Cheltenham Preview Nights 2018

Lydia's nap in the Grand Annual doesn't run if you believe Paul Nicholls. The same owner has Dolos in the race so DDC will be saved for later in the month. That's a shame as he's very well handicapped

Where have you heard that Mark?

I have backed Diego Du Charmil but Nicholls has never given any indication it would take up the engagement. Always seemed to have preferred Dolos. Like so many in race they are almost certainly better on quicker ground.

History would suggest that anyone who follows Hislop's tips are halfway to poor house, if not already in residence.

Sean Graham Preview, Europa Belfast 05/03/2018

David Casey
Gordon Elliott
Mark WInstanley
Gary O'Brien
Richard Hoiles
Neil Mulholland

Supreme
David Casey says ground is a positive for Getabird. Says it’s a fragile horse and difficult to train. Thinks 6/4 is too short and will go off at a bigger price than that.
Gordon Elliott thinks Getabird is the one to beat. Stood at the finishing line at Punchestown and was very impressed.
Couch – negative about Getabird; never won left handed. Run out the course in a P2P. David Casey interjected and said left handed is no problem. Couch keen on Paloma Blue each way.

Arkle
Casey said Footpad much more reliable than Getabird. Jumping is perfect. His understanding is Ruby will ride.
Elliott thinks Petit Mouchoir has improvement in him. Can get very temperamental in the parade ring – if so, don’t back!
Couch – negative about Petit Mouchoir’s jumping (can’t afford mistakes in an Arkle).

Champion Hurdle
Casey was asked on a scale of 1-10 how Faugheen doing he said 3! He continues to work well but his performances on the course are nowhere near the same standard – hard to be confident he says. Said Yorkhill winning would not surprise him but reckons he may go Ryanair (that’s what Casey wants!).
Elliott said Buveur D’Air a good thing and My Tent or Yours will be second.
Couch and Richard Hoiles suggested Elgin e/w without Buveur D’Air and referenced that really good handicap hurdle form
Neil Mulholland suggested Wicklow Brave e/w and Casey didn’t put anybody off that.
Brian Graham tipped John Constable at 40/1 (lolololol)

Ballymore Novice Hurdle
Gordon Elliott – very happy with Samcro (didn’t want to talk about it too much which I generally find to be a positive with Elliott) Said the travel over is always a concern.
Couch – said Samcro is good enough to run in Champion Hurdle and thinks it’s the real deal.
Hoiles asked about English contenders. Said he thinks On The Blind Side in the wrong race (should be in Albert Bartlett). Couch pointed out reports that On The Blind Side has sore shins.
Casey likes Next Destination but needs good ground.

RSA
Couch – Presenting Percy best horse in the race
Hoiles – race goes to Ireland. Found it odd that PP had a run over hurdles so close to a chase at Cheltenham.
Elliott thinks his Dounikos is a good bet each way. Stated that Monalee not good enough.
Casey said that PP’s run at Gowran was disappointing. Likes Black Corton.

Champion Hurdle
Casey – plan is to run Min and Douvan. Douvan in great form but needs to work impeccably this week and big improvement next wee (said in a tone that suggested to me that Douvan will not make it). Champion Chase was plan for Min all season despite reports.
Hoiles suggested Gods Own e/w without Altior.

Bumper
Casey said Blackbow is the Mullins best entry. Said will run a big race and hard to beat.
Elliott was very positive about Felix Dessjy e/w – he has booked Davy Russell to ride him!

Ryanair Chase
Casey said softer ground a big positive for Un De Sceaux. Spoke glowingly about Yorkhill and that he wants him to run in this race. Suggested we back Yorkhill Non Runner No Bet.
Elliott likes UDS
Hoiles thinks Waiting Patiently would struggle to get up the hill and connections are concerned about that also (might just go to Aintree).
Couch backing UDS

Stayers Hurdle
Elliott not sure about Sam Spinner’s jockey in an occasion like this. Like Supasundae.
Casey said this was one of the most open races of the meeting. Thinks Harry each way is a decent bet.
Couch backing Supasundae

Triumph
Couch – doesn’t understand the Redicean hype. Won three times at Kempton and would have serious doubts about Cheltenham credentials. Backing Apples Shakira.
Elliott – likes Apples Shakira. Says his Farclas each way not without a chance.
Casey likes Sayo and says far too big a price

Albert Bartlett
Elliott says Dortmund Park travels well in his races. Has had a wind op and will that will bring big improvement.
Casey likes Duc De Genievres but said a very tough race.
Hoiles likes Chef Des Obeaux

Gold Cup
Couch pulled the race apart: Road to Respect won’t get the trip, Our Duke doesn’t jump well enough for a Cheltenham Gold Cup. Native River wasn’t good enough last year and won’t be this year. Might Bite the one to beat.
Hoiles pointed out that Gold Cup usually won by horse that hasn’t run in the race before: that points to Might Bite or Killultagh Vic
Casey said that Killultagh Vic is an inexperienced horse but has ability. Said Ruby will probably ride KV rather than Djakadam.
Elliott likes Killultagh Vic’s chances.

Other info
Elliott – Shattered Love will go in JLT rather than RSA. Jamie Codd booked to ride Squateur in Kim Muir.
Casey – Laurina will win! (Mares Novice Hurdle). Likes Max Dynamite in Coral Cup.
Neil Mulholland – tipped his own Kalondra each way in Novice Handicap. Says Doing Fine would need good ground in Kim Muir.

NAPS
Neil Mullholland – Un De Sceaux (Ryanair Chase)
Casey – Yorkhill if runs in Ryanair
Gary O’Brien – Presenting Percy
Gordon Elliott – Un De Sceaux
Hoiles – Cause of Causes
Couch – at a price: Devine Spear (Nicky Henderson in Grand Annual)

Seems odd not to come back to the Festival with a previous Festival winner to me though. Especially considering he isn't exactly weighed down with good chances. I can understand if they decide not to run him on soft, but if its decent ground by Friday I think they would be mad not to run DDC.

Where have you heard that Mark?

Think it was was in the Post when PFN was going through some of his Festival horses. Acid test - tomorrow when 5 day decs are published. PFN said they have a race at Ascot in mind on March 25th.

Ok cheers. DDC for the Grand Annual was actually my very first festival antepost bet!

I hope you're right. They go a million miles in this so chasing Saint Calvados at Warwick was probably good practice. As I suggested on another thread perhaps 70% of entries would like good ground.

Taunton might be streaming ?

‘Taunton streaming Nichols steaming’ would have been good name. Enjoys a glass of red does Paul, but I do find he generally over exaggerates his horses chances

Really strange comments from Gordon Elliot regarding Monalee, was bullish about him being the biggest threat to Death Duty for last years Albert Bartlett and if anything he's come on a chaser but yet GE doesn't think he's good enough to win an average enough RSA?

Get Hend & Nichols together with a few bottles of red in front of them, that would be fun to watch...

I'm fairly sure that, at different events, Gordon has been against Getabird and very impressed with him. This year's Davy.
