2017 Cheltenham Gold Cup

Hopefully it turns out to be a nice puzzle for Colin Tizzard to sort.

Good report that Thistlecrack schooled alongside Native River and he jumped very well.

Much improved. The one to beat for me.

5/2 in a place....:triumphant:

Horses and stories like this, no matter how it ends up now, are the reason I love ante-post betting so much!

Has anyone priced up a Tizzard 1-2-3 yet ?

Tizzard is 6/4 to train the gold cup winner, cue card, thistlecrack and native river possibly all gunning for it

Thistlecrack will probably be 6/4 on the day at this rate :very_drunk:

He probably will, as long as he stays fit to be honest the 7/2 about at the moment looks good, if long run went off a 7/4 fav for the gold cup I certainly think thistlecrack can, still waiting for the opposition to come out and do something, sorry but I can't have cue card as his main competitor come march

If there was a trend/stat thats due to go i think it will be the age stat in the Gold Cup, better vets and training facilities will encourage horses to stay in training longer and should be better and fitter towards the end of their career. If Cue Card runs to an RPR of 180 like he has 4 times in his career and Don Cossack doenst run, i cant see anything stopping him. My big worry is that he had a hard race at Haydock, the result of the race and margin suggests that he didnt but quite why Brennan hit the poor lad at least 4 times once the race was clearly won might come back to haunt them. I thought it was pretty braindead thing to do by Brennan and a very poor advert for our sport. There you had a horse who has given his all in his career and indeed the race, never been un-genuine, he had clearly won the race already and proved his ability in the past to stay the trip and Brennan a very experienced jockey administering whacks like he was riding out a tight finish in the Nunthorpe, it wasnt very pretty to watch and i thought he should of been pulled up on it. Hope Cue Card gets to the GC fit coz Id love to see him win this and ive bet accordingly.

Don Cossack due to return on Feb by all accounts, personally I hope coneygree will come on leaps and bounds for his come back, I also see Dajakadam coming back better this year, forget how young that horse was in his first gold cup 2 years ago, just coming into what should be his prime now

I think that's not a bad little bet in theory considering all it is is a reverse trifecta.. All 3 are fit and well, 2 young up and coming unexposed horses and one unbelievable talent in cue card..

I assume the answer is no but is it possible to place an exacta / trifecta antepost bet with any firm?

I've never known it to be offered Jono

I am a bit worried that 'price' is going to derail me (us) from picking the likely winner in this race.

I don't know how others feel, but the Thistlecrack price is going to be an on-going issue until the off and I think it could take away from the discussion regarding this race (obviously I appreciate that betting is important and that does make a difference) however, putting that to one side.... lets have a chat about who we think would win the Gold Cup... if the following happens...

1. Thistlecrack wins the Kauto Star in a similar fashion to his most recent run
2. Cue Card defends the King George (No Coneygree or Douvan)
3. Coneygree wins the Lexus
4. Djakadam wins the Betbright thing...
5. Don Cossack makes a sound and winning return in Feb
6. All the outsiders turn up...

Without price involved, I'd love to know what people think about the best race of the year... (you'll have to just 'go along' with my hypothetical points to play....)

Great post Kevloaf... I love a hypothetical discussion!
I think that we can (almost) safely rule out Don Cossack. IF the scenario above were to happen, you would have a number of solid players with a good prep behind them and one prep run wouldn't be enough.
Again, in the above scenario, I can't see any of the others competing with IN-FORM Cue Card, Thistlecrack, Coneygree and Djakadam. (Unless Douvan is re-routed, but I think that this is unlikely)
I'm not a fan of Djakadam (can't justify why!) - I just think that he could win a sub-par Gold Cup (2014 esque) BUT in the above case - this would be anything but.
If we ignore GC Trends, then my hunch would be Cue Card. He would have had an uninterupted 2 seasons, he is proven at this level, has solid form in the book and whilst Coneygree will be closerthan when they last met - I would still side with Cue Card (as a safer option).
The unknown is Thistlecrack, but if the 2017 Gold Cup were to be his first decent test in open company - I would side with Cue Card
