2017 Mares Hurdle

she runs on sat in the grade 2 mares hurdle at Ascot. 11/8 fav

Hadn't seen that... that's good.

Someone mentioned this earlier on tonight but I completely agree that this years version of the race COULD be a really good race. If Annie Power does turn up without a prep, plenty will want to take her on with it looking as deep as it does compared to other years.

Long way to go though, but first time I have been excited about this race since I've been in to racing... as a race. Obviously when Quevega was running at 10/11 and evens and I was "double or quits" using it as the 'get out' I was pretty excited too haha

I go to the Tuesday every year. Those memories of absolutely piling into Quevaga on course each year - great times.

One such time I had to make the demoralising trip to the portable cash machines... took out everything I had which was only about £220 at the time and it all went on .... felt like a gambling MASTER after it. How embarrassing haha

Airlie Beach goes straight to the festival

Unbeaten novice hurdler Airlie Beach is set to head straight to the Cheltenham Festival without another run.

The Willie Mullins-trained mare secured her seventh successive victory with a tremendous front-running display in the Royal Bond Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse in early December, providing the Supreme Horse Racing Club with its first Grade One success.

The seven-year-old has since enjoyed a mid-season break and while she holds an entry in the Deloitte Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown on February 12, she is likely to bypass that engagement and instead make her next appearance at Prestbury Park in March.

Steve Massey, racing manager for the owners, said: "She had a hard race in the Royal Bond, so we gave her a break and she's come back in very good order.

"She's obviously done fantastically well for us already and at this stage, we don't want her to have another hard race before Cheltenham, so the plan is to head straight there.

"We know Willie is more than capable of getting her ready at home and hopefully she'll head to Cheltenham with a big chance."

Airlie Beach is a best priced 7-2 favourite for the Trull House Stud Mares' Novices' Hurdle and as short as 10-1 for the Supreme Novices' Hurdle.

Massey expects the daughter of Shantou to line up in the former, but will leave a final decision to the trainer.

"She's 7-2 favourite for one race and I think you can get 16-1 for the Supreme," said Massey.

"The mares' novice hurdle would look the obvious race, but she's already entered in the open Mares' Hurdle as well and I'd imagine she'll be entered for every race she's eligible for.

"We always leave it to Willie to decide which race they should run in and he'll run her in the race he feels she's got the best chance of winning."

I absolutely love Annie but moving forward with the antepost market, Vroum Vroum Mag now leads the way at 13/8, shorter than what Annie was, and limini straight in to 7/2 when she was available at 14/1.... bookies are ruthless !!

Not sure where this belonds but as VVM is favourite for this i'll stick it here. Willie thinks she might have a cold coming on...

"It was probably one of her worst performances. She might have had a cough or cold coming on, but Paul (Townend) said she was never travelling. She jumped the last two hurdles and I'd say it was just her bravery that won it for her."

Something did have to be wrong, was way below her best.

I had 8 points on VVM to win any race at 11/4 .... I was convinced she'd be turning up in this race and I would be counting my money.... a cold or a cough isn't ideal is it haha

Im no vet but surely a cold in the grand scheme of things is no real concern.. should be well gone come March and at least has reason for underperforming. I think the 2/1 on offer is still decent considering she'll go off 4/6 on the day

Yeah good point DeeBee.... I forgot to say I was glad there was a reason given.

I'd probably start putting VVM in a few multiples if I was certain of the target. I have a niggle that Limini could go for this and VVM in the Stayers still

I dont know how bad a cold is for a horse but I guess id rather her not have one of I was on. Im not on her for any race yet and im not sure id choose this one. I could see her stepping up in trip or if Faugheen gets pulled from the Champion then I think she'll be in that. What price is she any race now?

Ruby said on the Opening Show he would like her to defend her crown, and he wants every horse to be in the race with the best chance of winning...

I do think Ruby is generally the best of the 3 (Mullins,Ricci) when it comes to targets.... but he did say Yorkhill would win the Arkle.

WH are 7/4 for this race, with the NRNB concession.... Not sure how short she'll get with Apples Jade due to run again...

Could it leave a mark ?

Im not sure OV. Willie didnt say and im not sure how a cold can affect a horse. I guess theres worse things to happen but i'd rather her not have had one if I was on

Very interesting that today on RUK Ruby mentioned VVM for the Mares "She'll need to improve on that (Doncaster run) in the Mares".
He also said on The Opening Show that he thinks she'll "go to the mares because it is the race she'd have the best chance of winning" because "I want to ride as many winners as I can".

Patrick Mullins on the RP CC podcast also said VVM "Obviously, I'd imagine she goes for the mares, I don't see why she'd go for the Champion Chase"

HOWEVER, PP are 2/1 (Betunfair are 9/4 same company) which is biggest price, and they're shortest for Limini at 7/2 who is also shortening on the exchanges.....

Are we about to be put away? Is something amiss? Am I reading too much in to it? - All signs lead to her defending her crown in this, but the markets aren't backing that up. In fact AJ has shortened?

On Apples JAde actually, does anyone fancy her to win this, or on at a nice price? - WIll be a horror show for me if AJ wins this, having backed her for the CH and Stayers already and with ante-post bets on VVM and Limini!

I think Apples Jade will win this.

Which means VVM goes to the Mares unless Ruby has another ride that has a better chance of winning. Not every Mullins horse will run in the race it has the best chance of winning unless Ruby is also available to ride.

FWIW I am in the Apples Jade camp at this stage also.
