Another benefit might be the trainers championship looks beyond Willie imo - he's 660k further behind Dan following Cheltenham vs last year and I don't think he will be able to make it up, even matching last years GN. Should mean less of the Mullins battalion coming over for the meeting

Do they count towards the handicaps?

I actually think it's a bit of a joke they are even a thing, and that would only confirm my thoughts.
I think so. There was nothing in the rules specifically excluding them from what I could see.

From the BHA (see last bullet):

  • A win in a Junior NH Hurdle race will not rule out a horse from running in regular novice races in the following season.
  • Horses are permitted to run in other Juvenile and Novices’ events during the same season, but please note - wins outside these Junior NH Hurdles will be treated as normal in terms of novice status. That is to say, a horse winning in any hurdle race other than one of these events will not be a novice for the following season.
  • Any wins will result in loss of maiden status in all future hurdle races.
  • Runs in these races will be subject to assessment by the BHA handicapper and count towards qualification for handicap races.

That's interesting. So Feel Gut, for example, will be a novice next year, but won't be able to compete in a maiden. So he might have to start in the Persian War or something similar.

Irish Academy Hurdles are treated the same (in the UK) - see Minella Yoga who qualified for a mark after running in an Academy Hurdle and two regular novice/juvenile hurdles.

Does anyone know what it means when a horse was “struck into” for context, Casey mentioned that is why Narciso missed last week but said he should be fine for the spring...

It’s where one hoof strikes another leg and cuts. I think it also refers to where one horse strikes into another eg during a race.

When the rear leg hits the front leg while galloping, can cut through their own tendons if its done badly enough, usually just results in deep cuts.

The racing media seems to have moved on swiftly after Thursday and the Fact to File withdrawal, not helped by Gaelic’s superb subsequent performance.

I do wonder if Mullins and McManus are really a match made in heaven. With everyone clearly stating that it’s Willie’s decisions over owners on where to go to, this policy is set aside for the McManus team.

It’s common for that stable to be steaming into one just before the off, something which was very noticeable with the support for It Etait Temps at the expense of Majborough.

Was the Fact to File withdrawal an excuse to make it easier for Jonbon? Then Willie’s rant about the ground though he didn’t pull any other horse.

Then after winning on the outsider in the Triumph, when Patrick had Alice Plunkett shove the microphone up at him immediately post-race, he was very animated about the stress Willie is under and tellingly mentioned something along the lines of people telling him, Willie that is, all season, where the horses should be going. What was all that about?

OK, it could just be that everything with Fact to File wasn’t 100% coming into the race. He had a hard enough race at the DRF, but Willie’s on record that he’s one of his best and they always saw him as a Gold Cup horse. He was the horse where they went straight from bumpers to chases.

Am I talking rubbish? Not pocket talking either. I had a small win bet on Heart Wood from a few weeks back.
I see Spectre has made a valuable contribution this morning on X. He's replying to Willie's comments published last night on the Sporting Life site. Here are those.

'The course was presented well but maybe a little quicker than a few people might have wanted in an ideal world. The rain that was expected possibly didn’t quite arrive and some of my owners might have preferred a bit more rain towards the end of the week, which obviously wasn’t anyone's fault.'

I still think they are both big enough not to need each other, if the JP horses have to be specifically managed, around other horses. I 100% agree with Paul's take on it.

Helnwein, who missed out getting into the County, runs tomorrow at Newbury 3pm. Hopefully the Alexei, Wilful and Hot Fuss form will be franked again and he'll get some small consolation.

A few horses that never made the cuts at Cheltenham out on Saturday
Munsif 1.55 Navan
Khrisma 2.10 Kelso
Heltenham 2.25 Newbury

Got to be a Patent for me 🤞

Would Byrnes waste Munsif’s mark on a low value maiden ?
If that’s his plan then it can only be that he knows the horse is considerably better than 121/126, though I’d be surprised if he isn’t looking at a bigger pot…

He's at a small yard for flat horses but a horse running at Kempton on Wednesday takes my eye.

Constitution Hill is set to run in the 7:30 at Kempton on Wednesday. Bolted up on debut, but early price is 2/7 doesn't appeal much!

Maybe some super boosts

One for the tracker....

Could be plotting him for a handicap later down the line...

Completely random thought but was thinking about the impact that the change in courses has when races are moved to different days when they change the schedule. For example Wodhooh looked like she outstayed JDG in the Mares and I wonder whether the result might have been different if it had remained on the Old Course. Also, wonder how it will affect trends for races - e.g. the Plate.

It led me to thinking about the championship races as a whole and the anomaly that the Brown Advisory is run on the Old Course. The 2miler pathway is Supreme - Champion Hurdle - Arkle - Champion Chase. All races run on the speed favouring Old Course which makes sense. The 3m pathway is Spa - Stayers - Brown Adv - Gold Cup and three of these are run on the more stamina testing New Course which is logical but the Brown Advisory is not. I guess it is because in the "old" days (pre Spa hurdle) what are now the Turners and Brown Advisory were both sponsored for a long time by RSA and hence were on the same day. I wonder why they don't move the Browns to Thursday/Friday

Well done to Paul, didn’t notice Jeffreys Cross was running today.

I've got a few quid in my 365 account burning a hole in my pocket so before I piss it away on football bets I scoured the 2027 AntePost markets to get me back in the game for Cheltenham 2027 and came up with the following. Was not looking for short priced selections at this stage of the game. Looking for a bit of value. I particularly like Golden Ace and Inothewayurthinking for next year. Surely I'll get my money back plus a bit. Whadya think ?

(1) Idaho Sun (Arkle) @ 50/1
(2) Act Of Innocence (BANC) @ 16/1
(3) Golden Ace (Mares Hurdle) @ 25/1
(4) The New Lion (Stayers) @ 10/1
(5) Kitzbuhel (Ryanair) @ 14/1
(6) Inothewayurthinkin (Gold Cup) @ 25/1

Interesting run from gambino in the first at Newbury today, travelled nicely and was given a really easy time of things.
