Cross Country Chase 2018

Hopefully COC gets a nice run in Feb. Fingers crossed

Cause Of Causes currently sitting with zero prep runs and no future entries is a bit of a worry for me, Josies Orders on the other hand has had a Cheltenham Festival prep similar to COC last season, in having 4 races to date, OK, the races he has contested are different, but I am sitting here thinking that the late COC gamble last season will be the same for Josies Orders this season!

I have JO backed, but not as much as COC!

It's the nagging feeling that Tiger Roll will end up as the gamble that worries me!

CoC is still entered in the last race at Leopardstown on Sunday, no?

He’s still entered next week at Leopardstown, and has the entry for the cross country. Gordon has said he’s in good form at home. Like a lot of people have said on here I don’t think having a few prep runs really matters that much now as a lot of the same work can be done at home.

While i'm in heavy on CoC and its niggling in the back of my mind, I think the national would of been a hard race for him so theyre just minding him a bit more this season

He's a green and gold horse so you can just listen to what Frank Berry says and assume the opposite to be true.

I keep stopping myself getting sucked in by the Tiger Roll chat.... or any other horse, because EVERY time I look at the market, I think CoC is still the best value compared to the others.

There is literally no other horse in training I'd rather have running up the Cheltenham hill. Tiger Roll would actually be quite high on that list, but CoC has been there and done it, Tiger Roll at the moment has just had 1 poor run over the fences, and too much is being made of the comparison to CoC because it is with Elliott?

Cause of Causes since 2013 wins are in: January, March, March, March (and 2014 was his 2nd in March in the Kim Muir)
Tiger Roll in the same period wins are in: November, March, October, May, June, October, March

Tiger Roll is a cracking horse, but he's not a spring festival specialist like CoC :devilish:

Nina really should have won on CoC in the Kim Muir too. His festival record takes believing and I share your confidence Kev (although I have backed Tiger Roll too).

He might not be a spring festival specialist...but Tiger Roll has won at Cheltenham twice at the festival. There aren't too many horses in training that can say that.

CoC hasn't been seen and is 3/1 (NRNB)...Tiger Roll is 10/1...

Personally I'm covering both.

I haven't backed tiger roll but It was a good run off that weight held right up at the back and not asked for a great deal. I can see why people are backing him.
This is not a race id want to go big or rely on. Even if you jump well yourself its very easy to unseat rider or get hampered by others at crucial stages.

10/1, 1/4 the odds, BOG and NRNB - it does make sense now I completely agree...

My sticking point is that I was backing Cause of Causes at 10/1 and 9/1, and Tiger Roll isn't as good a bet as that was... I'd be giving money back, unless I went each way... and there is no guarentee Tiger Roll actually will do a CoC and perform well on his next attempt?

Think we're in the same boat Kev. I took the tasty prices on offer for COC months back and was confident he wouldnt be beat at Cheltenham in March. I had no plans to back anything else in this race such was my confidence but now am wondering whether to have a cover bet on TR

I chucked £50 on CoC @ 7/1, and that's me done.

I've got too much work on, to tie myself up in knots over every race :highly_amused:

If I were on COC I would definitely cover with Tiger Roll @ 10/1. I remember watching COC running in the XC trial at the January meeting 2017 and finishing 5/10. Codd dropped him out the back and it was an obvious schooling session with no real intention of winning the race (it was so obvious I was surprised it attracted as little attention as it did). It clearly worked and he won in March. Having watched Tiger Roll's race in December back (where he finished 5/9) it was clear that Elliot and Donoghue employed the exact same tactics. Held up at the rear and never really asked to get involved. Tiger Roll is 2/3 at Festivals and had he won in December he would not be 10/1, so my suggestion to COC backers is take advantage of what looks like a clever tactful ride and cover whilst the price is still double figures.

Elliott's three-time Cheltenham Festival winner Cause Of Causes heads 39 possibles for the Chanelle Pharma Handicap Chase

Still in :)

Just been reading over my post analysis notes from 2017 festival... makes me laugh

"do not f***ing bet in this race... but then again, I know you will, so stick with Auvergnat. Only 7 and should improve with time. If you can get decent price for a place then that's the bet to have"

lol
