Now the weights out, we can begin to speculate on the jockeys.

Who does Jonjo jr ride? The Cromwell horse or Palmers Hill for his Dad?

Who rides Column of Fire?

and best of Irish

From Doneraile, County Cork, Darragh was 18 years of age when he rode his first winner on the Enda Bolger-trained William Du Berlais at Killarney in July, 2018. His career was well and truly up and running when partnered the same horse to win again just five days later at Tipperary.
Another owned by JP McManus, Ballyoisin, gave Darragh notable early success when winning the €100,000 Ladbrokes Ireland Listowel Handicap Hurdle at the Listowel festival in September of the same year.
Darragh rode his 60th winner and rode out his claim when landing the Cork Grand National on the Michael Hourigan trained The Gatechecker in early November, 2019.

Conor McNamara will also be in demand.

Great minds Mayo was on this at 6am :highly_amused:

Don’t know if it’s me but our sport is in great hands with the new breed of jocks , some highly talented indeed .

Evolution at its best :encouragement:

Column of fire an obvious danger here but does anyone else think Gordy has been at it with Mengli Kahn? I’m sure he’s happy with the mark of 145..

Or far more likely he is a flat bred who was never going to last. 12 races in a row never better than third. Trainer will do well to win any race with him.

So many of those races were G1s with a few top level handicaps throw in.
It's been many years since I considered recent form going into a top handicap, the very nature of the race means the worse you run the better off you are.
His flat breeding may well be an issue of course but I wouldn't run away with the idea that the horse have been 'all out' in his recent outings...

Hopefully we will find out how deep last years JLT was before Mengli Khan runs. I can see this being the race for him given connections.

JP will have Jonjo and Darragh O'Keefe on two of his and I would have these two in the Codd/DOC mould - i.e. worth at least 3lbs. Rathhill is probably too low to get in.

Blimey KB!
One year ago the horse runs to within 10L of this years Champ chase J fav, and 7L of a horse that spent a lot of the year fav for the gold cup off level weights - beating real steel, kildisart, vindication in the process. He’s here off 145 and you included that run in the ‘negative’ column!
Fair enough - the trainer would do well to win any race with him but that’s kinda his thing ;)

I think it's already proved to be a top class renewal Boss.
Although LIT and Defo have gone down different routes they've proved themselves to be proper G1 horses and the horse half the straight back (Capeland) won a competitive handicap (would have been two !) and is now 153.

As far as I am aware even the trainer has accepted the horse is a dog. I am happy to be in the 'gone' camp and will happily doff the cap if the trainer performs a miracle.

It already looks good - I liked Denmansacres bet on related thread

Can you define miracle please?

Column Of Fire (current 8/1 2nd fav)
Winning the Martin Pipe... would need a MIRACLE?

:highly_amused: You're too funny to get annoyed at.

[WE] do need some balance though, SOMEBODY has to cheer if CoF gets beat!

He's talking about Mengli Khan I think.

:applause: Aaaah.

I take it back, apologies KB.

Not that you'll have been offended.

Ive gone against the plan of NRNB for this one, but I wanted the extra 8 points available with only one bookie (Uni), he wont miss the cut, and his trainer said on his blog this week that he is targeted at the Martin Pipe after working well, and Chester Williams (18% strike rate this year) is engaged to ride him.

Espoir De Romay 33/1 Martin Pipe Conditional Hurdle

Looking at his background, he is trained by Kim Bailey, one run a year ago over hurdles, a third place behind Jatiluwah.

The trainer is in great form this season and has good chances in other handicaps (Vinndication, Imperial Aura, Newtide), and this one has gone under the radar, which is great for current prices.

The horses started the season in November in a 2M4F Warwick Novice Hurdle (Good to Soft) and he beat West Cork (now rated 139) by 3&1/2 lengths in second, and Kalookie (now rated 143) back in 4th beaten 18&1/2 lengths.

EDR jumped big for the first two hurdles then he got very slick over them, and ended up a ready winner.

Form since beaten by EDR at Warwick in November

West Cork 112 (including beat Mister Coffey by 7 lengths, and 2nd to Highway One-O-Two in the Grade 2 Dovecote last weekend)
Hometown Boy 312 (including a 12-length win, and a second beaten 3&1/2 lengths by McFabulous, giving the winner 6lbs!!)
Kalookie 112 (including two 17-length wins, and then a 2nd beaten 4 lengths in a Grade 2 by Ramses De Teille two weeks ago, 3rd was beaten over 20 lengths further back)
-------------------------------------------------------------
Three weeks later he ran on Heavy Ground over 2M6F at Newcastle, with a 5lb penalty for his win, and he ran a beautiful race, hurdling slickly, and even at the last he seemed likely to prevail from two challenges, before tying up late, on the heavy ground over the extended distance, to be beaten a length into third.

The trainer has since intimated in his blog that the horse needs time between races, and he gave him two months off before his next run on 30th January over 2M4F at Wincanton (Soft) in a Conditionals handicap Hurdle carrying 12st top-weight and a rating of 132, and he travelled well, hurdled wonderfully, and cleared away after the last, to bolt up by 6&1/2 lengths.

He got a rise of 11lbs to 143, which was reduced by 1lb to 142 recently, and the trainer gave him the time he thinks the horse needs between races before deciding to put him in one (conditionals) handicap, having had a conditional ride him in all three races this season.

His last piece of work seems to have convinced the trainer that the time between races has brought him back to being ready for run, and he has engaged his jockey choice for the Martin Pipe.

The videos of his three runs show how quick he gets across hurdles, his trainer is in form, and his only defeat was narrow, with a reason given as running back too quickly after his seasonal debut. I like this as it shows the trainer, even though beaten just a length, seemed to believe he was better than that, and altered his time between races accordingly.

He will do for me, and 25/1 NRNB is also available, which I may top up on too.

Clearly that Warwick race looks like a decent bit of form. Just not sure he has taken the step forward that those in behind might have done. West Cork, who is a keen sort, has improved for being dropped back in trip and Kalooki is probably a different horse now to the one that was beaten at Warwick.

The stable like to have a pop at one so a little surprised he is 33/1 if they are keen.

Had it pointed out to me this morning, the price difference between Floueur with PP and 365.

PP are 12/1
365 are 33/1

Others have made a case for this horse already so it's nothing original, but that price difference is enough to get me to chance it.

Something has to come 2nd to Column Of Fire, right? :highly_amused:

Flash The Steel was mentioned early doors by someone after Skelton mentioned him on the Opening Show. As I always like to keep an eye on big Dan in the handicaps, I went back to check him out as he’s not run since. The form of his opening handicap victory is crazy and it’s only a lack of run that has prevented a shorter price. I‘ve got him in the book now.

And he won the race as he liked. The way he made his way through the field down the back straight was impressive. I’m forgiving him the next run over too far on bad ground.

Yeah just watched it back.

I haven't put enough time into this race yet, after picking a very early selection I've probably not given the race the time it deserves.

He's straight onto the shortlist. Any comments about his target? (By shortlist, I mean I've now added him!)
