Chuffed for all you big winners on samcro. It’s really hit me how much course form is essential when looking for winners.
 
Just seen the race. Bawling my eyes out here lads, what a bloody horse and what a bloody race. I've the shakes.

Just watched it back. What a race. Love all the first 3 for different reasons. Melon gave a great battle. Thought he’d got it at first glance but fair play to Samcro!
 
I was head in hands there. Melon was a pig AP because I had backed him for the Arkle, didn't think he had as chance in this but delighted Samcro won
 
I dont know any of you, but i know someone had him for alot of cheese and im buzzing for you..fair play!

Just calmed down ......... Samcro has given me my biggest pickup I’ve ever had. Had him in many doubles and trebles. Wasn’t a comfortable few minutes waiting for the photo finish !!!! Happy now though !!!!
 
What a horse Melon is though

Let him do what he wants all year but turns up when it matters most at Cheltenham. Can’t knock the horse what so ever

I am glad he was beaten, for selfish reasons and that was a scary few minutes at the finish

After O'Leary's ridiculous comments in the past, samcro was only 1 of two winners for GHS this fez.
 
Samcro is some horse. Some may think he has a soft heart, but he is rock solid. Can't wait to see what he does next year Unreal.

What a belting race to kick off Day 3. No matter which of the first three won, it would have been great. Three festival icons?


Taking money out of it, I remember the flutter when the commentator shouts that Faugheen is coming! I think there are a few combining factors that lead to him not being closer (and he didn't need to be much closer).... firstly, 3 out he jumps level with Samcro, nods on landing and loses that position and is then a length behind him and tucked in against the rail. At 2nd last he's still that length behind but out in the clear... and then get switched inside. By the time they jump he's still that 1 length behind when they land after the last... the door then closes against the rail as Melon and Samcro go towards it, so he switches back outside and looks 2L behind. At the line, he's 1L behind.
I don't blame the jockey for that, I guess he switched inside hoping the horse would take him up in the inside of Melon before the last so he had the rail up the run in. The most frustrating part is that if he hadn't switched, he may not have ended up 1L closer and involved in the photo. I don't blame the jockey though, but I'd slightly upgrade Faugheen's performance. A very creditable 3rd. Where he runs next year? If at all? No idea, not a horse I'll ever back ante post without NRNB but an absolutely magnificent horse that I'll remember fondly for the rest of my life.

Melon comes out with so much credit too. For a horse that has won only 4 of 22 starts (18%) he is undoubtebly quite frustrating but can you really knock his attitude? I don't think so, he's a nose and a neck away from being a Champion Hurdle winner and a Novice Chase winner. Incredible really. His Cheltenham record is excellent (in my opinion, I know some only class wins as good runs but I don't look at it that way). What he will do next year? I really wouldn't like to guess either. I know a couple have suggested a Gold Cup big - not unfeasible at all - Ryanair makes the most sense and he's placed in 2x Champion Hurdles so he's not exactly a no-hoper at that distance. He's only 10/1 any race.... I'd want 20/1 as he'd have to be an each way bet, and although you can get 20/1+ for all 3 targets, I don't want to play it that way with him at the moment. He's not a horse I expect to string together a line of 1's either so his price will hopefully hold deep into the season towards NRNB time.

Samcro - I don't think there has been a more talked about horse on the forum since I've been on here. The excitement about him from his P2P, through to his bumpers, novice hurdle campaign, the failed Champion Hurdle season, and 'bouncing back' all culminating in this win. He's rightfully near the top of the Ryanair market next year. Certainly not out of the equation that he'd be tested as a staying chaser to see if he's a Gold Cup horse.

Having now seen all of the Novice Chases back, I feel I've got to commit to which was the best but I'm trying not to do that :highly_amused: If I had to, I'd say the RSA was the strongest of the lot (in terms of front 3). Therefore at the moment, I'd have Allaho beating Melon, Samcro and Faugheen in a Ryanair... I'd have Champ and Minella Indo beating and of them that stepped up too. I'd take Samcro to be better than Fakir D'Oudaries over the intermediate trip too, so the Arke would be 3rd.

My opinion on those will probably change (and I'm allowed to change it) but that's how I'd read the races right now... therefore, having not been tempted to back any of the RSA horses yet, I won't back any of these. Ironically, I have backed Put The Kettle On from the 'weakest' of the three, but I think the 2 mile chase division is there for the taking, whereas the further distances have too much depth.
 
Well said with faugheen im taking nothing away from samcro but faugheen was unlucky in the last 2 fences and in between
 
I’ve watched the race about 20 times and still think melon has won every time I see it! Some round of jumping from samcro apart from fluffing the second last he looks a natural, would love to see him in the King George and go from there
 
I've seen a lot of people describing this race as a 'great battle', was it not just a case of samcro idling every time he went a head infront. For a horse that doesn't win a lot I do agree that melon doesnt actually lack a battling mentality, he's just getting beat by better horses and I would be in the camp that would be excited to see him bowl along out in front over 3m and see how he goes. But as for samcro I think there is a lot left in the tank that he isn't giving, this was his first run however since apparently they found out he was a 'silent choker' and rectified the problem so maybe there could be more to come from him if he learns over time that he can now give his all withouut feeling discomfort, similar to horses who take some time to get back to normal after having burst blood vessels healed

A mate of mine was backing Samcro on betfair as they went over the line, I'm sure he was getting 3/1 and was backing Samcro right down to 1.8 so clearly the majority thought Melon has won.
I was by the third last and no mobile service, I found out Samcro had won about 5 mins after the rest of the world....
