Cheltenham Gold Cup 2018

Judging fox norton on today's run is a dangerous game. The one to beat in the Ryanair, no doubt.

I'll address this in the Ryanair thread when I get chance:p:devilish:

Yeh I agree his idling is abit worrying but it may just be that he wants a horse upsides him for him to pull out more. The only time one passed him was Whisper in the RSA and look how battled back there. Certainly think Nico should be just sitting in behind the front 2/3 and then come with a late challenge at the last... Any earlier and it could become a very long uphill after the last for MB. Still very much retain faith in my 5pt EW double with MB at 9s and Footpad at 8s though :very_drunk:

Yes very good point in fairness and an even better bet.

I love yorkhill and might bite who both may idle ... they can definitely still win but idling won't help but as you say, doesn't always lose you a race

I doubted Might Bite all last season and have become a bit of a convert now. Good run - felt he ended up at the front earlier than Nico would've liked as BDM blundered, but I'd definitely say the risk looks to me like an out and out stayer could grind him down

I think you can put a line through the English contenders if that’s the best we’ve got. Double Shuffle almost pulled off a major shock and Tea for Two wasn’t far behind. Their proximity does little for the form.
I think the pundits had pre-prepared their plaudits for MB and just had to go with the flow despite a rather uninspiring victory.
Yorkhill, Disko, Coney Island, SJ will all be sleeping soundly tonight.

So will Our Duke ;) whose novice chase win at Leopardstown over Coney Island and Disko at 3m in the Grade 1 is absolutely cracking.

Got beaten over 2m5f by Disko the same season as that win, but I think you can make a solid enough case that Disko is best at around that trip. However, whatever Disko's best trip, for me it is undeniable that Our Duke is better over further.

They're 16/1 16/1 and 25/1 and all live contenders for me

I think you have to remember that Might Bite is your original screw and you can't use the distance between himself and the field as any reliable yardstick.
He gets lonely in front, loses concentration and his mind wanders.
I was stood by the last in the RSA and he was looking everywhere but at the fence ahead of him, he then wanted to head up the chute and back to the boxes, Whisper gained the 10-12l back and went past and the horse started racing again, that's just him, a complete loon.
He won't forge clear of the Gold Cup field so won't have those issues to deal with so for me has every chance...

Hendo usually leaves plenty of room for improvement and will train harder closer to the race.

Most interesting race of the season so far tomorrow?

Sensible thing would be to back the race-fit, bang in form, 3 time Gold Cup, distance winner at odds against....

versus the headstrong, idling, distance unproven Mullins horse, first time out.... who doesn't have the fantastic Ruby on-board. Paul did NOT get on well with Yorkhill at Aintree.

So why, with all those negatives, can I not bring myself to have a massive bet on Sizing John tomorrow...

If Yorkhill runs creditibly in defeat, they'll point to having Ruby back and coming on for the run next time her races... so they have nothing to lose in a way? (The horse can also go elsewhere!.... but if Yorkhill wins tomorrow, he wins the Gold Cup, for me.

Head says Sizing John, Heart says Yorkhill

I’m with you Kev. I thought Yorkhill ran the most impressive race of last year when getting beat by Road to Respect.
He must have run twice as far as RtR when jumping so far left, yet still got so close to getting his head up.
I’ve been so impressed with both his runs at Cheltenham and think he’s this years Gold Cup winner if they let him go that route.
I’m hoping tomorrow is his coming of age race.

That'll give this a shake up

Where does yorkhill go Now? Won't be gold cup that's for sure.

Already got him at 29.0 so hope so.
Original plan was yo back him for CH after this but he jumped and travelled so well, wouldn't make sense.

Ryanair according to pp

PP cut him for that aswell.

Not conclusive at all ... if they knew he'd be shorter than the 7/1 or 6/1 .... but looks to be between the two based on today.

Probably deserves another crack as he was in front waaay too soon but he won't get another chance anyway.

He'd have been worse if townend tried to restrain him back, atleast he won't be any worse off for the run.

I’d like to see Ruby ride him over that distance, but I now think he’s destined to batter UDS at Cheltenham.

Blows open the Irish side, there’s a few Novices there with a strong hand.

Been a while since i've been on the forum but seems the ideal time after the last few days. Before I get into my thoughts on some of the runners and outcomes of recent days...

Sizing John reported to be clinically abnormal post race

Anyone have any idea what this could mean? He was visually distressed after the race
