We are getting closer to the start of the season 'proper' so I've decided, off the back of last seasons Champion Bumper 2nd, Heads Up, getting an entry at Listowel on Thursday, to create the 2026 novice hurdle thread.

On Heads Up, he created a very good impression in the Champion Bumper and almost stole it from the front. I see he's priced up for all three novice hurdle races, with best prices being 40/1 (Supreme), 33/1 (Turners) & 40/1 (Albert Bartlet).

For me it is the latter of the three that he interests me the most for, despite looking to start out over 2m.

They've ridden him in every bumper, bar his debut, like a stayer, from the front, and it paid off big time, winning 1 and finishing 2nd three times, including the big one at the festival.

I'm not convinced the Champion Bumper will hold up in terms of substance for races like the Supreme & Turners, but the Albert Bartlett generally requires that little bit less class and a little more guts for it, and I think Heads Up fits that profile.

Having already had 5 bumper runs he's already gained some vital experience and with a potential early start over hurdles, should he take up his engagement next Thursday, it looks as though they may be getting some experience into him over the hurdles too.

Assuming he is declared, whether he wins or not is not a massive factor at this stage of the season, especially where a Bartlett is concerned. A lot of horses have been beat during the season and gone on to win Bartletts, including the past three seasons winners.

John McConnell is no stranger to a Bartlett runner and seems to favour a runner in this race over other options.

I was going to add Heads Up in my list of horses to follow but haven't had the time to keep that up to date recently, so instead I decided to open up the 2026 Novice Hurdlers thread with him.

Will look forward to the obvious engagement on the other novice hurdle races and potential runners too. Mullins bingo welcome, much to some peoples dismay :ROFLMAO:

Davy Crockett has been entered in a 2 mile novice hurdle at Listowel on the 24th, 1 of the 5 Mullins runners entered.

IIRC, Willie had previously mentioned Listowel but then indicated a winter programme would be in order for DC as he thought he might be a "proper horse" or some such.

Runs in June, July and September wouldn't exactly scream Supreme winner, though there are some useful looking types entered so the race could certainly help sort out a pre Royal Bond pecking order for the 2 mile novices.

Mystery Power ran May, July, Jan before 2nd in the Supreme, so Mullins has form for Summer programme, so maybe dont discount DC?

He did, and I think he was trying it with Hercule De Seuill until he disappointed. A lot probably depends on the horse and Davy Crockett could have that ability but he hasn't looked like a supreme winner in waiting. I don't like them this far out. Quite happy for him to be taking a big chunk of the market at this stage

The one im looking forward to and have back for the Supreme is Windbeneathmywings. Would be nice to see the Pipes with a good one again.

Agreed, it's not a reason to discount him. He's a good winner for me in the Supreme at the moment but it's a question mark imo.

As You say C.o.D , The right trainer for a Bartlett runner .. I backed head's up myself for the C.B. after he hosed up at Punchestown.
and forgot i had , until he cruised up in the cheltenham race .
Good shout i'd say .. and a decent price . (y).

I see I’ll Sort That is entered up next Wednesday at Listowel. He’s one I’m keen to keep an eye on for collateral form with a few I’m sweet on.

Sortudo (Supreme)
Doctor Du Mesnil (Supreme/Turners) on a line through Strong Link with Thedeviluno*
Theflyingking (Albert Bartlett)

I’d like to see the latter be a lot less green & race with a lower head carriage over hurdles this season. I think hurdles & a trip will be the making of him.

DC declared for Thursday in a field of 5.

I’ll Sort That wins impressively in the first at Listowel. Led from flag to post, had the field well spread out.

I think that bumper form of his is worth noting. Strong Link has won three on the bounce since he was well beaten at Naas & four winners have come from the narrow Fairyhouse win ahead of Theflyingking.

….looks like Davy Crocket into a best 12-1 Supreme after that win. 8-1 a/r (from 10-1) Hills.

Davy Crocket won that easily enough, but I'm not sure I saw what I'd want in a Supreme winner. Travelled well enough, but didn't quicken as easily as I expected him to when a gap opened along the rail. Perhaps Willie has left plenty on him, but I'm not sure I'd be taking the 12/1.

You can understand why. Won, but wasn't overly impressive, IMO, getting 2lb from a 124 rated hurdler in 2nd, and winning by 4 lengths.

Early days though, plenty to improve on.

Mullins said:- “He jumped so slick for a horse having just his second run over hurdles. He missed the last alright, but he was so slick at some of the other hurdles and is obviously taking after his mother.

“He looks sharp, and I can see him improving for the rest of the season and hopefully he can go up in grade.

“Tipperary will probably come a bit soon for him and we could look at the Royal Bond.

Thanks Eggs. That's borderline tempting for the book ... 12-1 is definitely too short. That's about right. Willie, thinking out loud, seemed to discuss Royal Bond, MF route.
