Supreme Novices 2018

So were Champagne Fever and Al Ferof.

Yet they managed to beat a Champion Hurdler, a 3 time Champion Hurdler runner up and a 2 time Champion Chaser.

Yeah, I think it has been said time and time again that a staying horse in the Supreme is no bad thing!

It’s a real long shot at this stage, but I have a “hanging by a thread” 33/1 ticket on SPEAK EASY for this. He runs today in the Naas Grade 2 over 2m. He was excellent on debut over this trip, but then disappointed behind Next Destintion and Cracking Smart over 2 and a half.

There’s two things that made me back him: 1) he’s by Beneficial and I’m convinced will love spring ground. 2) 2m trip. He travelled really well and hurdles really well last time out, but didn’t get home and made a bad mistake at the last when tired. I don’t think the ground suited him at all and the first 4 home that day all have 3m as an option, so it was a race for stamina laden horses.

He has to bounce back today over the minimum trip, but if he can, he might get a ticket to the Supreme.

I backed him last time and he does have a nice pedigree. That was Barry's first go and to my eyes it was a shocking performance. He just gave up very easily and I can't have that just being the distance. He has been well supported so far today and perhaps Barry might have restored some confidence with yesterday's win so let's see if he can do anything. Foolishly or otherwise I have given him another chance.

Iv backed him at 7/1 ew as per the other thread.

Was beaten last time when stepped up in grade by some very good horses. He has plenty of ability and he faces nothing of the stature here. His maiden has worked out well, he'll have learned plenty from that, and I'm expecting him to put that to good use and go very close here. the price is very generous imo. And i have full confidence in his claims here.

No entries for Cheltenham though.

Has Geraghty just gave that horse a shocker there or am i blind??

You are not blind. Fortunately, for him the Stewards probably are.

Tucked the horse back in behind the field when he had clear daylight in front to try and get on terms. Only started to give it a ride when it had no chance of winning. Has clearly finished with plenty in the tank. He wasn't outpaced as they may claim. It was just a shocking ride from someone who is an increasing liability. He was lucky to get away with bungling the last in the previous race.

Got a bee in my bonnet bout Geraghty at minute and he should be asked by the stewards about the ride for sure, and his use of the whip on Fitzhenry, which was like a f##king golf swing

Re watched it and that is one of the worst rides ive ever seen from a supposebly top class jock. He was kept well off the pace and should have been allowed to get right up behind the leaders coming down the back straight and then when he was on the outside in the home straight it was just the case of getting after the horse and he then tucks him behind the horses infront again! Absolute madness.. finishes with speed also. If he was given a proper ride Id be almost certain he would have been battling with the first 2 home there.

You would have thought McCoys successor would at least be able to ride out a finish for a full home straight.

From Elliott today on Mengli Khan:

Mengli Khan needs to turn the tables on another Mullins inmate, Getabird, in the curtain-raising Supreme Novices' Hurdle and Elliott is more hopeful than confident.

He said: "On form I can't see how he can beat Getabird. I was stood at the last in Punchestown the last day and he impressed me the way he went by me to the line.

"A few very shrewd judges tell me he is a lot better going right-handed, so that is the only thing that I'm hoping might help me.

"There'll be three or four of them swinging off the last turn in the Supreme and if my lad gets a clear run he'll be one of them.

"If he's good from there, we'll see."

I am glad you said supposedly. The evidence suggests he isn't. How much that is natural decline and how much the retainer is anyone's guess.

The retainer? You think BJG is getting comfortable in his role?

I didn't see the ride but no mention of it on my Twitter timeline. If it was as bad as you suggest I would expect Twitter to be in meltdown.

I am sure he is very comfortable, at least in a financial sense. The point was that having to restrain horse after horse might actually be making him look worse than his basic ability. Once McCoy signed his life away he could never see a stride either.

Sorry, I suspect like many old timers I couldn't give a monkeys what they are or aren't saying on Twitter. Always best to make up your own mind.

Personally, I don't like to see people criticising jockeys but each to their own.

Yep - always thought the JP retainer was about making sure the horse finished where it was meant to on that day.....

Those quotes didn’t look more than confident to me??

If anything he is making Getabird sound even better...

Sounded confident of place claims ... :highly_amused:

Barry gave Master Dee a good ride on Saturday? Big race, got the job done... am I worried about the Champion Hurdle? Nope.

He'll get the job done. He is a top jockey, I don't understand all the negativity. I feel it is because he's now the "the" high profile job, so people are out to get him

I'm desperately trying to get the fav beat, but I just cant see anything... Have backed Kalashnikov, but with no confidence. I am hoping the ground brings the field together, but it seems to me that Getabird, Buveur D'air and Apples Jade in the best way of making money on Tuesday.

Slate House 50/1. Easy :p

Posted a few pages back but on a loose formline, if I backed Kalashnikov I'd definitely want Slate House at 50/1 (or 40s NNRB) because he beat Summerville Boy (who beat him)....

Not a strict formline and I back more than one... but I don't need LOADS of reasons to like a horse at 50/1 and I think that under estimates him. Better than 5/4 the fav anyway

I’ve gone in with Skate House

Remember being at Cheltenham on both his wins, although the races were questionable with hurdles being dolled off, this horse came in with some respect being on the yard were really keen on

He has Cheltenham form.
At ascot he was giving weight whilst Tizzard yard wasn’t flying (22 dec)
Was stepped up in trip, another tizzard mistake with getting trips right. Yard in fire form - 4 winners from 50 (8%)

Yard pretty much back on form. Feels similar to last April where everything was winning

I certainly feel that 40/1 - 50/1 is a generous price. If you’re willing to forgive his last two runs, based on the above, then it makes him a big price. He’ll definitely be going into my e/w acca on the day

I was at chelt on his first win , I thought he looked slow , unless it was the ground . Backed him at 25's around then , don't feel it's
worth going in again.
