  • Douvan take his chance in the Ryanair???????? Only went a little more than a mile when coming down

Will they think about it now that Ruby wont have an influence

    Comment

    • Never seen a horse travel as strongly as Douvan was prior to him coming down. Obviously can't say what would have happened, but was getting goosebumps watching him bowl along up front

      • Certainly left in the Ryanair at the mo, AJ still in the stayers too

IMO it would be reckless to run a horse just back from injury so soon after a fall.

Agreed, I posted on the Ryanair thread earlier saying I don't think they will, but they're a law unto themselves these guys

With jockey bookings for sure. Patrick wasn’t even best of Mullins boys left in weigh room.

              • Apparently confirmed Douvan won't run in the Ryanair

                • I know this sounds ridiculous given he is unbeaten, but I think Altior needs a step up.

At Cheltenham atleast he seems to take a little while to get going, now obviously nobody has been able to take advantage but I am devastated Douvan fell. Money aside he was looking breathtakingly good to me.

                  • Steps up and potentially win a gold cup
                    Or
Win the next 2-3 Champion Chases

                    I’d take the latter thanks

He is a bit mo farah like. It’s the finishing kick that wins races. would it still be there after 3 miles ?

As Nicky Henderson said after the race what would be the point when you can win Champion Chases

                        • Just my opinion that he could get beat because of it. It would take some balls by the opposing jockey to hold on as long as possible and make it a real sprint where you catch Altior out with better acceleration but I do think he is there to be got at more than Sprinter was for example.

One example would be the Melling Chase, Hendo did it with SS, a flatter track as well I think it would be a great race for Altior to take on.

Mentioned in the Day 2 thread, I actually spoke with Rich Ricci for about 15 minutes at a bar last night(actually a great guy) and asked him about Douvan and Aintree and if he’d consider the Melling Chase, he did say if he went that would be the plan. So who knows maybe this great clash could go all the way!

Good luck with finding a horse who finds more from the last than Altior. He only looks more vulnerable than Sprinter Sacre because that horse did most of his running on the bridle. If they were reasonably close at the last there would only be one winner. Altior had the pace to run away with a Supreme, Sprinter Sacre didn't.

Perhaps if you have an eight length advantage running to the last you might have a chance.

There is no need to step him up in trip. If you are the best at what you do why experiment?

                            • He is the best after the last, but he is needing to be ridden before the bend

I don’t think he will be stepped up but I’d like to see it at Aintree.

Maybe the word need was the wrong word, but I think he’d be more devastating over 2.5, and I think if there was a rematch again next year Douvan would have him off the bridle even earlier and beat him.

My point about holding on though is that if you slowed the pace to try and keep Altior on the bridle you might be able to outpace him. He seems like a hicham el guerrouj type where he winds it up before hitting top speed rather than a Almighty kick and away

                              • Just watched this race back.

Altior and Min land at the last together. Altior finishes 7L clear.

In the Supreme, Altior has a 1L lead approaching the final hurdle and takes it better, and wins by 7L.

Altior has IMPROVED as a chaser more than Min has for me. Anything Min does, just franks the form of Altior.

The ground was not right for Altior and I think we'll see a massive figure from him if he gets his conditions.

He's 7/4 for next season and Footpad wouldn't beat him and it seems highly likely they'll step him up in trip based on Ruby and Willie's comments... Douvan and Min are available at 14/1 with PP but Altior won't ever see the back of Min, and for all that Douvan was travelling well, he's fallen too far out to be confident.

He also is fragile so not much of a betting proposition. Neither is Altior at 7/4 at this stage but what an absolute monster of a horse.

I think Sprinter Sacre is the best horse I've seen but if you look at the overall profile of both horses Altior doesn't need to be in his shadow at all. Certainly a comparable horse now... and I genuinly don't see any challengers from the Arkle or this years CC stepping forward to put it up to him after the last.
