Cheltenham Festival Preview Nights 2019

Funny Cheltenham preview quotes

Alastair Down - you have more chance of getting an interview with the loughness monster than Pat Kelly

Danny Mullins 2017
Mc- you have no ride in this years gold cup,if you could pick one ride who would it be ?

Barry ....

Later today I’m heading to the Goat in Dublin for the At The Races Cheltenham Preview Night. I did the same preview with the same bunch of lunatics last year and it was a bit of a shock to the system. I always turn up to these preview nights expecting anything, that way I’m never too surprised, but this was a bit madder than I’d expected! It was great craic though and I’ll know exactly what to expect this time.

They have assembled a great panel again, though instead of a great steadying influence in Sean Boyce is a stick of dynamite in Matt Chapman, so it might be even madder this year! I’m looking forward to hearing the views of attheraces.com’s Tony Keenan who I thought had a very good read of it last year.

You can watch it live at 8pm on either the At The Races Facebook page or on attheraces.com. If you click on this link and then click “Get Reminder”, it will flash up on your screen when it’s just about to start.

It should be a great night and hopefully any of you that tune in will enjoy it.

That Unibet preview was rubbish.

Wasn't great but at least the audience were courteous to the speakers.
betfair one last year was a disgrace, think Ricci wasn't able to turn up so he basically covered the bar bill...

First time post, been reading a while and think this is a great forum full of knowledge and expertise. Not sure if it's been posted but on Gaultstats site are indications of where some of Elliott's horses will be aimed from Elliott himself at last nights preview evening:
Gordon Elliott - Gary went through each race with him but both forgot about Tiger Roll (NAP) 'til the end. 'No horse is a certainty in a 3m 6f Cross Country, but he is.' Close Bros, runs four, Campeador is mad beast but his best chance. Some engine. (Heard this before?) In the 4 miler he runs Gun Digger, wanted to run Champagne Classic but Mr O'Leary said no. He runs in RSA, Gordon says horse has no chance. In the Coral Cup Gordon runs three, Cracking Smart, Farclas and one other, he couldn't remember. Likes Cracking Smart, back from a kissing spine op, has improved since last run.'

Fred Winter, 'Lethal Steps his best, flat rating 108, needs a fast pace to settle, should be cutting through them at the end'. Pertemps, 'Sire De Berlais, this has been the plan for a long time, nice weight. Also likes A Toi Phil, not the biggest, but one of those horses that runs well in G2/G3 without reaching highest level'. Seemed sweet on him. Nothing in Mares Novice good enough. Kim Muir. 'Keen on Measureofmydreams at a lot bigger price than he is now, JJ Codd rides. His jumping sometimes lets him down.' Bon O'Neill will be on Its All Guesswork. His main hope in the County will be Éclair De Beaufeu, 'should he get in'. In the Martin Pipe, runs Dallas Des Pictons, Cartwright, Defi Bleu, and maybe Galvin. And I think Gordon had a good night, well refreshed.

Welcome to the forum Samuel.

In relation to the Coral Cup I hope the 'forgotten' horse is Diamond Cauchois.

Mullingar Preview, same mate that wrote up the Athlone one...
The panel for the night:
Joseph O'Brien
Rachael Blackmore
Noel Meade
Eddie O'Leary
Kevin O'Ryan ( MC )

A lot of talk tonight on the going with the panel feeling that if all the rain comes that is promised there that the ground will be on the soft side, even saying that it could be bordering heavy later in the week.So a lot of mentions of horses that want softish ground. Eddie O'Leary was saying a bit more about his horses than in Athlone probably with this being his home venue. Joseph O'Brien was excellent and had most to say and came out with some witty statements too. Not the guy you see on TV.

SUPREME:
Rachael: The Mullins's think a lot of Klassical Dream and will have a big shout if he turns up here. Rachael actually shares a house with Patrick Mullins so take note.

