2017 Ryanair Chase

Personally think that Sizing John would have a favourites chance in this- would be a big ask to go straight to a 3m 2f Gold Cup after one tilt at 3m, and the Ryanair en route to a staying chase schedule next season looks logical, though it is up in the air right now.

HDB is a top trainer, has he really got it so wrong with this horse ?
Does is really take 3 years and 16 runs to establish the horse is a stayer ?
Not for me...

He clearly got it wrong to some degree though, only once run him over further than 2 miles, and he at least proved he gets 3 today, and as Tom Segal pointed out in his column the sire Midnight Legend has produced a number of decent stayers.

I'm with Ista - it was a steadily run race that turned into a sprint. It will be a totally different race in the gold cup and I think he'll struggle.

No doubt that he deserves his place though.

Possibly MTOY.
The finished in a heap so maybe went very slow helping potential non stayers, the time was 38 secs slower than standard.
Perhaps the ground wasn't that bad ?
But I can't have the horse in a brutal stamina sapping Gold Cup and if he was to take that route and run a big race then the owners should be taking a long hard look at HDB....

Yes totally agree with your comments re the race pace and he does still have it to prove over the Gold Cup trip, but yes I think they do need to look at Henry, he is a very good trainer, but 2 miles has looked too sharp for him for a good while.

Whether you're right or wrong about Sizing John staying, we all know the owners will be running him in the Gold Cup. Cliche I know, but they tried it with a Champion Chaser in Sizing Europe so any hopes and vouchers on Sizing John for this race are dead. Look elsewhere... apart from Fox Norton. Don't look at Fox Norton. He isn't good enough.

Why is EOD being smashed for this race?

Is UDS out or something?

I think they'd implied it would be the target. Maybe it is now confirmed.

I actually think he has a cracking chance. C&D winner, festival form, owners target a good one at it where they can... doubts about UDS on the likely ground, no sizing john. Next best in the betting could bounce?

I think the 10/1 was too big, in to 4s with the NRNB firms but still 9 available, which I think is really good value each way... definitely can't see him being out of the places!

**edit - http://cheltenham.attheraces.com/racecard/Cheltenham/16-March-2017/1450/long-range-forecast OR it could be that it has been made an ante-post selection by Gary Nutting... I imagine that microsite gets a lot of traffic!

Sizing john now into 4/1 for this with Skybet, has anything been said lately regarding his target?

They are NRNB ... still 10s available .... the owners will put the Irish Gold Cup winner in the Gold Cup.. Wouldn't waste time thinking about it :)

"If it's soft, Un De Sceaux will be impossible to beat in the Ryanair," says Henderson who runs Josses Hill and Vaniteux

If it is good, it would be impossible with those absolute bottle jobs.

French import Alary was a talking horse for the Gold Cup earlier in the season until he wilted tamely on his British debut in the Peter Marsh Chase at Haydock and then fell at Exeter.

Tizzard said: "I think Alary will go for the Ryanair Chase. I think he is a live player. He is a man of a horse. We jumped him this week and he never worried about the fact he had a fall."

------------------

Now he is 66/1 with Betfair (not NRNB) but that is a price I am willing to back a "hype horse" at. They bought him to win a Gold Cup.... and he has flopped twice, but it is his only entry. The owners have one in the Gold Cup (Sizing John) and Fox Norton (ha) as 2nd fav in the CC ... 66/1? for this? Won't be that on the day!!!

Am I missing something? (other than the obvious rubbish form?)

Tizz gave an interview after his debut and said that some French horses take a while to settle and adjust to UK surroundings, and Tizz has never rushed a horse, in fact he's been very critical of those who buy horses for instant results, I remember him saying some years ago that no-one has patience with their horses and they're not prepared to invest in the long haul.
I wouldn't be worried about his 'flops', if Tizz thinks he's a class act then he'll show it one day, there'll be worse 66/1 shots out there...

Its also the best price by quite some bit 1.5 points each way. To tell you the race and say it is a 66/1 live chance. Seems a good bet to me
