2017 Cheltenham Gold Cup

You only ever really appreciate the depth of any renewal about 12 months later.

Cold sweats there Kev, I had the Bolster to pay off the mortgage the year he jumped the second last a length up....

Some feeling that must have been at that point... all the best stories end in defeat though, or people think you're smug haha

I just can't see him winning Kev, that's all. Even if Thistlecrack underperforms I'd be disappointed if Djakadam won the race.

I backed China Rock too

If he was 6/1 I'd probably agree, but for all the doubts, the price is absolutely fine.

I will certainly be cheering on Thistlecrack though, so it is a bit moot.

China Rock :highly_amused: I can't remember why I backed it now, was a big old price though wasn't he? 40s? SP was 25s but I tihnk I had bigger. Also was on What A Friend and Midnight Chase that year.... awful. haha

As much as I like Minella Rocco and have had a small amount on him I do worry now that coneygree is out and cue card may swerve this that it won't turn into a big enough stamina test for him similar to Don poli (who I like with the right conditions) there both out and out stayers and I don't see the race panning out right for them now.

I think between Thistlecrack and Native Rover it'll be a decent enough test if anything is good enough. Native River is likely to be at the front like in the Welsh National, but this time, horses are good enough to run past him.

I remember thinking China Rock had a chance at the top of the hill, he hit the next fence and was soon going backwards.

Gold Cups are becoming a bigger stamina test every year which is why, in my view, the 4m form holds more prominence.
It will be a proper test....

Not sure how I feel about this years fez, starting to look 2nd rate with all the horses that have fallen by the wayside. Just have to look harder I suppose but enthusiasm on the wane at the mo

I'm sure you'll be thinking differently at 9am on Champion Hurdle morning MrM ;)

Agree with that - hoping cue card runs

Altior vs Min - The Rematch
Douvan's unbeaten record on the line
Thistlecrack, can he do the unthinkable KG GC double

^ that is me doing my bit for Sky Sports News haha

Don Cossack retires!

Just came on for that! Such a shame. Takes away from the race, festival and sport a bit! Not unexpected though.

I lived the build up last year, battle of the Don's ....

The Gold cup picture at the start of the season - Vautour (dead), Coneygree (injured), Don Cossack (retired), Cue card (Ryanair bound?). Looks much thinner on the ground now. Thistlecrack, Djakadam and Native river.

Djakadam surely worth an EW punt at 14s even more so now? Can see Mullins having him primed for this race and if there were any mishaps to Thistlecrack in the jumping department then I think Djakadam might get his turn at the 3rd time of asking.

Couldnt agree more darlojim. Have just backed him at 14's myself. More than double your money for a place and always that chance of a bit more.

A real shame for the race. Thistlecrack aside the championship races this year are really lacking depth and superstars :(

I just hope IF TC does go onto the race we don't have everyone knocking the win saying he won a poor renewal and take away the achievement.

As soon as I heard the news of Don Cossack I rushed to see what price Djakadam expecting him to go to single figures but shocked he's still at 14's! VERY surprising

Looking for an each way double to put him in now...

Cheers Old Vic. Yes its a shame the Championship races appear to be cutting up. Got everything crossed the WPM / RR big guns make it else it really could be a sub standard year. Can't see many downsides to 14/1 Djakadam, perhaps with a cover bet on a Tizzard 1,2,3.

Outlander 16/1 shouldn't be overlooked. Seems to be improved over the longer trip in new hands and will be GH / Giginstown main focus now.

Another overpriced is Blaklion 50/1 on spring ground and course form.
