so maybe misses the DRF?

Not checked the prices (I'm going to guess 8/1 and 10/1) - .... checked, was close ish, 5/1 and 10/1 ..... Skinny :disillusionment:

Trouble is..............The Hill !

Impaire received the “special” tag didn’t he and Willie usually likes to give his ‘special’ horses every chance of fulfilling their promise over hurdles. He has also already suggested SM stays over hurdles by saying something along the lines of, it’s easier to keep them sound over hurdles… we’re all guessing aren’t we but my take would be that they both stay over hurdles unless maybe they get beat at Punchestown?

Impaire looks a big chasing type to me

Made for a fence and hopefully that is where he goes

Has the perfect blend of speed and stamina for the turners and could develop into a gold cup contender over time

Agree that he looks every inch a Chaser. Willie has State Man for the Champion Hurdle and he may not have stopped improving. He'll not throw both of them at the race. Id think he'll go Arkle though IF C Hill doesn't.

I think Constitution Hill will end up in the Arkle next year, then stepping up at Aintree to 2m4f. This would then pave the way for a Gold Cup shot the following season as an open chaser.

I agree as racing fans, if he takes to fences as well as we think, then the prospect of him going Champion Chase would be fantastic. At the end of the day though it doesn’t really change anything re having a shot at the Gold Cup, as that will more than likely be 2025 regardless.

In terms of superstardom, has there ever been a horse win the big 3 championship races? That may tempt them, it’ll possibly depend on how good Energumene and El Fab look next season.

I do hope he goes chasing and personally think he will. He'll probably take the same route as Sprinter and Altior in their Novice seasons in that his final prep will be the Game Spirit. It's at that point that things may change. Whilst the aforementioned went Arkle, C Hill could go Champion Chase depending on what position El Fabiolo and Energumene are in.

In other words, as at February 2024 we will still not know which way he goes.

Of course, he may not take to fences at all in which case he'd revert back to winning another Churdle which will add to the pain for us AP punters.

Enjoy the ride though !!

If I owned him and he'd just won the game spirit and had looked fine over fences. But the Champion Chase looked hot.
I'd run in the Champion Hurdle.
Fuck novice company.
He's no novice.

Agree and I think Mr Buckley will agree too. El Fabiolo is just coming out of Novice company and Energumene has had everything fall his way the last two years with the weather and the race falling apart It's there on a plate for The Hill IMO. Go for it. Mr B will regret it if they don't. Hendo will try and persuade him to go the easy route but Michael needs to stand firm.

How many horses have won a Champion Hurdle and Champion Chase?

Is it any?
Have any tried?

I would love to see that.

Look up a horse called flyingblot kev, never won both but won the champion chase and ran in the champion hurdle the day after and finished 3rd

Certainly none in my time but then none have tried. That's why he should go for it. He's certainly good enough. I see no reason at all why he wouldn't jump a fence and he's just got too much pace and power for the likes of Energumene and El Fabiolo. He'd murder them.

I don't see them doing a Coneygree with him though as taking on GDC as a Novice might just be a step too far.......even for The Hill !!
