….Eoghain Ward handpicks 12 horses that could hit the headlines under rules in the 2026/27 season.

No fewer than 17 Grade 1 races were won by horses that had begun their careers between the flags in Ireland, further underlining the significant role that the point-to-point sphere continues to play in feeding talent into the wider National Hunt landscape.

That production line continues, and last season’s action in the pointing fields once again unearthed a host of exciting young prospects who caught the eye with impressive performances between the flags.

With many of those now set to embark on the next chapter of their careers, here are 12 exciting youngsters yet to appear under Rules who are well worth adding to your At The Races Tracker for the season ahead.

Interestingly, none of the graded novice hurdles or novice chases at Cheltenham were won by horses who had been Point To Pointing. The two handicap novice chases were won by horses who had been beaten in 4yo maidens at Monksgrange. To carry this on further. Only two graded races at the Festival were won by horses who had began in P2P, the Mourne Rambler in the Bumper, who had been 2nd in a Portrush 4yo maiden, and White Noise in the Mares Novice, who was also 2nd in a Ballinaboola maiden. Maybe it is not the winners we need to be looking at so much!

Mourne Crystal popping up everywhere. He's the early talking horse for sure.

Plenty of love for Down Jones Road as well.

Looking forward to seeing when/where they start out.

Good to see both being mentioned.

I'm invested in both. DJR Nicky's Supreme horse, at this early stage for me, if I had to pick one.

Mourne Crystal I'm more undecided on target as of yet, backed only for Turners so far.

I really fancy feel gut. If we have quick ground for a while and delayed debits, he’ll have a real advantage in terms of experience

Wonder if Down Jones Road will just run in a couple Junior hurdles and keep him as a novice hurdler for next season ?
He is only a 4 yo atm.

Casey.....

I rode Gaelic Warrior out this week myself. He is well in himself. He will probably start in the John Durkan and hopefully he gets a smooth run through the season, and keeps sound. That is half the battle - keeping them sound and healthy- and if you can do that, then you have a fighting chance.
Last year, obviously Gaelic Warrior went across (for the King George) and was unlucky. I don’t know if the plan is the same this year. All those horses tend to start in the John Durkan, and we see how they go from there and make a plan. The likes of Gaelic Warrior, Fact to File and Kitzbuhel, who won at Kempton last year and then at Cheltenham, will have entries, then we will see how they progress.

….TV Tipster Tom Collins highlights him;

‘He’s got a right turn of foot’ - that’s what Nico de Boinville said after Feel Gut’s UK debut at Warwick in mid-January. It’s difficult to argue with that assessment given he clocked a top speed of 34.84mph (fastest in the race) and had a finishing speed percentage of 108.14%. Natural speed doesn’t quite equal talent, but it goes a long way towards it.

He was initially cut into 12/1 for last season’s Triumph Hurdle, but he was re-routed away from the Festival with a patient plan put in place instead. Representing Nicky Henderson and the Donnelly’s while boasting a rather large reputation, Feel Gut’s future is almost set in stone with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle glowing like a piece of treasure in the distance.

It is a big step up from a Warwick junior hurdle to winning at the Cheltenham Festival, however, so his current ante-post price of 14/1 looks on the skinny side for all that he could be a quarter of that come March.

The manner in which he cleared the last hurdle back in January may have given a clue to his long-term future as he seems to have plenty of scope to eventually jump a fence. It wouldn’t be a surprise to watch him progress throughout this season and perhaps score at Grade 1 level over the smaller obstacles, but he looks a bona fide Arkle candidate once he eventually exits the hurdling ranks.

Tom’s verdict: I felt the need to include a novice hurdler in this list and Feel Gut has the right profile to be singled out. It will be interesting to see how he performs when he returns to the track and also what assignments Henderson gives him from November to February. At this stage he’s an unfurnished machine and I believe anything he does this season will be improved upon next campaign.’

"Feel Gut has the right profile".

A second season Novices who won a Hurdle race in his first season novice hurdling. I'd call that a new profile...

Fuck feel gut

Also
“Anything he does this season will be improved upon next campaign”

Is classic expectation and reputation management. And completely unnecessary

Have absolutely no idea why feel gut is such a short price.

Could be anything of course, like all of them, but he's done absolutely nothing. Beaten 5l by macho man in france, who hasn't exactly given the form a huge boost, and then wins an academy hurdle race against nothing.

He's the type I can easily see being turned over on his first run of the season at short odds.

He's the rightful favourite as a 2nd season novice who has already won a race and from top connections. It's worked out ok, the 3rd won on next start and 5th has won 3 handicap since, though arguably his 2nd to Macho Man is arguably stronger on paper (RPR is 2lb higher for the French run). Using that Pride of Kildare run as a guide then I'd be interested on what the word is behind Forty Fifty. Went off fav for the race when trained by George & Zetterholm, staying on well for 4th. Subsequently sold and sent to Mullins, he ran him just once, in the Triumph where a creditable 6th, outpaced and running on. He only has 2 1/4 lengths to find with Feel Gut on PoK form though he shapes as a stayer and may be one for the AB as another 2nd season novice. Just looking at the AB betting he is 40/1. Maybe a nice PoK related double?
