Cheltenham 2020 - Ante post bets

With Champagne Classic being ruled out today it reminds me of a point I think Archie made earlier in the season about the risk in backing horses that had missed a previous Festival through injury. Off the top of my head that’s Malone Road, Saldier and CC that have failed to turn up 2 years in a row now. Some stats perhaps to look at in the summer

Dinky Douvan as well...

This year I have have now lost ante post bets on 18 different horses because of injury. Unbelievable. This years is like no other. Who says horses get injured less on soft ground?

Strange question, wasn’t sure where to post it, but does anyone know when the Racing post cheltenham ultimate guide newspaper is out in shops? Says posted out 28th Feb online, but I usually get it from my local shop, which has sadly closed. Not sure where else sells it.

Glenloe too

Someone must have had them in a canadian.

King Pimm ?????

I’ve lost 34 horses so far from injury, set backs or bypassing the festival in my Antepost betting ‘portfolio’ and more annoyingly quite a number of them I had little belief or love beforehand for but chased the wave in the market in fear of missing out. I can’t say I had any confidence in Champagne Classic, Glenloe, Douvan backed anyway. Lots of mistakes to be noted and learnt from for next year but on the plus side I’ve still got 196 horses backed and still in play so got a good chance of getting some money back :stupid:

TKP - if you have access to several bookmakers work the free bets, there are plenty out there and you can use them to build a Cheltenham portfolio and when (not if) some of yours go down you get comfort from the knowledge that you’re only losing free bets....

Yeah I know I’m missing out on a number of good strategies like the free bet offers which I plan to take advantage of next season. Plus I need to learn how to lay horses. I’ve been too indecisive this year and instead of betting what I felt was the right horse I have ended up following other people’s selections and watering down my potential profit. I finally backed Rouge Vif in the Arkle today which was the only horse in the market I didn’t have covered. It’s pathetic as I may have the top 3 places in the Arkle and still make a loss on the race!! Lots to learn for next season but at least I’ll win a few races!!

It’s OK to have a losing bet as long as you understand why the bet lost, you learn from it, and make better judgements/improve your strategies next time.
I wish you well...

Cheers buddy, I think I’m in a stronger position this festival thanks to the advice, guidance and thoughts on this Forum to back up my own judgement but I’ve been very wasteful at the same time. I just want the Festival to start now as every day that passes I’m expecting to lose another backed horse and a load of bets with it.

Istabraq, what would you say are the best free bet offers going? I’m assuming one has to stake regular bets during the week to obtain them?

Unfortunately Pie, it appears his stubbornness and bloody mindedness (and pride) knows no bounds, and the longer he's left it the harder it is to come back.
Not grown up behaviour Lobos (I know you're watching)

That’s why I like and dislike him on occasions sooo much :highly_amused:

Our biggest strengths are our biggest weaknesses :encouragement:

I've only got Sky and betway accs and a restricted Betfred acc but I do have access to a Paddy Power acc but pretty much every online bookie will have some offering.

Yes you need to bet regularly but many in here do, the qualification is often only £10/£25 a week.

PP seem you give a free £10 bet every week, presumably for betting a certain amount in the previous week.
Sky give you the free fiver a week but in the past have given free £50 bets if you place a £50 bet on certain event, usually a World Cup/Euro's match.
The best one for me is betway, I somehow became a VIP with them and they do plenty of bet £100 on an event and get a free £100 bet, also, finish runner up in a TV race of 6 runners or more and you get a free bet up to a max £200.

Essentially just be clever and spread your business around if you can, hoover up whatever free bets are offered and although a fiver may not seem like a great deal of money if you're getting 4 or 5 fivers a week and the odd bigger free bet you can very easily build yourself a considerable Cheltenham portfolio.
But follow the specials offers, if you're looking to have an interest in Real Madrid/Man City for fun then go where you can get a nice free bet...

Basically, back and lay to produce the free bet. Simple Matched Betting practice...

But we won't discuss that here.

Mengli Khan has four or five entries at Cheltenham including the Champion Hurdle.

He has been declared to run at Leopardstown on Sunday in a 2M2F Hurdle.

I remember being at that Leopardstown in 1994 (checked the RP database) when Time For a Run won a 2ml handicap and nearly pulling Charlie Swans arms off. We travelled to Cheltenham that year and couldn't believe that we were able to get our Leopardstown winnings on @ 16/1+ TFAR for the Coral Cup. He won easily @ 11/1. That was the same 10 day between runs. What a day.

So I have backed MK @ 33/1 NRNB but only for The Coral
