Ballymore Novice Hurdle 2019

The bookies are the one's setting these opening ante post prices and they're going to be cautious after what happened with Samcro. Also, every year it seems the opening prices get less generous. But as a punter if 16/1 is the biggest available and you know he's going to shorten, what else can you do?

For me, as I had said previously, I played him on the exchanges with a view to laying him off. He was slightly bigger on the exchanges prior to this entry.

I fully expect him to win easily tomorrow, and likely won't learn much about him unfortunately.

Yeah tomorrow should be a procession for him given the odds and I agree nothing will be learned but the inevitable shortening of his price.

Not sure what to make of Pyms run today. He jumped well throughout and I can't make any excuses really. Coolanly ran in good company last season and probably more than anything made his experience count? He ran second behind Vinndication, contested both the Ballymore and Aintree festival in the Spring and fav for the Persian War so it wasn't a big shock by any means but where next for Pym? Just bumped into a couple of good horses and deserves another go at the middle distance?

I think he's at the right trip now but I have to say he's probably not good enough for the top table. He could end up in a handicap but if he runs in anything else at the Festival he may be looking for a place at the very best.

If he goes to chelt he'll be likely in the martin pipe. Without sugar coating it, In all honesty he's no chance in a grade 1 novice at chelt. He dosent look particularly likely to be ahead of his mark at 138 on what he's shown. But for anyone who's got him any race that's what you'd be hoping.

Good shout. I saw Ed Quigley on twitter namecheck the same race for him earlier on today as well. Even then though you'd assume they'll be others in the MP who are much more progressive

Felt slightly underwhelmed with CoF there, did the job I suppose

CoF pretty impressive although only beat trees obviously.

I like him. Glad to be on early.

He was absolutely fine - But you can see why gigginstown struggle to produce champions at 2 miles , they all look like chasers

You can look at that 2 ways he was very green. I'm not a fan of his jumping technique he's too slow and measured Imo jumps it like a fence. It was a good debut and hes open to improvement. He's not for me at 16/1 I can see him being beat. You could see a limit to his talent there. And there's no hiding place in Ireland pre chelt.
He's not a 2 miler and He's deffinately no samcro

Not a great deal learned there. Davy got him to jump a few nice and quick but I agree he was ponderous at some others. I can’t see them going back in distance and I still believe Fame And Glory progeny will need this trip at least to be fully effective.

Little underwhelming, but first start over hurdles and a win, can't exactly moan about it too much.

Better opposition and expected improvement will show how good he really is.

Interesting from davy but dosent sound like he's the top of the pecking order to me.

“That was great and a lovely start,” said Russell.

“He's childish in his ways and these are only just steps along the way.

“Where he'll end up, God only knows, but he's a nice horse today anyway.

“It was ideal as we went a reasonable gallop and he picked up well off it.

Regarding trip he added:- “He's versatile I'd say. Obviously connections have other horses to be thinking of too. It's great to have the choice with him.”

How on earth did you get “doesn’t sound like he’s top of the pecking order” from that quote?

I know you don’t rate the horse or performance but I think you’re trying to find something negative.

Quite possibly i read too much into it but In my honest assessment

.
Last year samcro had a set target and everything was slotting in around him.
I took that as they have another horse lined up, and they'll see where he slots in.

Might be wrong, but although he was the hype horse, wasn't Samcro a possible for all 3 races until later in the season?

That generally seems to be the case with most horses, as trainers like to leave options open. I'm sure Elliott said speed for 2, but could stay 3 miles etc.
