Ballymore Novice Hurdle 2019

Fair to say the Ballymore still seems quite cloudy at present.

Oh for the days of Samcro....

Fair to say all 3 of them did?

With Battleoverdoyen we won't have any clue which side of the Irish sea is stronger - but you can definitely make a case for all 4 of them?

I havne't backed Champ other than related double with Birchdale,m so as he's the shortest, and I've missed a price, I find myself wanting to 'get him beat'... but impossible to knock him based on today... whether it enhances his claims or not is harder. Brewin looks to have been a better horse today, than when they met?

Definitely one of my better race positions this one having backed Champ 10s, Battleoverdoyen 16s, Birchdale 20s, and Brewin’upastorm 33s and 25s for similar payouts (cashed out others). Think Champ is a fair fav and wouldn’t want to call it between the four of them at this stage, but have to say I feel a brewing affection (excuse the pun) with Brewin’upastorm, in part because he is from a smaller stable. Was really enjoying that performance today and really hope he has come out of it ok. Fingers crossed he lines up in March as he’ll be the one i’ll be routing for most.

Thankfully the horse and jockey are ok but it really would have been helpful if Brewinupastorm had been able to get over the last so we had a clear(er) line between Champ and Birchdale.

Brewinupastorm the one to take out of the race for me but then going into the festival on the back of a fall is far from ideal either (though I know it has been done with the likes of Black Hercules, Ballyalton etc)

Entries for the Dubling Racing Festival will be out Monday. Hoping Tornado Flyer is ok and gets an entry as still haven't given up hope there

Now I'm feeling more levelled headed.

Thoughts about today? Champ enhanced his credentials without running?

Probably has. I genuinely think birchdale will be better. I also get the feeling, Barry hendo etc... All think so too.

However, right this minute I can't argue that champs in pole position of the 2. If the race was today he may well have beat birchdale.
What birchdale would have learned today would be invaluable going forward.

The Irish are up next week, so we'll see if battleoverdoyen is the best of them or not

Birchdale a big baby doubt he will even run. Talented horse though.

Still 20/1 in a place for Birchdale... (BV)

I was on at 20/1 pre race.

On that basis, and the quite clear soundbite from Nicky that he's a Ballymore horse, I'll add another 1 pt e/w

AP in no doubt which is the better horse. He's a shrewd judge.

Made a fine call in the stayers hurdle behind Annie. And pretty sure he was putting up yanworth for the champion even on the day. As buveur dair breezed past.

Champ is named after him. Ofcourse he has to choose him.

With that interview and how the race unfolded looks pretty concrete that both Champ and Birchdale run here. Both certainly don't look like they want 3 miles yet,

- We know JP isn't averse to running 2 good ones in a race if the are best suited (My Tent Or Yours vs Jezki)
- Nor is Henderson (Ok Corral and Santini)
- And they are set up with splitting the job between Mark Walsh and Geraghty over the last 18 months for 2 good cracks at a race

He said he'd have to choose him - meaning because of the name. Not much has been made of the fact that Birchdale (and Brewing) absolutely smashed up Jarvey's Plate - who some thought was quite good until yesterday.

Ok - so Olly Murphy has now just made that point on RTV. I suppose he was bound to agree.

Yes, I agree jono. Good examples.

Who do you prefer of the two?

Hard to split the pair really. Like you I feel I've missed the prices on Champ whereas I have a price on Birchdale. I think it's clear they are both at different levels of their careers and progression despite both lining up here. Champ is far from the finished article himself yet is a fair way in front of Birchdale. So for that reason it would be good to see them get another run into Birchdale.

I'd be of the view Brewin'upastorm ran better yesterday than he did at Newbury, and the amount of money that came for him and made him fav could suggest that too. And it does look like connections (Henderson and Geraghty) have a hard time splitting them.

I'm happy to stay on the side of Birchdale still as there does seem to be little between them yet the price difference doesn't reflect this.

Taking prices out of it though,
I think Birchdale is the better long term prospect (agree with Jackie that already you'd be excited towards staying chasing next year)
But I think Champ could be better short term with this race in mind

I read the chat afterwards totally differently to Jono and Kevloaf.

I think they are desperate not to run Birchdale against Champ at cheltenham, hence all the talk of big baby.

"We know JP isn't averse to running 2 good ones in a race if the are best suited (My Tent Or Yours vs Jezki)

Both individually valid arguments but...
Any examples of horses both hendo trained and J.P owned opposing in graded race?(Outside of pacemaker status?)

I'd be very surprised if both ran in this. Though expect both to be left in race till very late in case of injury.

Was at chelt yesterday so been catching up and re watching the races.
especially the ballymore trial to see how well or not Brewin was going compared to birch.
really Hard to be sure what would have happened and Birchdale definitely looked novicey/green.
Just a bit suspicious of how tired he appeared to be getting running to the line, but that's probably harsh as he was only being pushed out and was a bit babyish like others have said, it's just a nagging doubt for me.
Brewin one of the few I've not covered but will be interested in it nearer the day I reckon.

Pretty small sample size you're allowing there though?

I can't think of any times Hendo/JP have actively avoided a clash? In most cases it probably makes sense.... but wouldn't you expect Frank Berry to put them in the races they have the best chance of winning?

Actually, i can recall them running against each other in the championship races!(My Tent or Yours and Buveur D'Air Champion Hurdle!).That was the championship race,no other options available. But think that is a bit different to this situation where its all about the future for Birchdale,. You could well be right, just giving my opinion.