Joseph: FakirD'Oudaries is his likely runner here. He has lots of experience and the softer the better for him. He is in great shape. Not sure if Al's Dancer is good enough and thinks Angels Breath has an eachway shout if he turns up here but he feels that whatever beats Elixir De Nutz will win.

Eddie: Likes Al's Dancer

Noel: Likes Al's Dancer but if ground comes up soft, then Vision D'honneur each way.

ARKLE:
Joseph:Likes Glen Forsa, saying that he has been impressive and will be hard to beat. He runs Us and Them here which he says has a small each way chance and the softer the better for him.

Noel: Thinks it is between Glen Forsa and Duc Des Genievres.

Eddie: Likes Duc Des Genievres and Glen Forsa and says his Hardline has a small chance.

Rachael: says she probably rides Ornua and has a solid each way chance but wants good ground. She also thinks that Paloma Blue runs here and his jumping has been improving at home.

CHAMPION HURDLE:
Eddie: Says that the in season thing is major for her. If she goes in season , then she has no chance. She needs to be bouncing and on her toes in parade ring before hand and if she is , has a major chance.

Noel: Likes Apples Jade, was not impressed with Laurina the last day and opposes her but likes Sharjah each way on good ground and gives Espoir D'allen a solid each way chance.

Joseph: On good ground likes Verdana Blue each way.

Rachael: Says Apples Jade is the one to beat.

CLOSE BROTHERS NOVICE CHASE:
Eddie: Likes Riders on the storm here

Joseph: Runs Tower Bridge here and says he has an each way chance

Rachael: Rides A Plus Tard here saying he is a lovely ride and an improver and she thinks will go very close here.

ULTIMA:
Joseph: Said that he was on a preview night with Harry Cobden and Harry said that Give me a copper was his best chance at the festival

NATIONAL HUNT CHASE:
Noel: Likes OK Corral and gives Discorama an each way shout.

Eddie: Likes Gun Digger each way saying that Lisa O'Neill rides

BALLYMORE:Eddie: Said that Battleoverdoyen has a touch of class here and the more rain the better for him . Mentions City Island each way

Joseph: Says that Battleoverdoyen has been very impressive and also likes Klassical Dream if he turns up here. He thinks that City Island has to make a big step up to this class.

Noel: Does not like Champ and thinks City Island each way

Rachael: Rides Notebook here. She thinks Klassical Dream will go close if this is his chosen race but says that Battleoverdoyen has been very impressive too.

RSA:
Eddie: Says Delta Work is a better chaser than a hurdler and the softer the ground the better. He says Champagne Classic runs here with an each way shout and again the more rain the better for him. He says Santini is the best of the English.

Noel: Thinks Delta Work is one of the bets of the meeting with Topofthegame the best of the English.

Rachael: Likes Delta Work

Joseph: Has been very impressed with Topofthegame but he won't beat Delta Work. Delta Work one of the bets of the week.

CHAMPION CHASE:
All agree that Altior is past the post but asked for an each way selection without Altior:

Eddie: Un De Sceaux if the rain arrives.

Noel: Whichever of Willie's three runs will be second.

Rachael: I think she says that she rides Ordinary World and that he might run into a place at a big price.

CROSS COUNTRY:
All agree here that Tiger Roll is the one to beat.

FRED WINTER:
Eddie: Gives an each way shout to Coco Beach if ground is soft

Rachael: Likes Star Max saying that he has a lot more ability than he thinks that he has and that his win the last day might give him confidence and says he will keep galloping.

Noel: Likes Band Of Outlaws

Joseph: Likes Band of Outlaws but is a little worried about the trip. Garden of Babylon does not run here, goes to Supreme or Triumh, Konitho does not run either and Star max is improving and has a good each way chance vut would prefer soft ground.

BUMPER:
Joseph: Says that neither of his will run if ground comes up soft. Both want good ground. He says both Blue Sari and Envoi Allen both are better on soft ground.

