Day 5 - Saturday - Royal Ascot 2020

Haha, I am kidding .... wouldn't have picked it in 20 attempts.

Over 500 people did in the ITV7, must be some very happy punters out there!

Fiver matched at 590 on the exchange as well

Come on Frankie

How brilliant is Frankie! He's done Jim Crowley for top jockey whom I had a few quid on at 33s for fun! Oh well.

That was the race of the week for me.

Always time for one more twist in these markets. Backing Crowley to win this.

Two cracking races in a row. PINATUBO should drop in trip imo and what a race the DJ was. Sceptical just ran out of it after shaping like the winner. Did that run 12 days ago take a bit out of him or does he want a stiff 5f or easy 6f?? He’s a proper horse whatever and I’ll be keeping him on side. Dream of dreams blasted home again, but all too late.

Right, day 5 bets all done but I'm sure they'll be some chopping and changing...

I love the big handicaps and have had to add some high drawn horses. I'm hoping some of the Wokingham horses will shorten in price and depending on if the bias continues, I will look to lay off a couple in each race. These big sprints are normally contested by the same horses who seem to take it in turns to win so I've got all the main ones that I like. I can't believe I already have 6 in the Wokingham and that doesn't include my cliff horse, Hey Jonesy!

My cliff horse and I didn't back it - idiot!!!!:mad-new:

....with one race to go, I can’t remember enjoying a Royal Ascot so much. Great idea to open a flat racing forum and Kev might have started something with the Royal Ascot thread.

As always, great company and great insight on FJ.

Yup - great week and lovely to have this forum to peruse!

Agreed! Great addition!

Couldn't agree more. My first big festival on here and I've really enjoyed it. Hope we all had a few winners and made a few quid.

Well done all. It's been good craic on here and hopefully plenty have made a few quid.

A really enjoyable week.

No surprise at a small loss today. The only disappointment was the 5 non runners in the last race. Did the reserves have to come out yesterday? Somewhat defeats the object. Other than that it was nice to watch the races with no financial interest - it will be at least 13 races I have left alone this week.

Tomorrow is slightly better than today but not a lot, so even a small profit would be good.

12.40 Leave alone. Nothing solid enough at a decent price.

1.15 & 1.50 At the start of the week I had noted down four 2yo's - More Beautiful, Sacred, Admiral Nelson and Qaader. Unfortunately, they take each other on. I have sided with Sacred EW but couldn't split the other two so both Admiral Nelson and Qaader (Win). I see Admiral Nelson as a long term sprinter so I was surprised they didn't go Norfolk. Qaader should have a stamina edge. I have taken the price for the Guineas. Even if he gets beat tomorrow he should progress as he steps up in trip. At the moment Battleground is a silly price.

2.25 I don't think the bar is set very high amongst the fillies so was very happy with 9/1 Fooraat until they pulled her out.

3.00 I think it is a similar situation with the colts so went with Palace Pier EW. Gosden sending out distress signals before the race but wasn't he doing similar earlier in the weak?

3.35 A similar race to the Commonwealth Cup, competitive but no stars. It could be we have seen the best sprinter and miler running in handicaps this week.

4.10 Bit concerned they have reached for the Doyler and leaving aside the fact he never wins Summerghand EW looks the most solid option.

4.40 I know the race has its history but it really is a dreadful end to a great meeting.

I know the extra races were intended as a one off but I think they have worked well and should be repeated. I heard Jim McGrath briefly talking about it but didn't understand any of his reasons why it couldn't happen. Surely the only question is did the races enhance the meeting?

A small profit that should have been a fair bit more. Sacred gets beat by a Ward 2yo coming from behind (how often has that happened?); Qaader gets beat by one of longest price winners in Royal Ascot history and to cap it all Doyle throws away the Wokingham. Hey Jonesy about the only horse that has clung on all week.

A winning week after a poor run is good but frustrating it wasn't better.

Summary

Wins

Hukum 16/1
Khaloosy 14/1
Sir Busker 12/1
Palace Pier 5/1
Battleground 4/1
Frankly Darling 33/20

All were impressive enough but although the St James's Palace was the best race of the meeting I thought Khaloosy put in the most eyecatching performance. He won by 4.5 but I think he was value for 6 or 7 lengths.

Places

Liberty Beach 3rd 10/1
HMS President 4th 14/1
Waliyak 2nd 12/1
Defoe 3rd 8/1
Sacred 2nd 11/2
Summerghand 2nd 16/1

Of those I have a feeling that Waliyak would have won had she had something to race with and Doyle threw away the Wokingham.

Biggest disappointments were Duke Of Hazzard and King Leonidas. Duke Of Hazzard wanted quicker ground but he shouldn't have dropped away that quickly. The market told a story 14/1-9/1-25/1. Of course it is always frustrating when a stable goes on to land big priced compensation. A similar thing happened with Charlie Fellowes - twice. As for King Leonidas he was struggling much too early for the class rise to be an excuse.

Roll on next year.

I was going to give up on Wednesday evening. Finished +222 points. If summerghand had got up that wouldve been +500. It's been such a fun week on here as ever cheers to everyone who shares their insight. This is *the* place for horse racing fans

Well done Rob - superb turn around. I thought Summerghand had got up on the line at the time.

I could have smashed the TV at times but it was a thoroughly enjoyable week.

Personal highlights were Mountain Angel skipping his way up the rail. The Lir Jet running through the line (I told everyone at work to back him) and Palace Pier looking all class.

I got plenty badly wrong but my biggest disappointment was Bless Him not running on Tuesday. Alan King should stick to the flat:devilish:
