Back to Silviniaco Conti, of course the doubt with him is the fact that all his form is on flat tracks. That said, he didn’t look too at home at Kempton and Ascot, so perhaps it’s more a case of him wanting to go left handed. What also muddies the water is that Nicholls said after his Aintree win “he’ll be really interesting next season. You´d have to be aiming him at the King George as he suits a flat track.” yet after Haydock this year said “he could be really interesting come Cheltenham. He won´t go to the King George”. Something has obviously changed Nicholls’ and Walsh’s opinion of the horse in between those two races. A cynic would say that they realised they had nothing for the Gold Cup and talked themselves into thinking Silviniaco Conti was a Cheltenham type horse after all. However, I can’t have that. Nicholls is one of the best trainers of staying chasers ever and him and Walsh didn’t get to where they are by making bad decisions. If they chose to pass up being on a 4/1 shot in the King George in favour of a longer trip at Cheltenham, then that’s good enough for me. If he were an out and out speed horse then the King George would have been ideal, but I think Paul & Ruby know he’ll be even better over further, meaning he’ll have that lethal Gold Cup combination of class, speed and stamina. They also probably know that Silviniaco Conti is a fair bit better than Tidal Bay, giving them an excellent line through most of the other contenders. With a prep run looking likely in the Denman Chase at Newbury (where I think he’ll easily beat Long Run) the 7/1 NRNB with Totesport is a great bet and I reckon will be a lot shorter come the day.
4pts Silviniaco Conti 7/1 NRNB
2pts Flemenstar 9/1 NRNB
2pts e/w First Lieutenant 12/1 NRNB
All with Totesport.
There haven’t been any significant races since writing this so view remains unchanged. We have however, heard the news today that Bob’s Worth misses the Argento due to a dirty trach wash on Monday.
As I alluded to in original piece, I think the main negative with this horse is his fragility and the difficulty his trainer had in getting him 100% for Cheltenham last year. He clearly needed that run at Ascot to get him spot on for the big race, and I think it’s a big negative that they won’t be having a similar sharpener this time around.
Of course he won the Hennessy fresh, but being fresh at the start of the season is a different ball game to missing an intended engagement, having to wind the horse down and build him up again to Cheltenham, off a huge lay off.
Henderson has been quoted as saying this ‘definitely’ won’t effect his chances in the Gold Cup. In contrast to that, he’s already 4/1 from 7/2 and I expect his SP on the day to be around 9/2-5/1.
The Argento as it stands now is unlikely to offer any realistic clues for the Gold Cup, unless of course Grands Crus suddenly proves he does want 3m+ in testing ground after all.