Rachael: Would ride Blue Sari if she could ride anything in the race.

Eddie: Lisa rides Abracadabra. He cannot have Blue Sari and says 4-y-o have a terrrible record in this and likes Envoi Allen.

Noel: Does not like Blue Sari and says he needs soft, likes Envoi allen. Then he says that he was on a preview night and said that Gordon said that Abracadabra had an each way chance. Keith donoghue was on the same panel and said that if Gordon said that , that the owner of abracadabra must have been sitting beside him, which he was.

JLT:
Eddie: Says that Mengli Khan runs here as does Mortal but he likes Defi Du Seuil. Also says that if Articulum turns up here on soft ground, it has a huge each way chance.

Rachael: Rides Mortal here. she says he neds a quiet ride and has a great each way shout at a big price but likes Defi Du Seuil

Noel: Likes Defi Du Seuil

Joseph: Says that Mortal runs here with an each way shout but he likes Defi Du Seuil as well.

RYANAIR:
Eddie: says that Balko Des Flos runs here and has had trouble with sore shins all year and that an easier surface might be what he needs now. Also runs Sub Lieutenant.

Rachael: Does not know what she rides but reading between the lines, it looks like Monalee will run here in preference to Gold Cup. She says that she rode out Balko Des flos the day before and that he feels fantastic.

Joseph: Says that Monalee is the one to beat and is much better at short of three miles.

Noel: Says that no decision has been made of which race Road To Respect runs in but he is in good shape and seems worried about the last two furlongs of the Gold Cup. He gave the impression that he would run here in preference. He says that Tout Est Permis needs sot ground and would also run here.

STAYERS:
Eddie: Doubtful that Samcro will make the festival . All depends on a workout on Wednesday morning.

Rachael: Rides Petite Mouchir here and says he has a great each way shout.

Joseph: Thinks that the form of the last Paisley Park run is falling apart and he likes Faugheen.

Noel: Says that the vibes are very good for Faugheen. He is not sure that Paisley Park is good enough and likes Supasundae each way.

PERTEMPS:
Eddie: Sire Du Berlais runs here with an each way chance.

Noel: Says Cap York runs here, is improving all the time and the further he goes the better. Says though that he is not well handicapped and likes A Toi Phil each way.

Rachael: Will robably ride Cuneo and says race will suit him.

Joseph: Likes Sire Du Berlais and runs Thermistocles with an each way chance, likes soft.

MARES NOVICE:
Rachael: Very impressed with Honeysuckle and is her best chance of a winner and will go very close and will probably run here with Sinoria probably going for Ballymore or Martin Pipe but no final decision made yet.

BROWN ADVISORY:
Joseph: Says that Daryl Jacob told him that Janika here was his best chance of the week.

KIM MUIR:
Eddie: says that Aarkwhisht wll run here and probably Tom Hamilton riding . He is in good shape. Joseph says that he will win a big race one day but is inclined to belt one fence every time.

TRIUMPH:
Eddie: Says that Sir Eric is one of his naps of the week and they run an outsider here called Authoriso

Rachael: Likes Sir Eric

Noel: Says that this is no contest and that sir Eric could win the Supreme

Joseph: Will be disappointed if Sir Eric gets beat here. His best chance of a winner and loves jumping. He says that of Paul Nicholl's that Pic D'Orhy is better than Quel Destin.

ALBERT BARTLETT:
Eddie: He likes Commander of Fleet but this is a very tough race for a 5-y-o. He likes Derinross on soft ground and gives Dunvegan an each way shout.

Joseph: Likes birchdale and runs Rhinestone here with an each way chance. He also mentions that this race is always won by the most experienced horse and for that reason likes Dinons

Noel: Likes Commander of Fleet and also gives each way shouts to Derinross on soft and Dunvegan. He runs first Approach here and rates him with an each way chance saying that he had a few problems but they are hopeful that they have them sorted out here.

