Just had a look at Marie's Rock's career profile compared to Epatante - the gold standard they all have to match - and Saint Roi who I've been in two minds over whether to back.
The bottom line is that what Marie's Rock has achieved so far puts her ahead of Saint Roi and Epatante on the basis of their level of performance in the early part of their racing careers.
The one massive difference is obviously that Epitante and SR have gone on to become Festival winners - Epatante in the big one - and only time will tell if Marie's Rock will match their progress.
But from what we know so far it's perfectly possible Marie's Rock could scale those heights.
Epatante and Saint Roi both had an RPR of 135 after 3 runs over hurdles. Marie’s Rock is on 136 after 2 starts over timber.
Epatante’s career took off with victory in an intermediate listed hurdle on her seasonal debut at Newbury last November (rpr150) and she followed up in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton (rpr157).
It wouldn't surprise me if Nicky chose the same two races for Marie's Rock next season as her path to Cheltenham. And so far no-one could claim Epatante's early career trajectory in any way eclipses Marie's Rock.
To my mind these three horses are the most interesting betting propositions in the CH at present.
It's hard to find fault with Epatante but I'm not interested in taking 4-1 this far out.
Saint Roi looked very good winning the County but he was getting plenty of weight from Aramon and Embittered. I also have this nagging feeling that County Hurdle winners sometimes flatter to deceive when upped in grade. I could see him being placed in a CH but I'd be surprised if he won. And 25-1 is not quite tempting enough for me at this stage.
When it comes to Marie's Rock there are 4 negatives in my book: the injury which forced her to miss the Festival, the reliability of the Taunton form (they didn't jump several hurdles because of the low sun), will she act round Cheltenham and will they aim her at the CH.
But I think Henderson will target the CH if he thinks she's good enough and Nico will certainly be hoping that's the case because he'll get the ride.
The positives are that she has been very impressive so far in races run in pretty decent times and showing the sort of finishing speed a CH winner needs (albeit in a far lower grade). I also love her racing style - held up just off the pace - which suits Nico and the way a CH is usually run.
She is only 5 now so there's every chance she could find the necessary improvement to give Epatante a run for her money (Yes, so could Saint Roi who's the same age). But I reckon MR"s price provides decent value in a race where there is very little value right now.
I'm on board with 1pt each way at 50-1 for the CH.
