Dermot Weld says neither Vigil nor Silver Concorde are certain starters in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival.
The Co Kildare trainer has entered both horses in the race, but told the Irish Times he has had a few "hold-ups" with Vigil since his easy Leopardstown success earlier this month.

Silver Concorde also impressed in a Leopardstown bumper over Christmas, but the ground at Cheltenham could dictate whether he makes the final line-up.

Weld said: "We could run either, or both, or not have a runner at all.

"Vigil has had a few little problems since he won, a few training hold-ups, and we might keep him and go to Punchestown.

"Ground is important for Silver Concorde. He definitely wants decent going. It wasn't that bad at all at Leopardstown when he won,"

"But we will know more closer to the time."
 
The entries are released on Wednesday for the Weatherbys Champion Bumper and most focus will inevitably be on Willie Mullins who will be bidding to win the race for a staggering ninth time. At present it looks like he will be sending over at least a four-pronged challenge with Black Hercules, Shaneshill, Killultagh Vic and Westhorpe said to be already on the boat. Half of Mullins' eight Champion Bumper winners were achieved when he brought over just one contender. Of those eight winners, probably more significantly, six had won their only bumper start as the only other winner in the history of the race to manage that feat was Cue Card. On three of the four occasions when Mullins won having brought over multiple runners, it was his third and second strings according to the market that prevailed. In fact, Briar Hill was the outsider of his three contenders by some margin last year when striking handsomely at 25/1.
 
Steve Gollings has secured the services of Jason Maguire for Definitly Red in the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at Cheltenham.

The Irish-bred five-year-old goes for the big one on the strength of winning both his starts at Newbury and Uttoxeter since joining the Lincolnshire handler from Ireland, where he claimed the last of his three point-to-points.

"He's a good horse and Jason Maguire has committed to riding him in the Champion Bumper, which is great," said Gollings.

"Daryl Jacob rode him first time out at Uttoxeter and told us he was a proper horse. He wasn't available when we declared to run at Newbury, so Jason rode him and he was just as ebullient about him as Daryl was.

"Considering horses by Definite Article usually prefer better ground, he could be even more effective on that sort of surface, which is encouraging."
 
We look like we will have four runners in the Champion Bumper with Shaneshill, Black Hercules, Westhorpe and Killultagh Vic making the trip. Shaneshill and Black Hercules were always earmarked for the race while the latter paid booked their places with impressive wins the weekend before last. It's far too early yet to say who will be riding what in that race.
 
I have backed Black Herculeus and Golantilla ante post for this one but I'd love to see Weld finally get back into the winner's enclosure with either Vigil or Silver Concorde. Hopefully they both line up and give him a run for his money. Probably be Smullen on one and Robbie Mac on the other if they both lined up??

im all over golantilla for this, tony martin wily old fox and owner very bullish, i see Mullins has withdrawn westhorpe which im miffed about as i had backed him as well.

Told he was only half cocked for Naas and they are very hopeful. Hard to see him out of frame imo.

he seemed that way mayo, was tanking 2 out and just found nothing obviously loads to work on with him and hes a big price still.