GOLD CUP:
Eddie: Says that the preparation for Presenting Percy has to be a worry , mentions Anibale Fly each way and says on heavy ground, Native river will take the beating but he says that his own mare Shattered Love is bred to stay forever and has a huge each way chance

Rachael: Likes Presenting Percy

Noel: Likes Presenting Percy but says that he is a skinny price.

Joseph: Says there has to be a question mark over the stamina of Clan Des Obeaux and that whatever gets by Native River will win.

REST OF DAY FOUR:
Eddie : in the Martin Pipe, Defi Bleu has a solid each way chance . Conor Brassil rides. Also in the Grand Annual, Minds Eye has a good chance with Rachael riding

Joseph: Mentions Early Doors each way in the Martin Pipe and Galvin whereever he runs .

Rachael: Says Sinoria each way in the Martin Pipe but likes Dallas Des Pictons to win that,

Noel: Likes Dallas Des Pictons in the Martin Pipe and Ucello conti in the Foxhunters. Also mentions Uradel in the Coral cup but Eddie says that he won't get in there

ASKED FOR ONE ENGLISH HORSE FOR FESTIVAL:
Eddie: Defi de Seuil

Joseph: Give me a Copper

EDDIE then gave two each way gigginstown horses, Shattered Love in Gold Cup and Defi Bleu in the Marin Pipe.

NOEL THEN GAVE HIS SIX BEST BETS IN PREFERENCE ORDER
Tiger Roll
Sir Eric
Delta Work
Dallas Des Pictons
Benie Des Dieux
A Toi Phil
Noel also predicted Barry Gerathy for leading rider and Gordon Elliott for leading trainer

CHARITY BETS: ALL EACH WAY AT PRICES AS FOR CHARITY
Eddie: Shattered Love- Gold Cup
Rachael: Petit Mouchir - Stayers hurdle
Joseph: Galvin- Wherever he runs
Noel: A Toi Phil - Pertemps
Kevin: Early Doors - Martin Pipe

Cheers qzy.
Didn't Joseph say Rhinestone had a setback and would miss the festival ?
On another preview evening ?
It was put in the out of the festival thread.

Cheers Qzy, did you get anything for the first 2 days?

Apologies, not sure why it was truncated. Sorted now :)

Gigginstown Bingo

these could all change

Hardline - Arkle Plan A
Gun Digger - I like Quevega's best handicapped theory so maybe to plate ( but 4 miler an option ?)
MK - JLT ( but also has plate and Grand Annual options)
CC - 4 miler still plan A (but could drop in JLT if MK goes to a handicap)
DW - RSA Plan A (only goes down not up in trip imo)
Minds Eye - Close Plan A ?

With NRNB probably worth perming a few of the less obvious combos.

Now looks like

Hardline - Arkle Plan A
Gun Digger - 4 miler ?
Mortal JLT
MK - JLT ( but also has plate and Grand Annual options)
CC - RSA or 4 Miler ( Owner/Trainer debate)
DW - RSA
Minds Eye - Grand Annual?

leaving Monotomic or Roaring Bull in Close

Where does the conclusion that Mortal goes JLT come from? He is their best option for the National Hunt Chase. Not quick enough over shorter trips and dam was a stayer. On that basis going up in trip would seem obvious to anyone.

Did you see his run against Delta Work? Their best runner for the 4 miler is Champagne Classic without a doubt.

Mortal travelled into the race well but I think Delta Work wasn't at his best and even without the mistake would have run away from him. Sometimes a horse can travel and then not find because they are essentially a stayer. In this case the pedigree backs that up. Whichever race he goes for he needs to find improvement and the easiest way to do that would be to step up in trip. He would be around 12/1 for a National Hunt Chase but any price for a JLT. Absolutely no logical reason for running in the JLT. Think O'Brien has grasped that idea but Gigginstown haven't.

Champagne Classic ran very well first time but for me took a step back last time. I would definitely take Mortal over him.
