Cheltenham 2014 Arkle Trophy Chase

Surprising Oscar Whisky not given the option. Noticed that Henderson only had two entries across the four novice chases.

Timeform expecting an Irish winner by the look of the ratings

he Racing Post Arkle Chase was inaugurated with it s current title in 1969, after Arkle’s three wins in the Cheltenham Gold Cup (1964-66). In its first year, the race was worth £1,365, and was won by Chatham (10/1), trained by Fred Rimell and ridden by Terry Biddlecombe. The 2014 running has record prize money of £150,000.

It was known as the Cotswold Chase before 1969. The Racing Post, which backed the Arkle Chase for the first time in 2012, is only the race’s fourth sponsor. The Irish Independent was the sponsor from 2000 to 2011 , Guinness sponsored from 1994 until 1999 and Waterford Cystal between 1991 and 1993.

FIELD SIZE
The lowest number of runners has been seven (2013) and the highest 19 (1987 & 2005) as the Arkle Chase –
though there were 25 runners in the Cotswold Chase in 1960. The current safety limit is 20.

MOST SUCCESSFUL OWNER
The late David Johnson with four winners – Or Royal (1997), Champleve (1998), Well Chief (2004) and Contraband (2005).

MOST SUCCESSFUL TRAINER
Tom Dreaper and Nicky Henderson are the most successful trainers of all time with five victories each. Dreaper
scored with Fortria (1958), Mountcashel King (1961) , Ben Stack (1961), Flyingbolt (1965) and Alpheus (1971)
while Henderson’s winners so far have been Remittance Man (1991), Travado (1993), Tiutchev (2000), Sprinter
Sacre (2012) and Simonsig (2013).

MOST SUCCESSFUL JOCKEY
The most successful jockey is Barry Geraghty, with four wins – Moscow Flyer (2002), Forpadydeplasterer
(2009), Sprinter Sacre (2012) and Simonsig (2013).

A P McCoy has won the race three times, while Glen Kelly, Pat Taaffe and Jamie Osborne have also enjoyed three victories.

BETTING
The longest-priced winner was Gala’s Image, successful at 25/1 in 1987. The shortest-priced winner was Simonsig, returned at 8/15 in 2013. In the 66 runnings since 1946, a total of 16 favourites (24 per cent) have prevailed.

AGE
The oldest winners were the nine-year-olds Sir Ken (1956) and Danish Flight (1988). The five-year-olds Grand Refrain (1949), High Level (1950), Red Steel (1951), Nautical Print (1952), Bramble Tudor (1953), Armorial III (1954), Manuscrit (1955) , Ballyatom (1957), Chatham (1969), Soloning (1970) , Champleve (1998), Flagship Uberalles (1999), Well Chief (2004) and Voy Por Ustedes (2006) are the youngest winners.

The overall breakdown by age is as follows:
5yo - 14 wins
6yo - 19 wins
7yo - 19 wins
8yo - 12 wins
2yo - 2 wins

RECORD TIME
The fastest time for the two miles of the Racing Post Arkle Chase was 3m 46.5s by Tiutchev in 2000, beating

DID YOU KNOW?
Until 1980, the Racing Post Arkle Chase was always run on the Wednesday of the The Festival. It now takes place on the opening day, Tuesday. The Racing Post Arkle Chase has always been a fiercely contested event, and the following winners have gone on to other Championship victories at The Festival:

2012 Sprinter Sacre (Queen Mother Champion Chase winner 2013)
2010 Sizing Europe (Queen Mother Champion Chase winner 2011)
2006 Voy Por Ustedes (Queen Mother Champion Chase winner 2007)
2003 Azertyuiop (Queen Mother Champion Chase winner 2004)
2002 Moscow Flyer (Queen Mother Champion Chase winner 2003 & 2005)
1999 Flagship Uberalles (Queen Mother Champion Chase winner 2002)
1995 Klairon Davis (Queen Mother Champion Chase winner 1996)
1991 Remittance Man (Queen Mother Champion Chase winner 1992)
1978 Alverton (Cheltenham Gold Cup winner 1979).
Alverton is the only horse to have won both the Racing Post Arkle Chase and Betfred Cheltenham Gold Cup

