The going remains soft on the Old course at Cheltenham despite another 7mm of rain at the track on Friday night.

The Cheltenham Festival begins on Tuesday week, with the Old course used on the first two days. The action then moves to the New course, which is good to soft, soft in places. The cross-country course, in use on the second day, is soft, good to soft in places.

Always believe the XCC is a good guage as usually that is the better ground. If that is predominantly Soft then the other two courses must be softer.

It can't be watered either.

Another dry day yesterday with sunshine most of the day. This morning also has clear skies with no rain forecast and highs of 16 degrees. The Clerk of the Course said yesterday that they "may" have to water the New Course over the weekend. As of yesterday the Old course was soft virtually all over whereas the New course was good to soft virtually all over. The XC course (which cant be watered) was about 50/50 good to soft and soft. Given the forecast (a little rain tomorrow but not much else) I would expect the Old course to dry out to good to soft for opening day.

For reference the last going stick readings were on Tuesday and were 5.4 for the Old course and 5.9 for the New with 5.2 on the XC course. At the last two meetings the going stick reading was 4.4 on Trials day (soft ground) with 4.8 on XC (soft, g/s in places) and 6.3 on New Years Day which was officially good ground.
