Cheltenham Festival Handicap Qualification For Novices 2025

Owners and Trainers are reminded that paragraph 15
of the Weights and Handicapping Code has been modified for the majority of handicaps at the Cheltenham Festival and novices are required to have the minimum number of runs by February 23[SUP]rd[/SUP], 2025 (inclusive) as outlined below:

….2026;​

January 6: major chases​

The road to the 2026 Cheltenham Festival properly kicks off on Tuesday when entries are made for the Boodles Gold Cup, BetMGM Queen Mother Champion Chaseand the Ryanair Chase.

January 13: major hurdles​

By noon on January 13, entries will be made for the Unibet Champion Hurdle, Paddy Power Stayers' Hurdle, and the Close Brothers Mares' Hurdle.

January 20: novice races​

Entries are made for the Arkle Novices' Chase, Supreme Novices' Hurdle, Brown Advisory Novices' Chase, Turners Novices' Hurdle, Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdleand JCB Triumph Hurdle are made by noon on January 20.

February 17: handicaps​

Entries for all 12 handicaps across the four days must be made by midday on February 17, with no option for scratchings or supplementary entries. Expect horses to appear in multiple races before connections decide on their final targets closer to the festival. The weights for each handicap will be published one week later on February 24, with any horse to win a race from February 22 onwards to carry a 5lb penalty (although such a penalty cannot increase a horse's weight above 12st).

Horses must have run at least four times over fences to qualify for a non-novice handicap chase (three times for novice races) and five times over hurdles to qualify for non-novice handicap hurdles (three times for the juvenile contest).

The rest​

There are four other races at Cheltenham with different entry dates. On February 10, entries will be made for the Ryanair Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle and the Mrs Paddy Power Mares’ Chase, while on February 24 entries will be made for the Weatherbys Champion Bumper and the Hunters’ Chase.
