…..Mark Howard starts his series of horses to follow in SL;
A SIGHT TO SEA (IRE) 5 b g Affinisea (IRE) – Pauls First (IRE)
Trainer: Dan SKELTON
The all conquering Skelton team have made some intriguing entries at Uttoxter on Friday with Grade 1-winning novice hurdler Bossman Jack a possible runner in the Kalahari King Beginners Chase and Festival bumper runner-up Mets Ta Ceinture could make her jumping bow in the mares’ maiden hurdle. The fixture commences with a two and a half miles novices’ hurdle and former winning pointer
A Sight To Sea is expected to make his belated Rules debut having been acquired for £190,000 at the Goffs UK Coral Gold Cup Sale in November last year. Six days earlier, he ran out a cosy winner of his sole point-to-point at Lingstown (Yielding/Soft) leading at the fourth fence before extending away after the last.
Previously handled by Paul Pierce, the form has been boosted subsequently with the second and fourth both scoring under Rules. Withdrawn from an engagement in a bumper at Wetherby in late March, Dan Skelton has given him plenty of time and the gelded son of Affinisea reportedly shows plenty at home. A big strong rangy individual, it will be disappointing if he doesn’t go close at the Midlands track before establishing himself as a Graded performer over timber.
He could be ideal for something like the Grade 2 Winter Novices’ Hurdle at Sandown (December 4), an event the champion trainer won with Deafening Silence three years ago.
CEASAR’S BALL (FR) 4 b g Great Pretender (IRE) – Carolette (FR)
Trainer: Willie MULLINS
Based at Cashel, Co.Tipperary, Sam Curling was crowned champion point-to-point trainer in Ireland for the first time last season. The two times Cheltenham Festival winning handler, who was responsible for Grade 1 winners Marine Nationale, Summerville Boy and Vanillier, sent out 49 winners and, in doing so, ending Colin Bowe’s eleven year stranglehold on the title. One of those victories was provided by
Ceasar’s Ball, who scored narrowly on his debut in a four-year-old maiden at Ballyknock (Soft) at the beginning of April.
Subsequently bought on behalf of Rich and Susannah Ricci, he looks a strong stayer and could develop into a prime candidate for the Cheltenham Festival bumper in March. The Great Pretender gelding showed a good attitude reeling in the Denis Murphy trained Stromy Wind (sold for £235,000 and joined Robcour / Gordon Elliott) close home prevailing by a neck with six lengths back to the third. Purchased privately, he has pleased Willie Mullins since arriving at Closutton and his Rules debut is one to look forward to. Ireland’s champion trainer has won the Festival bumper on fourteen occasions, including with the Ricci’s Champagne Fever in 2012.
COUNTY PROSPECT (IRE) 4 b g Chanducoq (FR) – Oya Line (FR)
Trainer: Jamie SNOWDEN
Ballycrystal Boy looked an above-average performer when capturing the bumper at Cheltenham on Saturday. The Crystal Ocean gelding learned his trade in Ireland under the tutelage of Brian Lawless winning a point-to-point during the spring before being snapped up for £160,000. Stablemate
County Prospect has an almost identical profile having also won his sole outing ‘between the flags’ for the same handler in February. Making his first public appearance over two and a half miles at Punchestown (Soft/Heavy), he jumped superbly and had his rivals in trouble before the hometurn. Pulling clear to register a twelve lengths victory, his performance oozed class and the four-year-old looked every inch a Graded horse in the making.
While the form has taken a few knocks – the runner-up filled the same position in a bumper at Carlisle last week – the son of Chanducoq was in a different league to his five opponents. Nicky Henderson’s former assistant has suggested that he will contest bumpers this campaign before embarking on a novice hurdle career in twelve months time.
Alongside other high-profile stallions Cokoriko, Ivanhowe, Joshua Tree, Karaktar and Tunis, Chanducoq stands at Haras De Cercy in France. The son of Voix Du Nord is responsible for exciting youngsters Apolon De Chamie (Triumph Hurdle winner), He’s On Fire (Grade 2 winning novice hurdler) and Tutti Quanti (William Hill Hurdle winner). County Prospect could be adding his name to that growing list shortly.
DOWN JONES ROAD (IRE) 4 b g Crystal Ocean – Stephanie Frances (IRE)
Trainer: Nicky HENDERSON
Seven Barrows has recruited some of the most exciting talent on offer from France and Ireland during the last six months and the unbeaten Crystal Ocean gelding
Down Jones Road could be Nicky Henderson’s latest superstar. Already well supported for the Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle – an event the former champion trainer has won six times – he created a lasting impression when winning a four-year-old point-to-point at Tattersalls Farm (Yielding/Soft) in April.
His handler Colin Bowe endured a lean winter with only 19 winners, losing his stranglehold on the championship in the process, but he has been responsible for subsequent Grade 1 winners Envoi Allen, Gerri Colombe and Samcro amongst others.
Out of an eight times winning mare who was rated 138 over hurdles and fences for Dan Skelton, he raced handily before taking charge at the third last. Stretching away in the homestraight, his jockey Barry O’Neill waxed lyrical afterwards describing him as ‘a very special horse.’ Former jockey turned bloodstock agent Jerry McGrath bought him on behalf of Joe & Marie Donnelly, who won the Festival opener with Shishkin in 2020.
There is every possibility the four-year-old will make his Rules debut in the two mile maiden hurdle at Newbury’s Coral Gold Cup fixture (November 27) – his stable have won the event seven times in the last eleven years, including with subsequent Graded winners Buveur D’Air (2015), Jonbon (2021), Jeriko Du Reponet (2023) and Act of Innocence (2025).
