2015 Arkle Trophy Chase

On the morning line yesterday somebody emailed a question to A P and Ruby asking which of the other ones festival rides would they pinch if they could and without hesitation A P said Un De Sceaux in the Arkle, so he's obviously a much better horse in the eyes of the champ than I give him credit for. If he gets to the Arkle I'd like to see him do what so many people think he can, but I still have my doubts, time will tell I suppose. I'd still prefer to see Vautour in the race, looking unlikely now though, as others on here have said, JLT much more likely, unless he flops today, then he may be reverted to hurdles, wouldn't that put the cat amongst the pigeons.

Funny enough I think AP has the Arkle winner in Gilgamboa ! He has neem known to pick the wrong un !

Wonder if Vautour better when ridden from front ?

Would be another reason to keep him apart from UDS. They could cut one another's throats.

I think Vautour is better from the front, along with better ground and a faster pace, he seems to jump better and straighter at speed.

Ruby said front running wasn't planned ...

Ruby Walsh said: "I expected Real Steel to make it but we had to change tactics at the start. It was an honest race and he jumped super, travelled super and won as he liked. If anything he was a bit cleverer at his fences than when I last rode him at Navan.

"I've always thought he was a stayer and I've always ridden him as one. We made it in the Supreme and we made it here today, I don't doubt he would get further.

"I've always loved him, he's a horse with a huge future."

will be a great race next sunday un de sceaux v clarcam v Gilgamboa.

I think the Mullins plans will become a lot clearer after this. Win this and un de sceaux heads to the arkle an even money shot. I hope he romps it.

That will be best novice chase of the year if it comes off.

According to Paddy Power it's

UDS 4/5
Gilgamboa 11/4
Clarcam 9/2
Apache Stronghold 10/1

No price for Valseur Lido

Id say Valseur Lido will be a no show ?

I am tempted by Gilgamboa there.

Valseur Lido is 5/1 on Betfair
For me it's a case of watching brief or lay UDS [maybe in running], I just don't see what others seem to with this horse, perhaps he'll show why he's so highly thought of in this race

If there is a more exciting horse in training to watch other than UDS then I havent seen it.To see a horse go as fast from the start and to still be going as fast coming to the last in a 2m race is thrilling to watch.Apart from a blip when miles clear on debut this horse has done nothing wrong beating a 148 rated rival 12 lengths easily cud have been 20, nothing will see which way this horse goes, cant wait for sunday!

Hi Iain
I admire your confidence and maybe you're right, should be a good race to watch if that proves to be the case. The rating provided for Smashing is, again, something that appears dubious, are they taking the run against UDS into account, or had he achieved that prior to that race, because I remember watching the race and before the off Gary O'Brien was talking about the opposition and stated that the nearest to UDS in the betting, which was Smashing, was rated 123 over hurdles, no mention of a chase rating. Anyway I shall watch with interest, I'm always keen to see true champions establish themselves.

Nothing like a good 2 mile chase. We should have two crackers in March.

Sunday's race only the aperitif !

@racingtrends negative on UDS

The Irish Arkle is a race framed around the effect it will have on the respective targets of Willie Mullins' novice chasers at the Festival. Un De Sceaux wins and then sticks to two miles and the Arkle proper; Vautour goes for the JLT, likely along with Valseur Lido; Don Poli remains an RSA horse. This approach has problems: one fall could move all the pieces and it assumes Mullins is the only show in town with the Irish novices which simply isn't true - only five of Willie's 33 Cheltenham winners were novice chasers.

I don't like Un De Sceaux here. Gemix is the only horse of note he has beaten and he is hard to rate in an Irish context. Also, why hasn't he run in a Grade 1? It's hard to put a positive spin on that. He faces good horses like Clarcam who has been revolutionised by a wind op but preference is for Gilgamboa. He wasn't as good as Un De Sceaux or Vautour over hurdles but looks improved for fences, no surprise given his trainer. He caught my eye at Christmas, jumping and travelling supremely, and is a bet at 3.75.

I see Smashing is running today at Gowran, in the write up it mentions him being a 145 rated hurdler, but no mention of a chase rating, could be interesting to see how he goes today, currently around 4/7, if he wins well it should be a boost for UDS fans.
