2026 Novice Chasers

he’s only a novice til the drinmore remember I am maximus won it after winning the Irish national
I am Maximus won the Irish National on the 10th April, the season ended that year on the 29th April. This year the season ended on the 26th April and Western Fold won 8th May.

Any thoughts on brighterdaysahead? Am tempted to back her for the mares chase at Cheltenham......even with her two previous runs at Cheltenham being poor

I would think that there are enough doubts about her acting around Cheltenham (and not a guaranteed target) to be considering her at 4/1 or 5/1.

There are plenty of horses at bigger prices with more certain targets that I would be backing first (ie State Man at 7/1 EW for Champion Hurdle)

Yeah, looks like still a novice to me with first chase win on the 8th May. Type who would of been a prime candidate for the NH Chase in its older format. Strange why no one has him priced up. Getting some great chasing experience though after the Galway Plate and then tomorrow against Heart Wood and Croke Park.
Yeah he's a novice for the season, could potentially be one of the highest rated novices around come March.

Anyone know the latest news on Romeo Coolio? Didn't pick up an injury did he?
Don't think there is anything wrong with him. He goes novice chasing but connections seem unsure of what his trip will be

If he is only a novice to the Drinmore does that mean he would not be eligible for the BANC?
He’s a novice all season if connections want him to run in them

Mullins looks to have his usually strong hand with staying novice chasers this year, I get the interest in Game of Inches but you'd think Final Demand right now is their obvious BANC horse so what the target for this one will be is a guess up, maybe Irish National or the NH Chase or both ?
There's the possibility of Kel Histoire, Jimmy Du Seuil and Jasmin de Vaux as staying chasers too.
is Funiculli Funiculla going chasing ? Aren't they quite keen on him ?
There was talk of Anzadum chasing too as well as Salvator Mundi and Irancy, they can't all be Arkle horses given Kopek Des Bordes has to have that on his schedule.
This season will be the same as every other with Mullins and it will only start to make sense around early March....

Irancy; ‘i think our inclination at the minute is to stay hurdling with him. He’s been a difficult horse to train, and he might be easier to train if we stay over hurdles. I don’t want to be held to that, but that’s the way I’m thinking at the minute. He has a huge engine and would seem to be a two-miler.’

Anzadam; ‘He looks to have enough potential to be sent down the Champion Hurdle route. We had a few bits of bother with him last season, but so far this season he has been good. He has the ability, he has the engine, just sometimes his training schedule gets interrupted. If we get a clear run at him, we have the Fighting Fifth Hurdle in mind as his starting point. He’s owned by the same connections as State Man, so rather than them both running in the Morgiana, it will make sense to split them up.’

Gameofinches; ‘He’s a huge horse and his summer break has done him the power of good. He’s turning seven and with the size of him, we don’t think he’d have much respect for hurdles, so I think we’re going to go straight over fences with him. He looks a staying type.’

Salvator; ‘He’s a very strong-going horse. The Donnellys have State Man and Anzadam already, but I think this fella could be another one of Champion Hurdle quality if he was asked to do that. However, looking at how keen he is in his races, we’re going to go over fences with him and give him the chance to be an Arkle horse. He has huge ability, a lot more than he has shown on the track so far. If he settles better over fences, he’ll hopefully show on the track what he has shown us at home.’

I'd personally be thinking arkle for gameofinches until he shows he's not fast enough on the track, regardless of what mullins says in any stable tours. He cantered through his bumper on the bridle, not looking like a boat that needs a lot further. You could say he wasn't fast enough for the champion bumper but to be honest I think he was given a very tender educational ride and they were looking after him, and they made a big deal beforehand about mentioning the short gap between his bumper win and the festival. So I wouldn't take that as conclusive that he needs further. He's also been pretty keen in both runs, which he'd need to mature out of very quickly over obstacles if he's going to be running over 3m right away. Owners also have final demand for the BANC. Wouldn't be shocked if it was the other way around either though, and final demand ends up an arkle horse.

There is no way final demand will run in the arkle. It is clear to see that he is a stayer. What makes you think arkle ?

Let's see where they all start out and take it from there. If Willie starts them out over 2 then they normally stay there.

I wouldn't say I think arkle over BANC, just saying I wouldn't rule it out at all and wouldn't be surprised. Over hurdles yes he looks a stayer, as he doesn't have the speed of horses like the new lion who he faced in the turners. But fences can change things, if he's a natural over them and wings every fence then that can make him more competitive against speedier types if he's gaining a length at every fence. For an example, you only have to go back to gaelic warrior a couple of years ago. He looked all over a stayer when beaten in the turners, and then stepping up to 3m and winning at punchestown, and the talk was very much about him being a future gold cup horse. But all it took was for him to look like a natural and wing every fence in his beginners chase and straight away mullins was saying he saw no reason for him to go 3m, and he ended up hosing up in an arkle. Mullins has said recently that he could start out over 2 and a half or even 2, so the possibility is there depending on how he takes to fences. I would still side with BANC, though just because he looks a bit more well stocked with 2m novice chasers than 3m.
