Symonds on Kaki weather watch ahead of Wetherby's totepool Towton Novices' Chase

Kings Palace headlines 15 entries for the £30,500 Totepool Towton Novices' Chase (3.20pm), the highlight of a seven-race card at Wetherby on Totepool Medieval Day, Saturday, January 31.

The David Pipe-trained seven-year-old is unbeaten in two starts over fences this season and is disputing favouritism with Don Poli for the Grade One RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.

Tom Symonds is hoping for rain for his entry Kaki De La Pree, who was last seen out when second to another Pipe-trained horse, Gevrey Chambertin, in a three-mile novices' handicap chase at Newbury on December 17.

The eight-year-old, who was second in a Grade Two novices hurdle at Haydock last season, was third to Return Spring (Philip Hobbs) on his chasing debut at Exeter in November.

Symonds said: "We have entered Kaki De La Pree but we would want to see some rain.

"The softer the ground the better for him. We have entered because he was declared for a race at Bangor which was off and he was also declared at Chepstow, which was also off.

"He has been really good since Newbury and we were probably unlucky to bump into an in-form Gevrey Chambertin. Kaki De La Pree is a good horse and a stamina-sapping test is what he needs.

"He needed it at Exeter and we were never going to do anything quickly with him because he is not the easiest. He is quite fragile, so you can't ever do too much work with him at home and we like to leave plenty to work on. He is ready to rock and roll now."

Top Totti (Henry Daly) and Ned Stark (Alan King), who finished third and fourth respectively in the Grade Two Dipper Novices' Chase at Cheltenham on New Year's Day, are other notable entries for the Wetherby race which takes place over three miles and a furlong.

First run in 1996 and sponsored by totepool since 2006, the Towton Novices' Chase commemorates the Battle of Towton in 1461 which was a major conflict in the Wars of the Roses.

The inaugural winner Mr Mulligan progressed to take the Cheltenham Gold Cup just over a year later, while another notable winner was Wetherby specialist Ollie Magern in 2005, who went on to land the Grade Two Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby twice (2005 and 2007).

Neil Mulholland insists he will run The Young Master in the race he feels will give his exciting prospect the best chance of success at the Cheltenham Festival as he plots his assault on the four-day extravaganza.
While the Wiltshire trainer admits he would probably prefer the Toby Balding National Hunt Chase on the opening day (10 March), he revealed the owner might like to go for the RSA Chase on the following day.
"People seem to think it's the RSA. I see it was mentioned it was plan A. It is by no means plan A," Mulholland told Racing UK.
"He will only have two entries. We will keep it to the two novice races, the RSA and the four-miler.
"The owner would probably like the RSA and I would probably like the four-miler. It's something that needs to be discussed.
"There's a lot of bridges to cross between now and then.
"He's already won over three-mile-two around Cheltenham and he was staying on up the hill and he has improved a lot since then.
"You'd be fairly confident he'd stay the four miles. He's acted on heavy ground and he's acted on a better surface.
"We've not got him entered in three or four races. It's just down to these two. I've got to speak to the owner.
"I think the horse has got even stronger since Ascot, he's in great order, so it just depends on the day. We just want to do the best for the horse and give him the best chance of winning."

I seriously think Valseur Lido will go for the RSA. Cant see them wanting to take Vautour on in the JLT and ruby described him yesterday as a stayer. 14-1 at coral looks a nice price.

They ran Sir Des Champs in JLT so wouldn't rule either ra e out or in. They have a big hand to play in virtually all the chases at the fez.

Cooper doesn't seem too keen on giving the Don Poli ride to Patrick in the 4 miler. So it could be a battle between Cooper and Mullins in Michael and Eddie's ears as to which way they go.

                  Welcome on board OC.

Its hard enough working out what Willie will want to do never mind trying to perm the Gigginstown horses. Cooper seems to have ended up on the wrong one a good few times lately.

Used to love the Giggy horses in this. From our leaders stats ...

Respect the Gigginstown horses - they have finished 4142FF since 2009

but happier to follow Davy now

Davy Russell ridden horses have finished 414213 in the race since 2009, Geraghty is P56131 and Walsh 1FFP44 over that period

stats on the Dr PJ moriarty or flogas as it now is - been a good pointer to the Festival. Arkle and RSA winner finished 1-2 recently enough !

Newmill and Big Zeb ran in this not winning...so can move back to two miles.

                          Ruby

Willie runs three in the Grade 1 novice chase and I’m on the mare, Adriana Des Mottes. She departed at the final fence at Limerick, when destined for second behind Gilgamboa.

She gets plenty of weight, but, given a choice, I’d be with Gigginstown’s Valseur Lido. He jumped and travelled great when winning the Drinmore at Fairyhhouse and is a smart sort.