So no Champagne Fever in this Sunday's Arkle chase. Mozoltav could be a lively outsider. I was looking back through his form and the last time that he has lost was back at the Punchestown Festival in the bumper against Champagne Fever. He beat the useful yardstick Mallowney last time too. I think Felix Yonger whiel he goes on soft ground, is better seen on better ground and he might not be at his best. Defy Logic has good form on soft so wont be an issue to him. Mozoltav 20/1 with some firms and only 12/1 with PP could be a play before the race on Sunday....

I think Mullins is going to end up with a minimum of two in most of the big races.

He has a pretty bad record in this race through - black stair mountains fifth his best showing so far.

I must have another look at Kings entries - looks like when he runs one it should be respected.

Looks now like Trifolium will be Gigginstown Arkle horse so Mozoltav for JLT. Havent a notion whether Mullins runs Felix or Champagne Fever here now. Twitter saying Defy Logic burst. Irish form all over the shop.

Trifolium could be the one but wondering about Rock on Ruby again:confused:

with the rain continuing to come i cant see good ground coming for day 1 of the festival im on ROR myself but now thinking trifolium could be a good one for this race. has run 3rd in a supreme and seems to go on any ground and this is his only target by the looks of it 10/1 with ladbrokes. Very muddling race at the moment!

yeah hoping for better ground for ROR worries me he has had 1 run over fences which was effectively a match against a crap horse! runnning out of time to get a few races into him before the festival.. I have a very sneaky feeling champagne fever is going to be the RSA horse

5 of the last 13 winners were the highest-rated hurdler in the field
The last 23 winners have started at 11/1 or shorter, but only 5 favourites won
Five year olds have won 4 of the last 14, but since 2008 there is no 5lb weight allowance
The Irish have won 3 of the last 16 renewals
French breds have won 8 of the last 19 renewals
German breds have 1 win and 3 places from 11 runners since 2002

thanks old vic desperate for the ground to dry out for ROR he needs another run or 2 before or i cant see him winning clearly the best hurdler in there

I suppose they must be looking at Warwick for Rock on Ruby now. Grandouet is the other one with the really top hurdles form but not the easiest to figure out. has the French pedigree and uk trainer with best race record and best 2 mile Chase jockey around but very poor LTO and has had some kind of February setback for last two seasons.

Assessing his runners, Mullins told At The Races: "I don't think Felix Yonger likes that [heavy] ground. He's a good ground horse. I remember when he first came from Howard Johnson's that he was one of the best athletes.

"Mozoltov ran a cracker on only his second start over fences. Both will go up in trip now as they both want two and a half miles.

"Champagne Fever runs next in the Dr PJ Moriarty Chase over two miles five [furlongs] on February 9. Ruby [Walsh] is fairly keen to bring him back to two miles for the Arkle."

That result yesterday was probably the worst possible result in terms of clearing things up for the Festival! Felix Yonger didn't show that his class but I think that the ground had a big bearing on that. On better ground I would certainly be giving him another chance. If he had have won decisively then he would have booked his ticket to the Arkle and Champagne Fever would go up in trip. As it is now CF might come back for the Arkle but I think stepping FY up in trip is the wrong decision regardless. Trifolium has improved no end since being well beaten by FY and he did come second to Defy Logic at Christmas. Defy Logic just made a terrible mistake that put paid to his chance and he probably needs a rest now but won't be out of it come March.

defy logic burst a blood vessel so that explains the way he ran... previous form puts him bang in there with the other irish horses and 20/1 seems big ive had a few quid on myself nothing big mind.... very hard race to get a grip on this!
