2026 Stayers Hurdle

There is also the question of whether The Yellow Clay will actually line up for the race on Friday. Gordy/Bective have also declared Casheldale Lad for the same race and Gordy has plenty of previous for pulling out one of his horses on the morning of the race. Whether he runs or not on Friday shouldn't affect his Festival target though.

I'm hoping he runs as he may well get beat or win in unimpressive fashion over an inadequate trip and they'll then hopefully push his price out again !

It'll be good to see how the TNL form adds up and also last season's Novice Hurdles form v the Juvenile form. Good little race.

Or put him over a fence where he belongs

I don’t have much hope for The Yellow Clay in open company, as a hurdler

Feels trip-less for me. Will get eaten up over 2 and not sure about him as a 3 miler

Firefox vibes, where he will be soon forgotten - it could just be the silks
Same re TNL ??

I’m not a fan of TNL, I really want to….

For me, I’d want to see Harry run him up front and continuously press the pace, using his slick hurdling to keep an advantage

but I can see Harry sitting him back and expecting a steering job, as though he’s riding a 180 rated horse. He will need to ride TNL like Ruby did on Faugheen.

this is the stayers thread, so don’t want to go off topic too much

thought Yellow Clay ran a huge race in March, really impressive… but I can see that being the best we’ll ever see him

Think I’d rather put money on Hewick at this stage (win each-way) for the stayers over TYC, and hope for a dry festival lol

….40-1 with cash-out;

Potters Charm is all set to start his season in Saturday’s bet365 Hurdle at Wetherby.

The six-year-old, trained by Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies, started last season with four straight victories, including the Grade Two Hyde Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham and the G1 Formby Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree on Boxing Day.

The six-year-old met with defeat on his two subsequent starts, most recently when finishing fifth behind The New Lion in the Turners Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

Willy Twiston-Davies said: “We had earmarked this race for Potters Charm a while ago and, provided the ground is on the easy side, he is ready to get started.

“We decided to keep him over hurdles this season because the staying hurdle division does not look the strongest. He was a high-class novice and can always go chasing next season.

when hes beaten final demand round cheltenham id be surprised if they were scared of him.

Think it makes plenty of sense to keep him over hurdles to be honest. Much more sense than it would to send him novice chasing in fact.

Yep, ground and trip a big worry.

There will be more pulled I guess. Need rain !!!!
Tbf its been pissing down here! So im not buying that. Just dont think its his trip and was a questionable entry/discussion from the get go, especially if hes a stayers horse.

Good news re rain for all concerned.

100%, had the look of a very odd entry, perhaps hoping everyone else is scared off and he's left with 2/3 runners and he can use it as a paid schooling session...

As predicted by some - The Yellow Clay a NR today.
Elliott is definitely up to something with this. He only really started doing it last season and seems he’s at it again.

Will be so hard to prove of course but I just couldn’t trust the c**t whatsoever now.

Hewick looks set revert to hurdling for the rest of the season after coming up short in the Charlie Hall Chase on Saturday.

Shark Hanlon’s stable star was the 2-1 favourite for Wetherby’s Grade Two feature after making a successful return to action over the smaller obstacles at Thurles last month, but was beaten 28 lengths into fourth place by the Venetia Williams-trained winner Djelo.

Although Hewick has won a number of high-profile races over fences, including the bet365 Gold Cup, the Galway Plate and the King George VI Chase, Hanlon feels he may now be more comfortable over hurdles, with a possible trip to Newbury next on the agenda and the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival identified as his long-term objective.

“There’s not a bother on him and he ate up when he came home. They just went very hard and he couldn’t make up the ground,” said the Bagenalstown handler.

“I suppose the two-and-a-half-mile horses were the ones that were in front and he’s more of a three-and-a-half-mile horse than a two-and-a-half-mile horse – they just took him off his feet, that’s all.

“We will look to go hurdling for the rest of the year I’d say and he could go to Newbury (for the Coral Long Distance Hurdle) in three weeks’ time.

“Three miles or three-mile-two and the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham will be kind of the route.”

I have a feeling Shark's going to have the last laugh again.

He mentioned the stayers and going hurdling multiple times last week. It’s a weak division, and there’s plenty of opportunities (bar ground, so likley spring) for him to tally up more prize money

66/1 each way, I’m on
Get the boy back on as well. Thought Gavin gave him an awful ride at the weekend. Really disappointed the horse IMO. Shark can't say much though as he ride him the same way in the KG and won!
