2026 BetMGM Cup Handicap Hurdle (previously Coral Cup)

Last years race JDS 1.52s quicker over first 4 furlongs than TNL, he was 1.22s quicker over the last 4 furlongs (and a higher FSP%) yet the overall time of the handicap was 0.91s slower than the Turners.

In 2024 when LD won for the 2nd time, the race was 9.44s slower than Ballyburns Turners win. Similar last 4f times (but LD slower than Ballyburn) but much slower before that.

In 2023, LD was again slower overall than IEPs Turners win and slower over the last 4f.

For the Turners, we say a horse can go up from 2m and cope with the extra distance as they don’t go quick early on (2 quick hurdles and then the bend generally sees the pace not be too hard). The BetMGM cup is over the same track and distance and follows the same pattern but in the last 3 years has been slower over the first 2 miles than the Turners. FSP% wise you’re then getting the handicap hurdle at a higher % (even if in 2 of the years they were slower than the novices over the last half mile).

The race therefore suits horses who have shown speed to win over shorter distances and weight seems to have less impact as there tends to be a mid race slowing down.

Of the last 10 winners I think Commander of Fleet is the only one who hasn’t won over the minimum distance but he did run in a grade 1 novice hurdle over 2m.

Add in the usual age profile, winner usually testing themselves in graded races beforehand and it being won by classier hurdlers near the top of the handicap, Storm Heart is the ideal candidate. Others of interest would be Kopeck de Mee (2m2f listed winner in France), Give it to me OJ for a place, Henry’s mare if she turns up and Foercely Proud for a place.

And when CoF won it was a bog cos it rained relentlessly that day. I recall from bitter, bitter personal experience

That was the infamous Tuesday night when minutes after racing they got the hosepipes out, I was watching from lev 5 and looking at a met office forecast that said the course would be getting 15mm of rain overnight with possible localised flooding.
Facile Vega won the bumper that day and I can't ever remember seeing so much standing water on the course...

Can anyone recall if someone from the Mullins camp gave a good mention to Jimmy Du Seuil in last years preview circuit? I can't recall it being mentioned (it may have been) but be interesting to know. Like most people I find it's the horses they don't talk about are the ones to focus on

Had a good look through the 'likely' types for this last night and came to similar conclusion as DenmanSacre has above. And the market has found. Storm Heart looks the right type, which is ideal confirmation bias for me. Kopek another one. Iberico Lord and Katiera have a bit going for them on profiles also imo, but not as much of the other two.

The only one I found at a decent price was Farren Glory. But I'm not sure if he's an intended runner anyway. And he's not that easy to like on form off that mark, or as a handicap plot. Although the Storm Heart formline lto can be read alright, if you're looking for reasons to confirm a trends pick. Anyone know if he's coming over?

Was one of my very few winners that year, not a festival I have fond memories of really, think they made a balls of things from start to finish(Watering, car parks, closing roadsin the local area).
Having watched Jonbon, Gaelic Warrior, Andy Dufresne & American Mike all get stuffed I thought I'd get back in front so had a fair sized lump on Galopin for the opener on the thursday, was all downhill from then on, I left before the last of my main bets for the week ran knowing my fate (3rd in the Martin Pipe), fuck 2022.

I was with my wife and when we go we have a usual tradition of going to Wagamamas after racing. She suggested we give up and head in but I was like no I love the bumper. Let me go to the loo and we'll get a spot.

Went into the loo, jammed like sardines, steam rising off of how wet everyone was. Two lads walk in, one shouts "why is everyone so sad????". His mate produces a big wad of cash and shouts "cos they're lost all their fucking money!!!!!!!".

And someone turned round and chinned him. Huge brawl breaks out.

I scarper back to my missus "On second thoughts, I'd love some noodles"

Yeah, think I'd have done the same to him, and the last time I hit someone in anger it was the 90's.

David Casey gave him as a handicapper to follow in several previews.

DAN SKELTON

KATEIRA

“I feel with the drying forecast that we have going into the meeting that Kateira has a big chance in what is now the BetMGM Cup.

"We have looked at this race for her for a little while and she would hold an each-way chance in the race.”

….Henderson;

JINGKO BLUE

“He will go to what was the Coral Cup. He has been difficult and he didn’t enjoy jumping fences as well as he ought to have done. He had back problems and surgery, but he is still a talented horse.

"He ran a very good race at Cheltenham behind Kabral Du Mathan which was his best run for a while. He should run well in this, back in a handicap.”

I think feet of a dancer been scratched for this

Still in at and mares

…..watched that interview in the Stable Tours thread and he seemed split between Coral Cup and Stayers, but I notice how short she is for Mares.

Worth noting, Nolan has HMS Seahorse in this (66-1 NRNB).

Think off the back of that entry and "others" not going there! I had looked at her double figures last night and decent ew chance in mares "when" lossiemouth goes champion hurdle!
